Im a Firefighter/Paramedic and I'm a heroin addict (currently in recovery, stopped 4 days ago). I originally started using hydrocodone because of a back injury and then It all started from there... I stopped getting relief from the pills, so I moved to Heroin. Then started "using" because of the stresses of my job. I didn't need to take it, but when I got off shift, I used it to relax and then go to sleep. I eventually got hooked... Addiction doesn't discriminate.

Hello Kelly. Thank you for sharing your story. I am happy that you opened up to your husband about your problem. Your on-going shoulder pain will test your resolve not to use, but you have made the right choice. Use those alternative pain management methods to heal yourself. Keep on fighting the good fight to get yourself over this hump. We believe in you and you have great support within the Calm Support/FFH family. Great input Ryan. My family was totally blindsided by my use. I agree with some of the comments on here stating that those around who haven't dealt with drug addiction have a difficult time catching on; even with the physical symptoms manifesting in front of their eyes. Besides, us drug addicts are master manipulators. It's not until we come clean or are caught that things begin to make sense to those closest to us. Dr. Drew, god bless his heart, is a bit out of touch. Your experience with this evil gives you insight they can't learn from their books, Ryan. You are far more knowledgeable than they appear to be on paper.

I myself AM on prescription opioids and some family members of mine think that I'm potentially an addict. As stupid and crazy as this may sound, I really do wish that I could be an addict. Unfortunately however, my body is DEPENDENT (which I may add IS NOT the same as addiction) on opioids which is being used for the treatment for a type of chronic pain disorder called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) of which is a type of chronic pain disorder that is known for being degenerative (being it gets worse over time UNLESS CAUGHT IN THE EARLY DAYS OF which is only about 15 to 20 days) and I have another chronic degenerative pain condition called Allydonia (by definition is pain that caused by stimuli THAT SHOULD NOT CAUSE PAIN. On the other hand though, I take my meds (all of them) EXACTLY how they are prescribed. At this point in time for opioid prescription writing I am in the class called "palliative care" as my conditions are known to get worse and worse.

Its probably more like one out of every five people that are using that stuff. I have to man my shoulders are a mess and just had a reverse total shoulder replacement and have an MRI scheduled to do the left one snd I have crawled up in some nurses rear ends when they’re were blatantly careless. I had a nurse wait over an hour and a half late 24 hours after that surgery. I was not happy due to the nerve block wearing off and her going almost two hours late and it was torture. Its evil stuff but needed when having joint replacements its not a lot of fun.

Abusing or using as intended? Anyone ever hear a Rush Limbaugh radio show during his abuse period, think, could you tell those rants were opiate fueled? I am amazed at how many other drugs (like muscle relaxers, benzos, gabapentin, or course antidepressants) were so freely offered to me after I stopped opiates. The issue (the injury) was still there so we had to try other ways to control pain. For me it was fusion surgery,a fusion surgery that went bad that started it all. My neck surgery resulted in osteomyelitis (an infection of the bones, for me from staph aureus). The osteomyelitis while a lifelong infection is under control (I will be on antibiotics for the rest of my life) it was the surgical debridements that have ruined my life. A debridement is where infected or suspected infected skin, muscle, bone, tendons are cut away. A bit like an amputation. If the surgeon thinks it could be infected, they cut it out.

Justin Jordan everyone is different BUT I was on heroine after that episode then onto methadone, then I reduced super fast 💨 ( in withdrawals the whole time reducing bloody night mare ) then off it n straight into the worst hell 24/7 withdrawals that lasted 7/8 weeks of torture, after that I still had the runs super weak n still freezing cold, n still major sleep problems, it took months for those symptoms to lesson n disappear n sleep came good, now I’m 16 months clean, not everyone has the same withdrawals severity, I was stuck on methadone prison for 20 years because I was afraid 😧 of the withdrawals n if your on methadone, don’t reduce like I did , slow as possible

It's different for everyone. I tapered off methadone very fast and ended up relapsing because the sickness was so awful. I tried again and the second time around I went slooooow. It has a long shelf life in your body so u need to listen to your body and what it's going through. Dont be in a rush and dont compare yourself to other people and what dose they're on. I know u posted this months ago, but I hope it helps and hope u are doing well!

I dont demonize it like everyone else does although I do feel that my time with it has been coming to an end for some time now so ive been slowly coming down from 100 mg a day. Wish me luck guys ive been clean ever since I started methadone

I think if you’re an opiate user, you can usually tell when someone is using. Like how drug users can tell who else is using drugs and what kind. But if you’ve never had any experience with it, you probably can’t tell. I can’t count how many times I’ve been told (even by experienced users) “I would’ve never guessed you used”. I even would get asked when I picked up “is this for you?” lol. I live with my family and used for a year before they found out. I could’ve prob used for way longer without anyone finding out but one day they cleaned my room without my permission and found my paraphernalia. Otherwise, they had no clue. My friend that I was using with was like “how do they not know? You have track marks and don’t even cover them up” but he was an experienced user and my fam had never encountered opiate addiction or any addiction for that matter. But imo usually a tell tale sign of if someone is using is if they don’t have any veins.

Mern Iez in my (and the majority of people’s) experience, most heroin users DO use needles (that’s why heroin is basically synonymous with needles) and only resort to the foot when all the easier veins have failed. Not sure what kind of users you know or are you talking about pill addicts?
