I saw a salt spreader and the cost at lowes and immediately came to KZfaq to see if I could use my seed spreader and you didn't disappoint. Thanks man!

Another great video! I had an older lawn and garden spreader I modified for salt. I added another hair pin going the opposite direction from the other on the agitator. Helped to evenly distribute whatever I was trying to spread.

Great video! I have the 50# Spyker spreader and was wandering how it would do. I'm adding snow removal and salting this season. Thank you

A spreader and snow shovel is all I use for my winter cleanups. Can be hard work sometimes but low overhead, good profit 🙌.

You're young and tough, here in northern Michigan we get pure ice maybe 1/2 to 2 inches thick with as much as 13 inches of greasy wet snow on top. Foot gear made for ice is worthless. I fell this year and our phone service wasn't working so I laid for a long time in the snow until I finally was able to roll to a tree to get up on my feet. In our area one needs a garden tractor with chains on the wheels and a pull behind spreader. I'm 75 years old and winters didn't used to be like this. But with the global warming we now get a lot more ice. I'll take snow any day over ice.

Thanks so much for doing this demonstration! I've been looking all over youtube for a vid on this. Do you think it would be able to spread sand or salt-sand mix? I'm going to grab the 175lbs tow behind Brinly-Hardy spreader for salting my yard and hope to have similar results :) thanks so much big guy.

If you put a screen in there it will keep the weight off the auger. It will then spread easier

so i got a Chapin 8003 and it wasnt working too well / jamming, but i think its because i was using sand/salt mix from my town, the sand i think doesnt flow well as opposed to just rock salt or ice melt pellets

I find this experiment timely & interesting while great majority of professional winter services instruct their crews to spread salt manually by hand and are rarely Seen using salt Spreading equipment When doing Private and public walks. I have Always Been Meaning to do This experiment. Which way you went About it and Covered subject in Video was outstanding. It's pretty Obvious I should be wearing A straight jacket And muzzle When Discussing this Subject with Others. Anyways... After first Widespread use by Michigan State highway division back in the 1950s. Most salt still supplied by Michigan mines today. Why Morton salt opened its distribution operation in Chicago more than a century ago. Before That, Michigan's Mountainous glacial beach Sand dunes supplied many state And local Highway Departments. I don't know if it's because road salt is cheaper than dirt that its becoming So Overused. States have Been registering Exponentially Increasing salt levels Entering our natural Waterways. But my man you are about one of the very few landscape services I ever came across spreading amounts closer to the responsible side. Than great number of mainstream groundskeepers who more like dump the s***, than spread it. After I've been steadily witnessing increasing All season services only arriving on the scene within last 10 years. Come spring they will break out and dust off Seed & fertilization spreaders. And Do it One more Time In The fall. Knowing This equipment can be Adjusted to block salt overspread Otherwise getting into Grass, is another huge Plus. Shoveling Might become a Past time, just salt heavy and return Less often?!? Sure, side on caution Rather than slip and sue. I mean so caked on Heavy, people have slipped on the Salt! How does that Old saying Go? Salt The Earth. Which is even more ironic how normally public takes for granted crews responsible for upkeep of lawns and living landscapes. Now becoming Same Businesses selling hardscape installations. Are those knowledgeable experts Keenly Aware how caustic salt melts cause greatest unnecessary damage. Resulting in drastically Shortening both life of landscape trees plants and service life cement brick Pavers wooden decks decorative Metal accoutrements expected to Provide. Thus Public puts Faith and trust in Those who should And do know Better. While same time These fellow peers claim its never been their job to Educate customers who need To research subject themselves or Its their fault not ours. Yet Talk With Professional concrete Manufacturers growing Up In the 2000 Year old Family business Actually delivering Ready-made adhesive Cement mixed concrete since great grandparents immigrated From Old Rome. Stating How Five large bits Of Rock salt spread out every few inches proven Plenty Enough To melt Ice. (Of course consideration for Temperature Wind Further Precipitation etc) Exchanging concrete for Petroleum mixed bitumen or asphalt faces Potholes. And painting cracks in filled with tar prevents Freeze thaw Damage. Did you know First year after Cement poured, to allow for curing no salt can be used. Ever see scattered pot marks Marring Up cement under 10 years old? I think that could be one cause. What Do You'all think? Has anyone seen This down south where salt Not used??

I go lighter where people park because you have the heat of the parked car to help with melting. I hit walking paths heavier in the parking lot

Good luck with that. Tried that last year what a mess. Clogs up constantly, throws salt WAY too far, doesn't hold more than 50lbs salt.. which isn't jack when it comes to winter.. trust me there's a reason they have dedicated salt spreaders.

Actually, with our sidewalk salt, it works phenomenal. If you use the same so you put on lots, it doesn’t work very well. Sheesh, tough crowd.
