It’s not just about memorizing the phrases that they gave you. Yes, the phrases may seem random, but it also helps you memorize words like she he man woman and then you can combine those into a sentence
@latinasawntop
@latinasawntop Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It will be hard to get to a conversational level (like it’s possible but you will need to put in effort). Despite how random it is, like you said, it’s really good for pronouns and random words because you’ll never know if you’ll need to use those words in that language.

Yea, I personally think the Duolingo doesnt work thing is total bullshit. Ive been using Duolingo for two months and went from knowing zero Spanish to knowing enough to get around Colombia decently well and do basic things. If you're serious about learning a language, Duolingo is likely not enough, but to get to a point where you can self teach, Duolingo is great.

That's why I use Duolingo along with other things, like when I learn a new language I start with 5 units of Duolingo, then I start searching for songs and shows that uses that language, I start repeating after them, making sure that I look for the translation, after that I start trying to read kid's books moving my way up to the next age category. Ofc I'd be watching TikTok videos abt that language and of people that speaks it, and try to focus on what they're saying and how're they pronouncing it.

Duolingo is good for on the go practice/vocab learning, but I definitely don't think it's effective on its own. For Korean I'm using TTMIK's work books and I think that's a more effective way, but Duolingo is GREAT for when I'm on the go to practice or do something quick without getting my books out. Plus good at practicing pronunciation and reading Korean while in my TTMIK workbooks I focus more on writing and sentence structure.

That's not technically true. If you go into the exercises portion rather than the regular lessons then they have spoken and listening exercises as well. But on the other hand how do you expect someone to use an app to learn if they don't first learn to read the words. I was studying Russian on the app for a few weeks and you have to learn the Cyrillic alphabet along with the phonetics.

The recordings do sound like the natural language tho. But I agree. What exactly do you think could be added in order to become fluent with duo? Maybe video clips or songs? With the advent of chatgpt and advanced ai, I imagine soon it will become easier for companies like Duolingo to incorporate conversational aspects as well. It's a good starting off point in my opinion but I hope soon they develop more features like this to help people learn faster and more accurately.

It will be pretty hard to add a feature always up-to-date with the korean speaking ways, i wish they would just teach words and meanings and separately teach you how to form sentences with like stories or a duolingo mini show inside the app so you can freely form your own sentences instead of using 1 sentence to explain everything.

Duolingo is a tool to build vocab and grammar. Fluency comes from regular conversations with people that speak the language

For me, duolingo is pretty helpful to build your grammar and vocabulary, but the problem with people who learn languages, is they didn't experimenting with what they learn... For example, people who use duolingo as a game and just go with the flow but didn't take the time to analyze the language formula like what kind of tenses used in certain sentence, how each grammar used in different scenario, didn't take a note, didn't formulate their own sentences, didn't practice conversation with other people, and so on...

I have a friend that is learning Japanese and now he is watching anime in Japanese, no sub and if he does not know a word, he just searches it and tries to remember it. So in this case Duolingo did a good job

Well I guess it took him time to watch anime without subtitle and maybe just understands the gist of the whole sentence by a few words

Step 1- Memorize alphabet and large vocabulary Step 2- Learn to piece them together + grammar rules Step 3- Hire a language coach and start learning by watching tv in Spanish Step 4- Take your skills to war.

I can understand English very well (1-2 years of only english youtube) but I can't really speak it. Is duolingo good for practice grammar and speaking?

What app would you recommend for learning tho 😭
@auntiesnixxx
@auntiesnixxx Жыл бұрын
an app can't make you fluent, you have to speak a lot and listen to natives a lot and converse with them. duolingo + constant exposure can make you fluent, not just an app alone

Using Duolingo is like learning off of flash cards that will only teach you phrases and broaden your vocabulary to an extent

I tried to learn Spanish using Duolingo. I quit after 9 months when I realized that I could talk about how much my cat liked to swim in a swimming pool, but could not ask where the bathroom was.

Duo + family/friends who speak the language you're learning + shows/movies in the language you're learning will help you don't have to necessarily have to have the accent when speaking in the language they should appreciate your efforts in learning the language when visiting the country, but it will help in communication if you have the accent when talking in the language... I'm learning German on duo I haven't watched movies or shows in the language but I'm learning...

Mexican Americans, or at least the ones in California, just laugh at you if you don't have the accent down. I've had friends who know how to speak the language but choose not to because of the amount of ridicule they received over their domesticated accent. And these people tend to also be Mexican American themselves.
