I love seeing these model games where a higher rated player just shows how to play a position so much cleaner than their opponent. Squeaky clean middlegame play from Carlsen!

I'm surprised you did not explain why Nxe4 works in the second position but not the first because it is a very obvious question with a very subtle answer!

Yes, perhaps I could/should have done, but having done a video on that first game I wanted to focus on this second game. Nevertheless, I am glad it prompted you to ask the question and analyse the position yourself!

Thanks for the reply and may I just say, keep up the great work. Continuing your Fischer series with the 1972 match vs Spassky is my suggestion!@@PowerPlayChess.

I also wondered about this. Haven't looked at it with engine etc. but I calculated (from 3.18), 1. ... Nxe4 2. Nf5 Bxf5 3. Rxf5 Nxg3 4. Rxf7 Qxf7 5. Bxf7+ Kxf7 6. Qf3+ and 7. Qxc6 will leave the R on a8 and N on g3 hanging. Never thought about any of this when watching first video. "Heard melodies are sweet but those unheard are sweeter' as someone once commented.

also didnt put into the engine but also after Nxe4 if Nf5, Bxf5, Rxf5, Ng6 to block f7 maybe Qf3 forking both knights?@@rolandkensdale1889

Magnus played some beautifully instructive and elegant games for Norway in the European championships. Very illuminating analysis. Thanks Daniel.

that's a good little pattern to file away with the knight and bishop

It looked like Gretarsson may have been expecting the first Nh4 possibility, and may even have prepared Ne4 as a defence, but missed it second time around.

Would you consider possibly posting the PGN of the games too? Makes it easier to save games rather than going through the database (especially rapid)? :) Also, the content is amazing! Your commentating really brings a lot of story into these games.

Seems like h6 earlier in this opening to prevent that pin will become necessary.

At what point might Carlsen's play, especially with white, risk being labeled too 'formulaic,' as was sometimes said of Karpov during his dominant years? Although to be fair to Karpov it was Fischer who patented the 'Karpov style' of always nudging the opponent, maneuvering, regrouping, probing, always moving forward even with the most minimal of advantages in the simplest of positions.

Well, GM Gretarsson must not be a PowerPlayChess subscriber! I would(and) have lost in a completely different way to Carlsen. :) Nice game Magnus.

The plan of white getting its knight to f5 is/should be no big deal. The trouble in the first game is that black exchanged his white squared bishop with white's bishop. Had black retained his white squared bishop, he could have exchanged it for white's knight upon reaching f5.
