In this video we are going to explore whether or not you can install a tv above a fireplace. Most people feel that you cannot put a tv above a fireplace because the wall will simply be too hot. Which in some cases can be true. We are going to look into 2 different options for install that will allow a tv above a fireplace. The first is, you simply have the tv high above the fireplace opening. Usually you want the wall no hotter than 120 degrees. So one simple solution is to install tv at a higher point on the wall. Naturally the further away from the fireplace that you are, the cooler the wall is going to be. The problem with this is, most people don't want the tv that high on the wall as it makes tv watching unenjoyable.
Thankfully there is a second solution, a lot of fireplace manufactures have come out with technology called a cool wall kit. What does this mean? Well they are vents off the top of the fireplace, that go in behind the tv. You then have a heat release above the tv. Where the extra heat comes out of the heat release. This allows for wall temperatures to be much cooler! Usually an executable distance will be about 6"-12" inches or so. This is a great solution to the problem of having to mount a tv too high. There is one down side however. Some people will not like the visual effect that the cool wall heat release has for the desired look the homeowner is going for.
So there are a few solutions! Hope that helps!!

My 64" Samsung plasma tv (which tend to run hot) has been above my wood burning fireplace for 8 years this month in my home in Rochester (built in 1924). I use my fireplace 4 to 5 nights per week all winter long and typically have pretty large fires. TV works as good as the day it was mounted there.

thanks for the informative videos. I'm designing a bump out wall on a covered deck to include a ventless gas fireplace with a TV above. The TV will be recessed ~ 12" into the bump out to protect the TV during fireplace operation. TV would be on articulating arm to pull out/angle down for viewing. Hoping this will help extend the life of the TV but I realize that any "non-outdoor" TV operated outdoors won't last too long due to humidity and dust.

Hi, Our fireplace wall is in large ceramic tiles / concrete look. Are they heat conductor ? Our ceiling is 11,5 feet high. The TV is at 4'4" from the floor and 2' high from the fireplace glass. Can we put a mantel / shelve to stop the heat from getting to the TV ? If yes, what would be the depth of the mantel. WE wanted put an old barn shelf 7' 1/2 " depth x 57 wide. Our TV is 48 " wide. Good video. Would a mantel assist? I’m finding that our Mezzo (heat coming out from the front of fireplace) we had to install a decent shelf to assist heat to deflect off the TV. Good point about positioning TV. Even if you could put one close to the fireplace, aesthetically it doesn’t look good. A decent gap between the fireplace and TV is aesthetically better as long as the TV isn’t too high (15 inches is good). I’ve seen TVs a few inches about a fireplace and it doesn’t look good to me. What do you think?
@embersliving
@embersliving 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. some of the training classes we have been to. Sometimes the heat can wrap around the mantel more vigorously then if it wasn't there. I suppose it depends on depth of mantel, how efficient the fireplace is, and a few other variables. But your right, there are a few different solutions to this problem, and I agree about the TV height!
@josephj6521
@josephj6521 4 жыл бұрын
Embers Fireplaces & Outdoor Living thank you for replying. :) Yes, the mantel’s width makes a difference. We initially installed one at the same width as the TV (well, the fireplace installer said it won’t be an issue). I tested this theory by extending the mantel on one side temporarily with spare aluminum and wow, you’re correct. The mantel extended on one side, the TV felt cooler. Things you learn after purchase as there aren’t comprehensive answers to all scenarios. I think the main thing is our fireplace has a high output. Does a higher output fireplace have larger flames? I’ve read about other brands with lower output having smaller flames. Or, depends on the brand? It was impossible to see all brands in action as not all were available to view in showrooms or online. But, a nice fireplace seriously makes a positive impression within the home and we love it!

You cannot use in infrared thermometer in the way demonstrated here. The built-in laser is very deceptive. They typically have about a 10:1 distance-spot ratio. Meaning if you are standing out 8 feet back from the wall in the video, you're measuring a "spot" on the wall just smaller than 1 foot. The laser dot is only representative of the center of the measuring zone or "spot". So, for example, you measured over 200F at 6" above the fireplace. Obviously the surface of the wall is not 200F. But part of your big measuring "spot" was the fire itself, throwing off your reading. To use an infrared thermometer, you need to stand much closer and basically forget about the laser. Honestly manufacturer's shouldn't have even included the laser because that leads to misconception of how they measure, and subsequently, their misuse. Nobody needs laser precision when aiming a gun with a 10:1 ratio so there's really no reason for the laser.

Unless you enjoy sitting at the first row in movie theaters, the center of the TV should be right above eye level when sitting. Above a fireplace is the worst possible place you could mount a TV. Eyes and neck strained, pupils going crazy because of the bright flame, image being like shit because of the angle... I don't know who started this idea in US but you're doing it all wrong. I don't really understand the reasoning behind this? You find some TV's have their operating temperatures range as 32 °F - 104 °F (and ranges differ between TV's so please check). So that doesn't mean its ok to put the TV in a 120 °F range? Having the TV outside the recommended range risks it failing completely. Also, even if you find a spot for the TV where the operating temperature is at 104 °F, its not recommended you do so, in fact its best practice to operate at room temperate which can be considered to be around 68 °F. If you do put it in an 104 °F environment (or top of the recommended range) I would argue that it is risky as temperatures can flucuate which still puts your TV at risk. The TV may not blow up or anything and you may be fooled to thinking everything is fine, but be cautious that you are secretly degrading the TV and therefore decrease longevity of the product.

Operating temperature ranges are provided specifically for users to avoid damaging/degrading the television. Just a very quick Google search gave me an example by Samsung on their LCDs - www.samsung.com/ca/support/tv-audio-video/lcd-tv-will-very-cold-or-very-warm-temperatures-affect-my-lcd-tv/

I have a fireplace in my condo that I never use the tv is going above that shit and getting mounted lol I will keep the fireplace off though since it’s the regular old school wood burning and I hate cleaning up that mess. I hear you though better to be safe and just not use the fireplace with it over it.

@@Josh-py9rq Sounds like a good compromise. I would like to add these guys are selling fireplaces, not really sure they are at liberty to tell others what temperatures all our TV's are perfectly ok to run on. It is suspicious they did not even advise for people to check the operational temperature range of your television which differs between brand and screen technology. Do they even care about your TV? It may be that the blanket explanation they provided benefits them because people will just believe the fireplace people and buy a fireplace.

If your fireplace is vented correctly the wall is not getting hot, I'm not sure why he is doing this video and standing that far back proves it. that ir thermometer is a cone so the further back you stand there larger the area it catches, he is clearly reading part of the glass, the wall is not 200° or 140 at that he literally touches the wall he just said was 200

Worst thing you can have a do is mount a TV above a fireplace, it's not only a question of heat, the fact is it's complete unatral to have your head bent up in the air, it's a, very bad viewing experience, ie your eyes should be level with the centre of the screen...

The question is not CAN you install a TV above the fireplace. It is SHOULD you install a TV above the fireplace. Almost universally the answer is and emphatic NO. This is not about heat or damaging your TV. It's about neck position and comfort while watching. Doing this give you an unnatural viewing angle. The center of your TV should be about the same height as your eyeballs while you are in the position where you most often watch. So sit in your couch and look straight ahead. That spot on the wall (probably about 3 feet up from the floor) should be the center of your TV. Unless you have a crazy short fireplace, or you mostly watch TV while standing, do not put the TV over the fireplace.

Several factor you need to consider is the size of the TV, and how far are you sitting from the TV. This affects the “eyeball” level in correlation to “neck strain”.
