We are going on a special trip today to Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge in Martin County, Florida. We will be taking a special look at the location where the zones of the Carolinian and Caribbean Molluscan Provinces cross each other, in Southeast Florida.
This area of Florida(and SE Florida in general) is unique because where the two zones overlap, you can find shell species from two different and distinct biodiverse regions, including shells from the Caribbean!

Beautiful walk, beautiful shells. We won't get to the beach any time soon because Rehoboth beach got hit by a storm mother's day weekend, the water is so high there's no beach just water, but you enjoy yourself ☺️♥️

Wow! Those are gorgeous shells! I never knew that beach was there! Have you ever gone to the Katherine Abbey Hanna State Park near Mayport, in Jacksonville? It's pretty there, but I was there last as a teen and I wasn't much of a sheller then. Thanks for the long shots of the ocean. They're beautiful and I like them a lot. This was a great video and I enjoyed it very much!

I liked your thought of how far north does the Gulf Stream affect shelling. I can tell you first hand even as far north as North Carolina, you can get Caribbean species (Helmets, sundials, Flamingo tongues etc.) I think your mystery moon snail might just be a weirdly weathered shark eye. Very nice finds, loved that Caribbean vase especially!

Hello friend! For sure - I believe the Gulf Stream swings back close and comes with 15 - 20 miles of the coast off of Cape Hatteras. It's definitely one of the reasons, so many awesome shells can be found there. I have read articles that divers find beautiful Cones, Conch's and Tritons in deep water off of North Carolina - it's so exciting! Thanks so much for watching!

Very interesting. I have been surprised over the last few years to see videos where Caribbean shells are being found further and further north. Have you noticed this? If so, any reason why? I love your videos.

Hi friend, I have not had the opportunity to shell north of this area yet in Florida. I am aware however, that such shells may consistently be found as far north as the Fort Pierce area due to the impacts of the Gulf Stream. As you head north of the Fort Pierce area, the impacts of the Gulf Stream diminish precipitously. Hope this provided a little bit of helpful info toward your question! Thanks for watching!

Hello friend, I am only able to shell in Florida 1 - 2 times a year, timing my trip around visits to family. When I'm in Florida, I try to shell with every free moment I have. With that said, I have only shelled SE Florida in winter and early spring - I ALWAYS have a great experience and find tons of shells. I will also say though, that I hike long distances on the beach to find goodies, haha! Best of luck shelling!

I’m definitely going to go check that beach out. Is it an official rule that you can’t take any shells from the beach? If so, maybe I won’t go.🤣🤗🐚🐚🐚🐚

Yes! it's very beautiful. The federal website doesn't explicitly state no shell collecting. I called the ranger station before this trip, and they told me to not remove anything from the beach - that's the guidance I went by. Thanks for watching!

I appreciate the cinematic aspect of your videos. Thanks for taking us along. Are you sure you can’t take empty seashells? They are not wildlife or plants. I’ve been to other WLRs where they let you take empty shells.

Hello! I am not entirely sure to be honest, that shells cannot be taken from Hobe Sound - the refuge website doesn't not explicitly state this. Before my trip and filming there, I called the ranger station to ask this question, and they told me that shells cannot be removed from the beach here. This is the guidance I went off of. Thank you so much for watching, and for commenting on the cinematic aspect... it means a lot!

Yes lol - This was actually filmed toward the end of last year. I was on a cruise in the Caribbean the week previous to filming this episode. I fell while out on a day trip with my friends from the cruise and hit my hand pretty hard - it was healing! The park website doesn't explicitly state that empty shells cannot be collected(at least from what I could find there), but I had called the ranger station prior to filming this episode and asked if I could collect shells - they said please don't remove any shells from the beach. Thanks so much for watching!
