If by chance you play Minecraft and would like to play survival with me in a style similar to hermitcraft hop in this Discord: discord.gg/t6qhTsT Its a 7 year old Hermitcraft style server without any resets. So the same world for the last 7 years. If you don't play Minecraft that's perfectly fine too! Thanks for watching.

@@SilkenLuna I’d say plug and play is better used when you talk about accessories like mice, keyboard and headphones/microphones etc in the way you don’t have to install any drivers or software just to make it work. Doesn’t really matter if the hardware inside the pc is hot swappable or not, it will probably still need the proper drivers and software to get the most out of it.

In 1997 I had built an AMD K6 system. I had wired the fans to turn off while in sleep mode. I was showing someone my build and thought it was off. I removed the K6 CPU while it was asleep to show it off. I put it back in the socket and suddenly felt heat waves rising from the heat sink. Turns out that the CPU went full throttle when I inserted it but the rest of the system was asleep, including the fans. I pulled the power cord fast enough, but it made the adrenaline rush!

Fun fact: PCI Express is actually desgined to be hotswappable. The first lane that makes contact is 1 and the last 16 and when you take it out, lane 16 will be the first to be disconnected, BUT most operating systems don't even support hotswapping. With certain hardware you can upgrade basically anything while the system is running, but those are something like supercomputers or datacenters and not stuff that the average person can get or even afford.

Servers actually support hotplugging PCIe devices. While consumer PCs don't, it probably wouldn't do anything bad to either component as long as you're not in the middle of flashing your GPUs BIOS or something. The part that would go haywire is the software as theyre usually not designed to handle a PCIe device suddenly going missing

Quick tip. This method is called hotswap. If the pc supports it it won't crash or turn off. And most good servers like Google for example have this function. in case a hard drive or ram on a server dies you can just quickly remove the dead component and install a new one without turning the unit off. So if you are planning on creating a good website or game server. Make sure you get parts that support hotswap

According to my experience, when you unplugg the SSD while idle, it's completely fine. But if you unplugg/turn off while doing something like disc checking, writing, or something like that, there is a high risk of the SSD getting corrupt. I've ever tried to partition an ssd, and because it takes long, I turned it off, thinking that it would be up and running fine like a Hard Drive. But then the entire boot sector had gone completely corrupted. Fortunatley, I could still recover some data.

I once had a weird quirk with a laptop's hard drive in which if a device was drawing a lot of power from USB, the internal hard drive would end up malfunctioning and render itself inoperable until the next power cycle. Whenever that happens while I'm in Windows XP, it blue screens shortly after the hard disk starts malfunctioning, if it didn't restart prior to the BSOD due to insufficient power.

Try standby and hibernate upgrades. Long ago I worked at an IT shop and we had a case where a hardware upgrade was causing a boot failure but we were able to get around it by booting, going into hibernate, installing the hardware, resuming, telling XP to find new hardware and then pointing the installer at the driver disk. So, as insane as it sounds, I actually had a case where I had to do an on(ish) hardware install.

If you are wondering: when you booted into windows at 5:00 and got the disk check stuff that probably happened because you force shut off the machine multiple times. It was most likely due to the improper shutdowns so you can replicate the same behavior by forcing shut down multiple times and there you go you will get the same disk check screen at bootup.

I believe the reason there was still graphics after the CPU was slightly out is actually because the frame buffer(VRAM) still had data and the GPU hardware was still running and outputing, just the same frame over and over, and then when you pulled out the CPU all the way the bracket fell and shorted the SMD components on the back of the GPU core and caused it to shut off, coincidentally right when the CPU was removed. I don't think the CPU was doing anything once you lifted the tension bar onward, only the GPU

Well, i guess if you like switched the CPU WITHOUT shorting the data lanes on the GPU and while the CPU clock signal was being low, you could actually manage to freeze the PC and start it back up from the point it was on before just by putting the CPU back in. Edit: Tried that with an Apple ][ and it worked. Wouldn't recommend doing this on more modern systems though. It could cause data corruption.

I 100% agree on the drives... I recommend not even pulling 'hotswap' drives whilst powered up, I've had (IIRC) 3 die on me in the last decade (or so)... thankfully only one (the first one) was mine, the rest I was just doing what I was told (despite my "I told you so" objections).

I know that this video was probably intended to be a joke, but for the curious ones, while desktop PCs don't really like you hot-swapping parts (although some Linux distros might actually allow that, as PCI-E is technically designed to support hot-swapping), servers and especially IBM mainframes actually can handle it much better. Hot-swapping drives is commonplace on servers (usually in redundant RAID arrays), and in the case of IBM's z/OS you can hot-swap pretty much anything - including the CPU - and the machine will continue to work as if nothing bad had happened. Just goes to show that we can actually build systems so redundant that no single broken component can truly take them down.

SATA drives can recover from being unplugged if you plug them back in soon enough. Once the Windows cursor started stuttering, I knew it was too late. But I've actually done it myself and the computer recovered itself without a reboot.

Some stuff (like SATA) is actually meant to be hot-swappable, IIRC. It’s not something I’ve done, but remember it not being implemented fully. Same with PCI-E but these features don’t seem to be generally available on a random desktop mobo.

Note, some server grade motherboard allow for hotswapable pci components like SAS and NIC cards. It has to be supported on the motherboard, expansion card, OS and I believe the cpu as well. So hot swapping pci components is not unheard-of!

1:49 you have technically reached a windows crash dump screen, but as there is no addressable volatile memory for the internal graphics-allocated VRAM in RAM to display the crash dump screen, you have a system hang instead of a crash, with the GPU framebuffer displaying the last contents it has.
