A couple of weeks ago I visited the Bechstein Showroom in Berlin. There were so many beautiful instruments there so I tried out a few and then decided to record a little something on 3 of them. These were the Bechstein Academy, Residence and Concert series. I thought the best way to test them and for you to have an objective idea is through playing the same piece on all of them. In this comparison, I played Chopin's Etude op.10 no.6. What do you think? Which one do you like the most?

Great video - next time in Berlin I will check the store! Concert well yes, but it is quite a step from a price point of view. So, it would be Academy for me. Concert sounds like a Grand Piano but Academy is so good already, so clear and vibrant in upper tones, just this added brilliance, while warm and touching in the middle. The texture of the sound just gets me. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks so much for this comparison. There are very few such side by side performances on KZfaq. The differences between the Academy and Residence are there but nothing compared to the Concert 8. However, the Concert is a much taller piano so will be able to elicit a far greater dynamic range with quieter playing than the others. But that aside, the clarity of Concert 8 is something to behold. No wonder it is considered by many to be the best upright in the world.

Great playing. I think they both sound great (in an amateur’s perspective the least). I think it all boils down to the skill, passion, and attitude of the pianist. You’re like the piano whisperer. :)God bless.

The concert is amazing. But, if you are an amateur, just learning or on a budget, the Academy is no slouch and within reach. I even liked the Academy over the Residence but just by a hair so to speak. The Concert is sublime.

Evgeny you ask which instrument I like best - honestly, all three are wonderful, incredibly beautiful instruments in their own way, it just depends on the taste and the budget and honestly the absolutely best manufacturer of pianos and grand pianos offers a mega Portfolio ranging from the Zimmermann Line to the W. Hoffmann Line and then the Academy series to the Concert series - everything that makes the hearts of hobby and professional musicians beat faster. Not to forget the extremely fruitful cooperation with CASIO, all of these instruments from C. BECHSTEIN that I have just listed are top class in their segment and price category. 🎹🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎵🎵🎶

The challenge is that both the Academy and Residential were recorded on the bass side and the Concert on the treble. It’s giving the Concert tenor and treble an unfair advantage based on proximity of recording device.

Holy cow! The differerences are amazing and well beyond just nuances. The Academy has an even, mellow and rich sound. The Residency overall is brigther, with a beautiful mellow bass, though left and right hand are still even in character. But the clarity and beauty of the Concert just blew me. That's a totally different level (also pricewise I'm afraid). It sound rich, warm and clear. The music expands in depth and character, but you can hear every single note much better than on the other two. The rich body of the left hand and the clarity of the right hand are clearly discernibly. Also, the colour of the tone changes with volume, and after all that's what marks out the excellence of piano-building. Beautifully played on all three instruments. Here's the nasty question: with a price tag of 35.000 €, would you buy the Concert 8 or rather an Academy grand piano?

Thank you for this Evgeny, you play with remarkable sensitivity. I came here because I’m considering upgrading my Yamaha SU7 to a Bechstein, I haven’t found a Concert 8 to try but have played the Academy 124 and a Residence 118 this week (in that comparison to my surprise I preferred the smaller piano!). Obviously the sound I’m hearing here is limited by the iPad I’m listening on but to my ears the Residence sounds the cleanest with good note separation and clarity as well as excellent resonance. I hear so much praise for the Concert 8, am I missing something, I wonder if it’s to big a sound for most European sized rooms/homes, does it need a lot of space to breath, if so that would negate the reason most people (including myself) buy uprights in the first place. What are your thoughts…

I may have heard of, I don't know, 300 classical pieces at least... I don't know why when it is a piano demo, they always want to play a piece that is not the top 100 pieces that people are familiar with. When you play a piece a person hears for the first time, how are they going to compare it with what they have heard before?
