Pine is a soft wood
@tiffanysandmeier4753
@tiffanysandmeier4753 3 жыл бұрын
I looked up what the actual difference between hardwood and softwood is, and it doesn't have anything to do with the density of the wood, but its seed. Balsa is super soft, but categorized as a hardwood. Yew is pretty hard (harder than some oak), but it is a softwood. Depending on what type of pine that board was, that might have been a medium density wood, so maybe not so soft.
@artandhugs
@artandhugs 3 жыл бұрын
There may be some official definition of hard vs soft wood, but in woodworking there is a unspoken understanding of it. I do woodturning and you begin to learn which woods are hard and which ones are soft. Most coniferous trees are soft woods, but species like cypress, sycamore, and Long Island pine are hard enough to work with. Some hard woods are soft relative to other hard woods, examples being sweet gum, poplar, and cedar.
@ivarlaupet8972
@ivarlaupet8972 3 жыл бұрын
@@tiffanysandmeier4753 Actually it does have something to do with the hardness of the wood. Originally it was called hardwood because wood like oak etc. was hard and pine was soft and then, when scientists needed a name for different groups of trees they just stuck with these names.

@mr.mickles 3 жыл бұрын
@@Chumbucket187 lol yes, but it was harder than the resin "tool", but on top of that, pine being a very soft wood it can have VERY hard spots in the grain and in knots. A thick pine grain line can be as hard as concrete and has been the bane of many a cutting tool. Also, there are "hard pines" like long leaf pine which can indeed be quite hard. If you starve some types of pine of water and force them to grow at incredibly slow rates, it can actually be much harder than oak as the grain will nearly be all of the resting ring type and not the fast growth ring.
