What a wonderful living museum of early 1900's design and engineering. Remember Steel hull vessels like this were only in existence for about 30 years prior so this ship at the time was Future tech and cutting edge. The overall design is steampunk without being overly built up Superstructures like French BB's of the time.

I love the inverted bow, the USS Olympia was launched in 1892 and is the sole surviving ship of the Spanish American war. Other old navy ships of a similar age still in existence are the Georgios Averof, Mikasa, Aurora, HMS Caroline and the USS Texas

I was saddened the first time I learned they were cosmetic reproductions. I would have loved to see how the guns were operated and ammo was handled on the early cruisers/battleships compared to the later ones that are preserved as museums.

Gotta love honesty! But the rest of the ship is real. Been on her many times. Today's standard she is small. Back then she was a force to be reckoned with . Suggest if you are in Philly stop by and take a look

I don't know if you still can, but several years ago I was allowed to examine and operate the breech machanism on one of the casemate guns.

That's too bad that they removed the turrets, though I understand their reasoning. I can also understand the reasoning behind the "artificial turrets", to restore the lines and the appearance of the ship as she was back in her "glory days". She's truly a national treasure.

I watched a video from the Museum Ship mafia last night. Two men showed a Cuban flag from the Spanish American war that was signed by veterans of that war. These two men were in charge of the Buffalo New York Naval park. And they talked about actually donating this flag to your Museum to the USS olympia. Do you know anything about this?

What are the three most UNEXPLINED features or artifacts on the ship? Things that weren't on any plans, and there's no explanation as to why the thing is where it is.

I think Id have left one of the deck guns, and done this on the other position, show how the ship was in both configurations.

Very interesting. I had always thought that Olympia was adorned with fake turrets while an auxiliary ship in WW2, painted in a modern paint scheme and parked in plain sight discourage any German U-boats.

Question: If USS Olympia's design was so successful compared to other cruisers of her time period, why did the US Navy not build many more Olympia-class cruisers?

Congress in the late 1800s and early 1900s didn’t want to fund new naval construction.

Is there any internal remnant of the turret? Can you see the steam tubes that turned her or was there a powder room below? Can you see where it would have been? Would love to see a short video on that. Thanks!

Isn't the ship painted like the ships that were in the "Great White Fleet" trip? In the Spanish American War, it was probably painted grey.

What about the Barbettes? What’s in there?

The barbettes are fake as well. They were removed at the same time as the armored turrets because they were no longer needed. The gun platforms that replaced them were raised off the deck and just had storage space underneath them.
