I used to live in the West End. Since I worked in the neighborhood, I didn't need a car and walked almost everywhere. Occasionally I used my Compass card to take the bus and skytrain. I cut down on meat, eggs, juice, and alcohol and I found I didnt miss any of those things. I shopped at No Frills and used my PC points to pay for my groceries, which always cost under $100. I bought my furniture at second-hand stores. For fun, I hung out at the beach, went to street festivals, tried different restaurants, and visited friends in other neighborhoods. That's how I was able to survive living in Vancouver on a budget.

It always astounds me how expensive Vancouver has gotten. You went over the budget, and didn't even add snacks, or other essentials that need to be bought on a semi-regular basis like toilet paper, shampoo, dish soap, toothpaste.

Thanks for the video! Crazy how expensive Vancouver is. It would be really interesting if you went through this again for a two working parents at minimum wage vs living wage (defined by the city of Vancouver at over $20/hr).

Nice video. But you forget to mention about MSP health plan which is 75 $CAD and also you calculated transport for one way which is 73.5$. x 2 to return back home i.e. 147$( there are monthly plan also available) .

@@lizethwong381 You would save a lot of money by picking up a used bike. Then use the saved money to save up for a scooter or ebike so you don't have to pedal so much or at all. Then you're only transport costs would be electricity. With things being so tight we really need to think outside the box

I' BC born and have been living in Metro Vancouver since 1984. My MSP has been included in my yearly income taxes for at least a year now. What is this CAD$75 monthly MSP you're referencing?

You might need to double the transit cost as you have to pay again when going home unless you're still within 1.5 hr of free transfer, which is unlikely. For students, they might need to go to campus 3-5 times a week. But with the premise of this video of doing part time job to make $1000/month, you might need to pay transit fare again to get to work. At this point, it's easier just to get 1 zone monthly pass (assuming it's 1 zone), which is just around $102

He multiplied by 30 though. You won't be commuting every day of the month. 20h work a week, that could be 4 5h shifts a week, 8x2.45 is $20, four weeks, $80. Add another $20 for random trips, that's $100. Not far off his $70. But frankly, this is Vancouver, main reason to live there as a Canadian is the mild weather so get a cheap bicycle. Good for the heart, reducing stress and it burns calories.

It’s a nice approach but finding a rental under 700 will be far away and for sure you will need a 3-zone compass card to travel to school and work and back home. That will be 180 CAD 😖😖 definitely you need a job over minimum wage, I have made well with a part time paying 22 an hour.

I lived in Vancouver for 7 years while I went to school. Beautiful city, but I left as soon as I graduated. The ridiculously high cost of living, constant construction noise, and bougie people turned me off from the place. Everyone there's justification for living there was that "it's Vancouver" as though the city were synonymous with paradise. Just a lot of hype imo. Tons of recent grads refusing to work for the man, trying to make it as influencers. Your standard of living in Van will depend on where you live and how deeply you are willing to sacrifice. For example, I've lived in Kerrisdale in three separate places. In the worst example, there were 5 of us in a basement suite. No fire escape and the windows had bars. One of the bedrooms didn't even have a window, like a giant closet. Landlord was no help because they lived in Shanghai - I am not even kidding. The summer before I had moved in, the landlord had rented the entire house out to a dozen young German tourists. $750 a pop. Mind you this was a Tudor heritage home in Kerrisdale. But as far as cities go, you can't beat Vancouver. If I had to live in a "big" city, Vancouver would be the one. Now I'm happy as can be in my small town on Vancouver Island.

internet is about 100 dollars a month, its is really expensive to live here. If people are coming from the US, they would be shocked at the prices for everything. Food is about 100 dollars a week, and that is living cheap, but not junk food.

I pay for rent 550 including utilities not in Vancouver and my college gives me a student compass card which cost 46 dollar per month and I pay 40 dollar for 25 gb and unlimited calls and messages and I pay around 150-200 for groceries so it is a bit more than 800 for me and yes I am earning 1000-1100 per month

Excellent as usual Adam. The one cost factor one has to consider if say you choose Edmonton or Winnipeg to live in would be the almost absolute necessity of good, reliable transportation since the weather and larger land mass to cover really negate daily reliance of public transportation. So factor in 500 to 1000 monthly for safe reliable transportation including gas, registration and insurance.

Luckily healthcare is free in Canada. In the USA you'd be out of luck I'd guess. Over here in The Netherlands mandatory health insurance is $150-ish/person. But if you make this little money there are state benefits for both rent and health insurance so that helps.

Healthcare in Canada is garbage!!! More like pretend healthcare. Also the quality is droping like crazy. In the US there are programs to help people that can't afford healthcare, I notice people neglect to mention that. This also depends on where you are, the farther you are from a major city the worse the problem gets and by major, I mean over 1 million people. This was a problem before the pandemic that only got worse!

If you put your home on the bike then you can work for DoorDash and use the flip to handle orders. Now you have a Job too and the best part is your home is always right there. Looking for the bright side 😎

for 2. I'm assuming a motorcycle and yes it is cheaper but depending on your years of driving and your record in general (accidents, claims, fault/nofault), it may not be that much cheaper. Also depends on how old your bike and car is and also what kinds of insurance you have added on. Theres lots of factors involved to really see the final cost but generally, it is cheaper

Key is not live exactly in Vancouver city, but in Vancouver metro area or little further like Abotsford or White rock, even Squamish is cheaper

I think these are pretty unrealistic numbers and living actually to those numbers would be a crappy lifestyle and where do you leave clothing?, certainly uncomfortably

When the west end downtown was mainly rentals in the eighties (condo's were pretty much the higher end of the market) you could date women your own age with their own jobs, place, car, and money. Not today. Too bad, as there were so many other cheap events going on; today a ticket to Science World costs a big red one: Fifty dollars?? No. End of an era, but no place is what is was forty years ago, or more.

You won't get Novus internet in the trash basement suit you found. You would also need to pay for 2-3 zone transit ticket to commute from that basement suit. You won't be able to buy food for a day at No Frills for $5, because chicken alone costs more than that. You also didn't include cost of any hygiene products. You also didn't include sales tax on everything you buy. I hate videos like that because they mislead people.
