i had bad moss so i did this: 1) create more light/air flow. 2) improve drainage of soil. 3) inhibit the moss with iron and rake out. 4) reseed using suitable grass types - some are good in shade but not in standing water. 5) fertilise to keep the grass healthy. seems to have worked.

Part of my yard was pretty similar. Limbed up the trees covering that part, I spread granular lime 3-4 times a year in the area, 2-3 times a year in the rest of the yard. Then do regular fertilizer treatment and it's helped thicken up my existing turf. It hasn't completely eradicated the moss, but it has significantly reduced the huge patches of moss and helped the grass compete.

There's a product called moss out. It definitely helps combating against it, wouldn't call it a 100% killer. Getting more grass to fill in those areas to help combat muddy and patchy areas will help against standing water. Obviously, also building up the area. This of course, is if you can't change the light levels of said area like mentioned in the video.

Great video and highly informative on moss! I know some people in my area have been asking me about this as well. Tough to get rid of and will likely be a constant battle.

Here in Washington State, moss is a constant problem due to the cooler temperature, abundant evergreen trees (we ain't call the evergreen state for nothing....) and frequent rain. Most lawns will have at least some of it. The way I control them is with ferrous sulfate, you can buy these from your local farm supply or lawn supply places such as Ewing. They come in 50lb bags and can be spread with a fertilizer spreader.

Can I apply and let the moss die or do I have to remove it? Not looking for best results, as our yard is too big. But rather improvement. If killing the moss does nothing without removal .. I'll just let it grow.

We have a substantial amount of moss that appears to grow over the winter. Last spring I did a dethatching and what I think that did was actually spread the moss spores or whatever. This year I’ll try the limbing up of trees technique. If that doesn’t work it’ll be time to accept the moss😂

I use Lilly Miller Moss Out. I haven't had any moss defeat it yet.

Not only did I till soil but I added inches of new soil. Lawn looked great for 8 months then moss is growing everywhere and lawn thinning out. Horrible. Heavy rains washed a lot of soil away. 2 large trees not taking down. So will use Moss Out, rake then mix in Fine Fescue seeds as suggested here.

I built rock gardens and woodland settings including plants that like shade and allowed the moss to enhance by growing naturally. It's scenic and a worry free compromise.

I used Titan RX turf tall fescue this fall and it seems like I had a lot of moss starting to grow with that seed

With the wet year that 2023 was, i now have moss over most of my lawn. It is in direct sunlight most of the day. I am in NJ. How can j beat back the mosx to let my overseeding take over?

In PA, moss is not easy to get rid of. Even if you treat it with chemicals (which is a big no for me), it will eventually come back. Also, I'm looking into using ground cover that hopefully will compete with the moss. It that doesn't work, I might try river rocks with a few blouders tossed in. THE CREATOR BLESS

Ryan, I’m not a fan of using chemicals on the moss problem that is developing on my lawn. I plan on doing some leveling on my lawn, do you recommend removing the moss completely before leveling, or will the moss find its way up through the 1” of topsoil I plan on putting down? Thanks!

Raking out moss and putting topsoil on top of the existing area will only slow the return of the moss. If you can get a fast growing turf in the topsoil that can establish quickly, it will compete with the moss, but short of removing all the existing soil, the spores are going to still be there without some kind of agent.

Don't have moss but we do have alot of crabgrass here in Iowa. What is your recommended treatment for this?

Put a pre-emergent down in April/May before the ground temp gets above 60. From there, spot treat as needed. Pre emergent will prevent the weeds from germinating and minimize future crab grass.

Iron sulphate will kill the moss. Then scarify / re-seed. At least this is what we would use in the UK and we get a lot of moss.

I've been trying to figure out how to get my moss patch larger to take over my lawn. In my area there are no trees it's just the back of the house that doesn't get much sun

Moss out or heavy iron kills it. Then you have black moss.

No one said remove. Trim up is the key and otherwise, find grass that is properly suited to those areas which is what we also talked about.

@@ryanknorrlawncareour lot borders woods on 2 sides. Tree trimming is not a practical option. What about chemicals containing iron? Do they work?

+1 to this feedback. More could have been said on this topic from the interviewees. Tree pruning and trimming is just not feasible in some cases. Pricing tends to be prohibitive. Also, depending on where the trees are on the property, owners don’t want to cut them back because they can be helpful in reducing overall home heating costs in the Summer time. Property owners are trying to have grass AND trees (most people aren’t working in an open field like Ryan when it comes to grass - not a real world scenario for many properties). What this answer failed to include IMHO was the topic of soil acidity. Get a test, find out your levels. Depending on what you discover, liming the property in the Fall and Spring over the next few seasons could improve soil conditions that are less favorable to moss. You could also check your phosphorus levels to make sure that the grass roots are growing deep enough (and prevent moss from coming back). Moss killer is a short term fix IMO. It works, but based on my experience, then you can’t plant new grass seed for a while. I’d only use this in the winter when there’s no snow but the moss is growing rapidly. I’d also looking into whether some French drains could solve your problem. Moving the water away from certain areas could help with drying it out vs “pruning trees” which requires more skilled labor

You can get rid of anything in your lawn. Put on some .10 mil nitril gloves, get down on your hands and knees and pull it out. This method has worked for thousands of years. DUHHHHHH!
