Your phalaenopsis orchid may go into shock after the transition. Here’s more info: I recommend using a healthy orchid vs a rescue orchid because that transition may cause it to go into shock. It is used to growing in organic material and so that root loss will then cause new roots to grow. Those new roots will then become adapted to this water culture method. Since they are epiphytes (plants that absorb moisture from the humid air, rain, versus from other plants) they will do fine with the wet to dry method. That means allowing the water in the vessel to dry out and then refilling after a few days. Orchid fertilizer can be incorporated during the time in the water that your orchid has no blooms. If you asked me which method is easier: growing in water or the more conventional way like in orchid bark, I’d say orchid bark. Only because of that transition period and I find that I forgot to refill my vessel 🫣 Have you grown orchids in water? What’s the experience been like?

I’m really not having much success with my orchid 😢 it’s almost done blooming but it’s got root rot and I’m not sure what do. Should I just cut the rot and repot? Or wait until it’s done blooming?

Oh and I have a Mini Orchid in bloom right that I recently purchased. I'm determined to keep it growing to see it rebloom. My past issues with orchids are, I keep them for a LONG time with leaves all in different states but never get blessed with a bloom and eventually I neglect them. Perhaps I've been going about it as meh 😑 all this time but not anymore. If Krystal says I can grow it and get a bloom then damn it I can do it. 🫡

@@user-fl3sr2kh5c At the least gently remove the rot parts. What is it planted in? To be safe, I would put the orchid (after removing rot) in orchid bark only.

There are many ways to grow orchids. But I think the easiest one is bark. The kind of soil they come to us in at the stores and the pots they are sold in are good for growing them. I have been growing orchids for about 7 years, there have been many losses and in that time I have gained a lot of experience, so now all my orchids are healthy, growing and blooming. I can give some care tips if anyone needs them: 1. If you bought the plant in the bark and it has no problems with the roots, it is better not to transplant it immediately. The orchid can grow in a shipping pot for a year or more until it becomes too crowded and the roots braid the entire pot. 2. To know when to water your orchid, look at the roots. If they are silvery, you should water them. If they are green, you should wait. I usually put the pot in a container, pour water on 2-3 cm and leave it so for an hour, and then drain the water. 3 It is not recommended to wash and spray the plant. If water gets between the leaves, the trunk of the plant may begin to rot. 4. For the orchid to bloom, it should be given a lot of diffused light and night temperature difference. And I would also like to write that it is plants for us, not us for the plants. So if you have something that doesn't work out or your plants get sick, don't despair. Just find the ones that will grow well for you. For example, my orchids and aroids grow, but my cacti and succulents die. So I just grow what wants to grow at my place. Good luck everyone🌸

I agree with you. Same been growing orchids for 20 plus years and have had many fail. Finally figured out. I leave in cool low light basement in fall for a month or so and bring them back upstairs when they spike or will spike shortly after. The change in temp like Christmas cactus triggers blooming. I follow orchid girl. She knows a ton about orchids. But it’s ok to experiment. See what works for you. Every bit is helpful. Interesting water culture though. 👍

You can go vase culture with thick rooted orchids. Take the glas, no water on the bottom, put the cleaned plant in. Once or twice a week, you fill the glas with fertilized water and drain it after about 10-30 minutes.

I bought my orchid from Walmart and it started to decline pretty quickly due to root rot, I read that putting them in diluted black tea signals the rainy season in the jungles they are found in, the tea has tannins in it replicating the tannins in the bark they grow on. This tells the orchid it's raining and it's time to grow! It's been about a year and mine has since regrown it's roots plus 4 new leaves! It's a slow process but it works 💪 trust me it takes a while but a lil aquarium water in a cup and a few dunks of a tea bag till the water turns light brown, trim off all the dead roots and balance it SO JUST THE ROOT END IS IN THE TEA WATER, with time heat and love you'll start to see new growth from both ends usually it starts with new roots then it moves on to replacing it's leaves! Give this a try and let me know your results!

@carirose79612 ай бұрын
According to her other videos (I've been watching her too much lately) she recommends not repotting in general while it's blooming. Typically orchids aren't in bloom for a super long time, so it's better to enjoy them while they're there and THEN do any maintenance after the blooms die off (such as repotting, trimming, or changing mediums) The change to just water stresses them at first, and since it causes a bit of root loss, most likely it'll lose its blooms quicker too.

I love all your videos. You're an inspiration. However, as an owner of over 200 asst orchids, I definitely don't advocate for growing in water. It's like the old ice cube marketing. Sure, it'll work for a while. Sometimes, a long while. But, eventually, it will kill them. They just weren't designed for these unusual practices. However, I freely admit that I have learned SO much about my other houseplants from you. You're awesome! 💕🌺
@QueenMotherTroll2 ай бұрын
I've had my grocery store rescue in water for almost 2 years.... And in those 2 years I've added many more to that collection.... Just because you "think" you know everything about a certain plant because you own so many... Just like I tell my 4th grade special Education classroom often "We all learn something new everyday even when we think we know it all." But however don't tell someone something won't work because xyz unless you've tried then tried again and know it doesn't work.... And even then it might not have worked the way you were doing it... So with all due disrespect go try something new 😉
@teresabrockett75252 ай бұрын
@QueenMotherTroll I did not claim to know everything, and with all due respect, 2 years is very short in the life of an orchid. ;)

It's not that it doesn't work. It's that it's just easier to grow in some conditions. No one is judging the author of the channel for the growing choices she makes. We all watch her and admire her, her plant collection and her growing methods. I think the author of the comment just wanted to warn that it is difficult to follow an experimental approach without having proper experience in plant care. You are right when you say that people are lifelong learners. There are just ways to make things easier - I think that's what the comment above was about.❤ @@QueenMotherTroll
