Can You Play Blues on a Metal Guitar?! | What Would SRV Do?

There are many different types of guitars on the market! There are electric guitars, acoustic, classical, arch top, etc. With in those types are sub genres and specialty instruments ad nauseam. If you are into a particular style of music then you can be guaranteed that there is a guitar made and marketed to that specific style. This is a great thing! This specialization means that guitar scale lengths, hardware, tremolo, body style and pickups can be made to suit a style of music. But, do these strengths become weaknesses when the instrument is asked to do something it was not specifically made and marketed to do? Imagine if the Ibanez JEM, the signature model of Steve Vai had been the preferred guitar of Stevie Ray Vaughn, instead of a Stratocaster. Would it change our perspective or would it even work?! Let's find out!

My first guitar was a Martin Stinger Strat, black with a white pick guard cus all I wanted was to sound like Eric Clapton. I quickly found out that I hated the shape of its neck, and pretty much any Strat by any brand I tried. What I fell in love with was a Wizard II on the Ibanez RG series. What I bought was an RG470 with a George Lynch Screaming Demon humbucker at the bridge. I can assure you that yes, a guitar typically associated with metal can work with blues. I spent many hours playing SRV, Hendrix, Cream, and Robin Trower among others on that guitar

Honestly you can play any style of music on any guitar. It comes down to two things: the player and the tone (which comes from a combination of the effects, amp settings used and the speaker in the amp or cab). Granted, some styles sound better on certain on other guitars, but honestly I think if you're a blues and all you've got is say an 8 string kiesel, I think you could manage.

Anyone who says you can’t play blues on this... totally missing what makes the blues the blues. It’s not the guitar that makes the blues, it’s the musician. Also have never heard Steve vai play. The man can play every style. Of course the Jem can play the blues

I like to play blues on a Les Paul, an Ibanez S, a GS Mini, a ukulele, an old Simon & Patrick, a flute, or whatever instrument I can use. They each have their own sound. They are all fun in their own way. What makes blues fun is that you can play it anywhere with anyone even if you've never played together before.

There is a big difference between low output humbuckers and high output humbuckers / active pickups. The sound of Gibson's Classic 57' and the sound of EMG's are tremendously different for exemple, especialy on the dynamics of the sound, the response from pick attack, output volume as well, etc. That being said, you can blues the shit out of any guitar with any pickups configurations and any amp. The sound comes from the player, not the gear anyway. BUT will the tone be delicious ? I doubt

@@jannatinkarlen8702 : yes and no, lots of rock/shred/metal players use Duncan JB and Jazz humbuckers. Those are also used for blues (and jazz). Especially the JB has quite some output. I'm not talking about the "full shred" or "nazgul". Those might be a bit much :)

Awesome playing, but I prefer cleaner neck sounds. This one sounded really good on the single notes in the higher registers, but got it got a little fuzzy for me when playing the muti note double stops and whatnot. Then again, anything with humbuckers probably will. I suspect those in that guitar were a little hotter than avg though.

IM from Mississippi where blues is a common style, I also play Ibanez primarily but was wondering what pickup position you were using? It has a 5 way and you can bluesier tones in the 3,4 and 5 position. And back off the volume knob just a touch. But as in earlier comments if you play the Blues it really Dosent matter what you play it on. Keep up the good work guys

It is virtually all about marketing. Page used a Tele for Led Zep 1 , Blackmore and Hendrix used Strats, Sonic Youth Jazzmasters - the list is endless. Maybe less these days as pro musicians are either given or paid to play a company’s guitars and that will likely be based on the market segment they are looking to exploit.

Cooper's playing was stellar. There is no doubt you could play any style on a Jem. The Infinity pups in this Jem are not producing a nice Blues tone. Could've done with something a bit 'warmer'. They sounded a bit too 'broken up' as well. Maybe they're simply too high output? It's difficult to know if Amp EQ could have fixed this. It would be interesting to hear the same test with a Jem7V rather than this Jr. The Dimarzio Evo's are quite a lot more 'twanky' and potentially a better fit for Blues.

As the saying goes…it doesn’t matter what you play it on, it matters what you play on it. You can play some low down, greasy, soulful blues on a shredder guitar even tho it doesn’t look the part, such as in this video. If this was on a recording, no one would know that the guitar used for it was a hot pink, Ibanez JEM made for metal. So I say go for it, break the rules, and use a heavy metal guitar for the blues.

Well... You can play blues on the Vai as Cooper showed us but didn't have the distinc sound of a single coil we recognize immediately and love , coil split mod and you're good then. Single coil in the neck is optimum. I mostly prefer HSS Strat, P90's or Traditional Tele. I do have 3 HSH, 2 are Strats. No c.split but sounds good.1 is a metal guitar and the neck H B is not. that good for blues. May swap that out.

This is way more of an amp question than guitar question but even than yes you can play Blues on a "metal amp"... case in point Joe Bonamassa uses an 1987 Silver Jubilee Marshall 2555 and a JCM 800... soooo i think the answer is... If you can play the Blues and to you personally its more than just music? Than yes your Zach Wild Epiphone full on active pickups freggin Kerry King signature JCM 800... yes you can play the blues... Hell I play Blues and I have an Ibanez Tone Blaster TBX150R solid state amp, made in China.... Not gonna lie the amp has fantastic tone for metal... but my main amp is a Ceriatone Marshall JTM45 head with 2 1955 made in England KT66 "windowed" smoked glass brown bottom tubes, and I used the Ibanez TBX150R as a cabinet... because the 2 Ibanez speakers housed within were made in Japan...

Of course we can. However a guitar like that on SRV's hands would probably be out of tune ( even with nut lock on ) once he would beguin to really pull the strings with bendings. I have a friend who is a blues guitarrist and I saw him pull all the strings when bending so that the top E string joined the bottom E string, on a Floyd equiped guitar, and the temolo went beserk and the guitar went out of tune, pretty quickly.
