In this video, we test out Intel's new Iris Xe iGPU “integrated Graphics” and overall I’m impressed by what intel has done here when you compare it to older Intel UHD graphics. The chip we test in the video is the Tiger Lake i7 1165G7 which actually has iris Xe with 96 EU’s and is backed by 16GB of DDR4 @ 3200Mhz. We test out CS GO, Doom Eternal, GTA5, Forza Horizon 4, Rocket League, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Cyberpunk 2077, and more.

Given the current circumstances with GPU prices, Intel and AMD would do well to focus a little harder on iGPU's so that gamers can at least play some modern games, even if it's only on lower settings.

Nice that you even tested Cyberpunk! =) You could say something about the price when you name the specs - In this case about 860 $. I think the price is always important to get the proper perspective for the price/ performance value. Otherwise good job as always!

I think this chip will do well in the GPD Win 3 with a 720p screen. I've got one on order to make skins for, but will likely test it out and keep it if it does well. I've had terrible luck with Intel integrated GPU drivers in laptops so here's hoping they've improved them for Xe.

@@manolinmero to be honest I kind of love thin devices. I mean I always wanted phones to become tinner (back in 2005 when they were like 2-3 cm thick) and the same with laptops. But yes, it has to be within reason. If you can't cool the device, it's pointless. Why pay $400 for a cpu that performs like a $200 cpu because it's constantly on the brink of exploding from heat

@@manolinmero For historical accuracy Apple was the one that pushed this trend into motion. Granted the industry was already starting to turn in that direction but Apple was the one that truly popularized it with it's original macbook air. People loved it and the rest was history as they say.

Why no frame time data or .1% lows? Most of the games looked really stuttery, was that from how you captured it? I wouldn't want to play those games as it looked, did I miss something?

The most stuttery was the Forza horizon 4 but i think it's the XBOX app that has a bug because i get the same stutters too in Ori and Gears 5 sometimes and after i reboot the stutters stop

"I wouldn't want to play those games" ... I definitely would! This GPU is used in the GPD Win3 - a "Switch-like Windows Handheld". So for 720p Gaming in the subway on a 7 inch Display ... who cares about "frame time data"?! I'm pretty sure ETA wanted to test this chip because of the upcoming handhelds and micro pcs. Besides those things can be fixed via driver update, cant they? It's a new chip ... maybe we should give it some time. It is more potent than a Switch ... which is a very good sign for the mobile devices to come.

What? Man we have different ideas of stuttery lol. I thought someone who reviews old tech would be a bit more forgiving. Either way, to me it looks like a better than PS4 experience on a laptop with no dgpu. to me thats pretty damn impressive. He also tried to run the highest settings he could near 60fps, whereas you could instead lower them a bit more and go for a smoother 45ish and still be having a better than PS4 experience. but i also agree with the guy above that .1% lows is a silly metric for people trying to justify buying more cpu cores than they needed. unless i can feel my player motion stutter i could care less. Its .06 seconds of every minute you play. one random dip in a short test can affect that stat a lot, but actually mean nothing in the overall experience.

Didn’t see the stutter, but screen tearing on CS GO. Seen that on every chip with CS GO, so i assume it’s just the game like that

When you say you had to drop the settings to get to above 60 FPS on a laptop, in my day we didn’t drop the Settings until we got below 30 FPS, And that was with a dedicated GPU on a desktop computer, It’s amazing how much processing power we have in the smallest devices nowadays

Thanks for your take on Irix Xe graphics. I have a HP laptop with i7-1260P cpu. I ran Fire Strike last night and got a score of 4778. I am very pleased with it. I have a desktop system that I can game on, but it is nice to know that when traveling I can do some mild gaming.

How your experience with overheating over long periods of time? I'm looking at a $300 laptop with Intel Core i5-1135G7, and the intel iris Xe igpu. I'm a bit nervous it may overheat and damage the CPU during longer gaming sessions

@@ZverseZ I've not gamed for a long period on this laptop, so I can't tell you from my experience. Although, laptops are known to get hot and are designed to take it. So, I don't think it will be an issue.

Recently got an evo laptop and then started dabbling back into gaming. Although not perfect, between cloud gaming and the decent integrated graphics, it's working out for me pretty well.

Oof that chip isn't being cooled that well is it, you can see CPU frequency going up and down all the time to keep it cool.

@@xrayexpertt5364 Finally, undervolting isn't underclocking. You keep the same clocks but with lower voltages, therefore less heat and better perfomance (no thermal throttling).

The cpu temps on such a big laptop is something to be worried about. Maybe a higher quality thermal paste or liquid metal can help boast performance slightly

you need to remember cause its a mobile cpu lol and now they have i9's so its like them calling this an i5 cpu back in the day, they have i7's that are dual core 4 thread.These are older cpu's but they had that naming scheme for laptops a long time ago. anyways who cares what they call it, it gets better performance than AMD's new APU's

@@kyles8524 Because it's a mobile CPU doesn't stop having a low core count being a rip-off. i9's are supposed to be super high end products with the i7 as the high end consumer product in the stack. i5 is mid range and i3 is budget. The prices are reflected in this.

Performance per core is more important in this segment, having fewer core also gives more bandwidth boost for GPU RAM. It's about finding the right balance on constraint power budget.

the intel tuning utility may have been able to give you all the stats? also, were you running the latest system / gpu drivers? it looked like the tray icon showed there were updates

Intel is notoriously slow/bad with updating integrated graphics drivers. I'm sure it will work better in 6 -12 months. It will be interesting to see if Emulation actually works properly with its current set of drivers.

As an answer on 2:06, you could try with the Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility, I use to know the data of my laptop's processor, like thermals, clocks, and even Thermal Throttling, and works really well and accurate, and also, that's a tool from Intel :')

We already know that Intel has been pushing clocks in response to Rizen chips pressure on their marketshare. A lot of the chips are running real hot.

The sad reality is that even amd igpu is really not that great, same old igpus even some using vega ones... When they use rdna2, oh boy, that's gonna be better. Is funny and ironic that intel igpus are suffering driver issues XD.

I’ve noticed quite a few issues on that chip. First of all the temps were extremely high even for a laptop and don’t really think it supports Vulcan API just yet. But I’m pretty sure that a better cooler would do the chip good. That and even faster ram. Let’s say 4000mhz.

I bought a used Thinkpad T14 Gen 3 with IRIS XE as a coffeeshop machine. Nice to know it can run games. I would upgrade the RAM to at least 32GB. Mine had a 8GB soldered chip with one expansion so I have 40GB RAM in it right now. Runs brilliantly.

I read Intel's small 11th gen boards, which I imagine will be the ones used in SBCs, will support AVX-512 and or AVX2. So AV1 encoding with SVT-AV1 will be possible; not realtime, but not crazy slow, either. And it has hardware decode of AV1, I believe. So although ARM boards are getting fast now, there will still be some things these x86 boards can do much faster, as they're including more and more advannced instruction extensions on even smaller chipsets. They're not bringing them all over to the small boards, but the ones that have proven super useful like AVX2/512 are finally being retained on smaller chipsets, which is a big game-changer, as previously they threw out all the cool stuff on small boards.

Thx for the vid. If I play older games or old mmorpg the game just crashes. At this moment the iris xe peaks over 100% and the game is closed like through the task manager with no error Message. Did you have sich experience? Or do you know why?

You've already tested an XE chip in the ONE GX Pro. Though, that difference between the 1160 and 1165 is weirdly drastic CPU wise. More than double the base clock speed, only 300mHz more in Boost mode. Also the GPU gets a slight bump too.

I have got the new Samsung galaxy book pro 360, I have tried several games including cyberpunk 2077 that caps at 29fps on medium settings. I’m I’m massively surprised it can handle a lot of games extremely well despite the fps when running on the Iris Xe

Thanks! Emulators would be interesting to eg yuzu prefers nvidia due to opengl (unl;ess you use Linux?) so would be interesting to see how vulkan vs opengl perform! And a reference to what equivalent AMD vega graphics this is similar to would be great! Many thanks!

same CPU with higher GPD Win 3 model but GPD paired it with LPDDR4x 4266 MHz RAM, iGPU should be heavily making use of that RAM speed (and double channel - quad channel?).

2:26 if you go into sensor tab while your running the graphics benchmark, the boost should show up. i dont think it shows up anymore on the main screen. it should show it under the sensor tab.

This video really needed comparison to something, anything would do like AMD 4500G, other APU or some dedicated GPU. Without comparison I have no idea how fast this iGPU actually is

I have a 19 Watt 1165G7 and the performance isn't even close to what you're getting. My timespy score was 1296 on GPU and 3688 on the CPU. But in games, GTAV is unplayable even at 720P constantly dropping from 40 to 20s, Witcher 3 gets around 35-40 FPS on 720p Medium, CSGO at 1152x864 (4:3 streched) everything low, gets me around 80-90 FPS. So, all in all, don't buy Tiger Lake unless you're absolutely sure of the TDP configurations and tweaks made by tgr OEM or you're gonna have a pretty bad experience

They should just let power users choose how to split the power between cpu and igpu. Tiger lake cpus are decently powerful so most of the time you only want to allocate power to the gpu portion.

You need to optimize it, set everything to high performance add every game to graphics settings on high performance. I also optimize them in Intel graphics command, etc... If you don’t optimize your pc for gaming you’ll have a bad experience. You could also change the power usage, etc...

ETA Prime, have you tried using HWMonitor to check the GPU speed? It's by the same people that make CPU-Z.

One thing I can say about this is just remember that he was also screen recording which uses power from the gpu and cpu.

Considering the Athlon 3000G's (2C/4T) Vega 3 Graphics outperform the i9 10900's(10C/20T) iGPU performance by over double, I have my doubts. With an external GPU, Intel's latest are probably gonna be the best, but their integrated graphics could probably give the GT 710 a run for it's money, IF they're lucky. Lol Edit: This was a pre-video thought, we'll see if I'm right or not, no need to tell me.

I have the same chip on my i7 Acer Aspire 3 and it's really nice, I have a dedicated gaming desktop[ right so I don't care about playing AAA titles on my Laptop, what I am interested in is games like LOL, Bluestacks emulation, a little bit of Eve online or Wow etc and man it handles them all on medium to high settings at the screens native 60fps. I mostly use the laptop for productivity, typing and all that good stuff but I do like to veg out and play League in between editing my CV and I don't have to get up and move to my PC because this little thing has me covered no problems whatsoever.

I like the Coffee Lake Iris for retro gaming and emulators in my NUC, but modern games seem a bit much for even the new Iris.
