Will You Make It With $1500/m?
A lot of people moving to Colombia come with the intention of spending a lot less than where they're coming from. It is a fact, that Colombia is less expensive than most western countries, but that doesn't automatically mean you'll spend less.
The biggest issue for most people, is to adapt to a new lifestyle. They usually move to Colombia expect the same things for little money. Well, it most probably will be less expensive than back home BUT you'll most probably not be able to make it with a budget of $1500 or less.
Why?
- Need more space
- Get the imported goods
- Deliver a lot
The above listed reasons are just a few of many reasons why a lot of people won't make it with a low budget in Colombia.
Watch the whole video, and find out how you'll be able to lower your spendings.
Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

My wife & I have been living in Rio Negro for almost a year...& I can confirm that 1200.00 a month budget is very reasonable & can be done. Especially outside of Medellin in surrounding areas(do alot of research & visit areas more than once...IE La Ceja,El Carmen). At first our groceries we're more than we expected because we were buying American products from Jumbo & Exito but we adjusted to local markets & our cost has gone way down. Spanish is a must & budget buying discipline is key. The nice thing is when you save money on living cost you can save for little treats...get aways or splurge dining.

Thanks Sam. So I think it's all subjective. I live Sabaneta. Fully furnished, gated with 24hr attendants, quiet neighborhood. I have a 2bd 2 bath all included apartment. And I spend about $500 p/m. I dont speak Spanish. I'm learning. I do cook and I order out. I use Rappi (delivery) for EVERYTHING! Especially due to quarantine. I shop at Price Smart (Costco) and get smaller size item from Exito or Carulla. I'm not an bargain hunter, I'm more of a convenience person. I spend about $250 per mo on food. It's just me, so no family. In total I live on about $1000-$1200. Quarantine has made it easier because I cant go anywhere. Otherwise I'd be taking Uber and eating out more. So it just depends on your lifestyle and you can adjust.

I live in Armenia Quindio. We can easily get by on US $800/month and not feel like we have a cramped lifestyle. It’s a matter of choices as the video says but time to time you may spend much more. My residency visa cost $1.5 million pesos plus additional associated costs, vehicle tax, storage, insurance and so on that can spike a monthly expense.

An expat must make a decision early on how he wants to live. Does he want to exist or does he want to enjoy life? It is reasonable to live on $1000, but if he chooses to come here money should not be the deciding factor. A single man who lives in an AirBNB will be fine on $1500/month with money left over. But Sam makes a great point. If he brings his mentality with him from his own country and hangs out with only expats, the cost will be a lot higher.

I´m Colombian and live in Medellín specifically Downtown. You got a interesting and true point. If you only buy your food in supermarket like EXITO, PRICESMART OR JUMBO is more expensive. In Medellín is possible to find low cost markets like H&H or D1. If you are not afraid to explore places like PLACITA DE FLOREZ IN downtown you cand find essencial productos with low bugget. Most of the expats are used to stay in ENVIGADO, POBLADO or LAURELES but in those neighborhoods you cannot expect to live low budget buying exclusively in stores like CARULLA.

I am Colombian and I live with my family of 3 in Bogotá, we are not millionaires, rather we are part of 20% of the upper scale in Bogotá and our monthly expenses are $ 4000 USD per month. In Colombia, the average salary income is very low and you can live with that, but you would have to live in unsafe areas, very remote and with bad education for your children. Here if you want to live, support your children, have health and safety for your family, you have to pay very high extra, otherwise you have to survive with the little that the (public) government offers and that is of very poor quality. You must bear in mind that Colombia is one of the most unequal countries on the planet, the difference between the 10% of the top scale can be at least 20 times that of the 10% of the bottom scale and there are differences in the cost of living in the same city. I am not proud of that, but it is our reality.

Big city life is always expensive or overrated places. Colombia or anywhere. San Miguel Allende, Guadalajara, Monterrey in Mexico sort of trail Medellin....why move abroad not speak the language and buy American food..? Smaller towns can be cheaper. Not sure if they are cheaper in Colombia but in many areas in Mexico they are great small towns where $700 makes your living okay if you are frugal and your lifestyle does not mean owning the latest hype of anything. If else Mazatlán Mexico is better choice than Medellin but costs depend on your lifestyle. No pollution in Mazatlán.

I´m surprised you didn´t mention the different "estratos" 1 - 6, (the different priced neighborhoods). Cali is cheaper than Medellin and yet it is a big city with 3 million people. You can find a much more reasonable place to stay at estrato 3. I definitely wouldn't go lower than that. I lived in estrato 5 the whole time and paid between 200 - 400 dollars a month. The $400 house was huge. 4 large bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Apartment bedrooms are way too small. Not much space for anything else other than the bed. It is extremely hard to find a place that doesn't require a co-signer.

2 M COP for an apartment in a safe and quiet area is not so unrealistic. Like he said in the video, if you know where to search or know locals, you can find cheaper apartments, but if not it can be dificult. Also because of the fiador thing. And life is not just apartment and food. You also have to pay water, gas electricity, internet, cable tv, phone, health insurance, etc. I think he is right, when he says, you can live with 1000/1200$ but it is easy to spend much more.

Local restaurants are quite inexpensive and put out a decent meal. Do you two eat out very often or at all? As an older single male, I could get by on 2 decent meals a day and am guessing for no more than $10 total or $300 a month which may be expensive to some but worth it for me. Is this realistic?

Been here 3 years and most of my day is spent speaking english to the USA. When I moved here I thought I knew a little spanish. But heck no!!! I would say after 3 years I speak as well as a 4 year old. I can't seem to get the ear for understanding whats being said. Its a big deal to at least speak as well as a 12 year old would be my suggestion.

@@augustbrante8117 The biggest problem I’ve found with learning Spanish is that it is spoken quickly. Whereas German is easier for a native English speaker because it is spoken at the same pace.

You give me advise with each video so I am giving you advice. You can grow your subscriber base if you would stop being so serious. Have fun. Show us a reason to be in Colombia. Laughter, love, entertainment is what people want to view. You can say your serious stuff but mix it up with something interesting. Perhaps film from a football game with nice ladies and food.

Colombia is getting expensive because of people and videos exactly like this. The only consolation is that most of you guys are in the lower financial stratas and you will soon help to price yourself out of your own city.

From KZfaq ers in mexico they said to pay for things always in pesos. They suggested getting a capital one card that pays in pesos and then you pay it from your American bank account. This is to avoid high exchange fees. Do you suggest doing this in Colombia? I would love to see more videos of you driving around the city. What you showed I liked. It is very green. I am really sick of Las Vegas and its dirt. This is a really ugly city.

Hello. In your opinion what is the best hospital in medellin? If you or girlfriend had a medical emergency which hospital would you want to be in. Right now the game plan is to retire in the medellin area in 6 to 10 years and looking to live about 30 to 40 min outside the city. Was very curious about the health care quality in that city. Locals say its very good and gave me name of 1 hospital called I belive clinic of the America's. Mil gracias

If you're looking outside the city, then the hospital in Rionegro is outstanding. I started a medical tourism site just before the pandemic (great timing, right) and researched the hospitals. Check out San Vicente (Website)
