Everyone knows the Rolex submariner was developed as a tool watch. But has it become a luxury item at the point where you cannot wear it as a beater?

You’re not one bit crazy ! “If it’s worth buying, then it’s worth wearing “. Rolex SS sports models are the ideal everyday beater watch, much better that , than it sitting in a safe.

I bought my Submariner in 1989 and wore it to work everyday for about 20 years. I was a police officer and the Sub and I were in more scuffles/incidents than I care to remember…..and the watch worked flawlessly. It’s a tank. It wasn’t until I was involved in a major off duty traffic collision that the watch got severely damaged. I sent it to Rolex for repair. They replaced the bracelet, bezel and a few other parts and it went right back on my wrist. I still have that watch….34years later..still works flawlessly. I don’t wear it as much now as I have several other watches, but I still love it!

I wear my Sub in industrial furnaces, boilers, all kinds of nasty crappy places. Use it when off roading with my side by side, it never leaves my wrist. It's scratched up and worn in, each one has a story. Could not care less what it does to the value.

Love this video. I finally decided to wear my Sub daily for work. Which by the way sat at my AD for 2 weeks this past December unsold until I got it. I racked my brain on wether to wear it at my job daily or not. I’m a UPS driver. It was a big purchase for me but also something I’ve wanted for half my life. I’ll wear mine and enjoy it and make memories and then pass it on to my daughter someday. I won’t call it a beater because I will do my best to take care of it but yes it will see everyday life right along side me.

I am a retired 20 year disabled Air Force veteran that suffers from PTSD and I recently was able to purchase a 1978 (birth year) Air King which I saved for a long time and was able to buy it for 3k being it has ties to the Air Force and my birth year. My dream watch is a submariner. If I were to get a submariner I would never take it off, literally. I’d sleep in it, shower in it and I would post about it every day and write about my daily doings with it and it’s durability and daily pics. I would do this for 6 months straight, that’s how bad I want one.

I've been wearing my 2018 Omega Seamaster Professional Master Chronometer (black face version of yours) every single day, as a true beater, since December 2018; just as you're proposing. It replaced my Seiko kinetic Tuna air diver. I have not babied it! All I can say is: DO IT!!! The watches are TOUGH. They can take it. Other than a few minor scuffs, my Omega looks great. I say wear it and report back in six months. The joy I receive from constantly looking down at my wrist FAR outweighs any minor scratches I've incurred.

I’m in NJ. I wanted a submariner, so I went to the AD and was basically laughed at when I asked about the sub. So I went in the Rolex forums and read how people can get moved up the “list” by making purchases and establishing a relationship. So in July I went back to that AD and purchased a Milgauss. Then in December I bought diamond earrings for my mom. Then in April I bought a DJ41. I asked my AD about the Sub and they said it would be at least a year waiting. At this point, I had two watches that didn’t really sing to me, so I sold them, and bought a Sub with a full kit, and stickers, that was only one month old for 8200. Screw the ADs. Now I have the watch I want, and don’t need to bother with them at all. Never dealing with that again. Unless I can walk in and out with a watch. It’s total BS.

Hi Marc. I tried to explain to my wife this morning the concept of a “beater’ watch. She thought that I said Beta and subsequently recited the entire Ancient Greek alphabet (trouble with living with someone who is far more educated and intelligent than yourself, and someone who has no interest in watches - I am working on that one). Secondly, enjoy the Sub. Life is short, I don’t have kids but tell me nephews and nieces (who want my watches - now!!), that every scratch or scar that we pick up is an experience, makes our character and a logs a memory (good or bad). Don’t baby it, love it, enjoy it and let it be an aid to the memories of your life 👍

Aw Marc, you're taking me back to when I was 13 or 14 . Back in the late 1980s, I so vividly remember looking through the window of my most local Rolex AD while my late mother was window shopping the jewellery. They had it all there in the window back then, GMTs, Subs...literally everything was RIGHT THERE begging for a buyer...! Last time I was in that same AD they told me they closed the waitlists for Subs and Sea Dwellers when it reached over two years. (I'm on the Sea Dw. list at another AD, as it happens.) As for using any Rolex watch as a "beater"....just wow... For me that's right up there with using a Gucci silk scarf to polish your freaking shoes! If you're doing some rough stuff, maybe wear a G-Shock man!

3 year waiting list for one of these at my AD in the UK. Insane or what? 5 years for a Hulk. I don't even like the maxi case. For an every day beat me up I'd rather wear a Seiko SKX. Totally dependable, totally expendable, but somehow so endearing, and a small fraction of the cost on a Sub.

I live in a small college town and we have a Rolex AD. I walked in the store for the first time ever and asked for a Submariner. They didn't have one right then but about 10 days later they called me and I picked it up! So, the key is: small town AD! @@carlosr1060 you do realize military personal around the world wore Rolexes in the field right? My granddad wore a sub 1680 in the field in Vietnam and wore his 16750 GMT and 116610 Sub in every situation until he died. He said Rolex’s are tool watches, not “Rich boy toys” as he put it. Watches like Breitling, Rolex, Omega, Heuer, IWC and Tudor built watches back in the 60’s to the 80’s that meant to serve purpose. Divers, chronographs and aviator watches were made to do something other than be bling. Theses watches didn’t start becoming increased in value and seen as investments until the 2000’s where stockbrokers on Wall Street needed something else to establish a market in. AD’s weren’t the only places where you could buy these watches and had to sit on a damn wait list with a down payment to own one of these watches. My grandfather bought his GMT from a mom and pop jewelry store in 1983. For the Sub he had to wait two months on a list with a 20% down payment from a AD that didn’t treat him with respect because he was dressed in a flannel and jeans to obtain that watch, a process he said he’d never go through again.

There's an unexplainable feeling of freedom and lightness once you break this psychological wall, strap your favourite watch on and go live life with whatever it throws at you along with it. Maybe its one of the best examples that we should own things, and not the opposite. And it's not even ownership at last, since one day you'll be packing up and leaving for good. It's an interesting subject on what would be the daily knock about Rolex. When I indicated to my wife I need a knock about Rolex she was in complete disbelief. I am also considering purchasing a submariner for this exact reason. I do feel a little cautions wearing my Batman and the thought of me scratching up my current factory condition GMT. I have been experimented using T cut on other watches that have become scratched and it works wonders taking out light scratches . Only use on high polished metal though as T cut can take a brushed finish back to mirror finish steel.

Rolex is definitely a TOOL WATCH!!! It’s meant to be worn and enjoyed everyday. Unfortunately, most of Rolex owners these days are too worried about scratches and dents that they forget the true meaning of owning a Rolex. I have 4 Rolexes and the GMT 116710LN is my everyday watch. I don’t like to call it a BEATER, I call it a companion watch. The watch has a few scratches, 1 dent on the lug and I’m ok with that. I enjoy it wearing everyday and makes me smile every time I check the time. Life is too short to be worrying about scratches and dents. Cheers..

I wear my Rolex doing most things, even workout with it and it doesn't skip a beat. I don't understand the point in buying a Sub and treating it like a dress watch. Rolex gives you robustness and reliability like no other company. If that doesn't matter to someone buying the watch, then they are just paying for the brand name. For Rolex money, you can get a beautifully finished movement and an elegant watch that is meant to be more delicately cared for. Reminds me of people who buy cars that are highly capable and then drive it like a Prius.

And she said that they have one non date ceramic submariner. They ddnt even display it yet. On the same day i drove right away to her store and got my first rolex! Iam super in love with my watch! This will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Nice. Thanks for the video. I was very lucky walked into AD he had a sub no date in the back that had just arrived. Sold it to me on the spot. September 2018. Love my watch. Babying for now. I have a 2003 seamaster as my beater. I can see my Rolex taking its place.

I ordered my black/black sub end December 2017 and got the call to say it's arrived at the end of March which was quicker than I'd expected. I wear it pretty much every day so it's picked up a few marks on the clasp but you'd have to look. This watch is well screwed together so it should last me the rest of my life 😀

Got the exact watch from a UK AD few weeks ago after a 4 month wait, no purchase history. Also Marc, I'm considering adding a 2005 16600 Sea Dweller to my collection. How do you think it wears in comparison to the SubC? Im worried it might be too thick / top-heavy, as i feel the SubC is pretty much perfect. FYI my wrist is 6.75inches and pretty flat. Cheers!

Hi there Marc. Just wondering do you recon I should buy a Rolex Submariner new (stickers) from 2018. Or should I buy the new Datejust in 36mm from an Ad? I do own the oyster perpetual 39mm with a white dial. It’s just I’m looking at an investment piece, as I think in 2020 the subs are gonna get updated.

My grandfather wore a GMT 16750 Pepsi and a Sub 116610 which went to me. That man wore both in any situation he could think of, he was a vet in Vietnam where he wore a Sub 1680 over there where he saw Rolex’s as a tool watch, not a luxury watch. He was disappointed that Rolex had turned into what he called “Rich boy toys” instead of tool watches like they were intended to originally be. They were watches that were given purposes to serve in the elements of the world. Not meant to be locked in a safe forever. Outside of instances where I know that I can actually hurt the watch out of lack of common sense I wear my Sub almost anywhere.

Marc I got a question for you. I own a Rolex OP39 114300, got it new from the AD about 6 months ago and been wearing it every single day since. Do you think it needs any days off to let the movement stop and wind down at all or it’s fine to keep it going nonstop?

For what it’s worth, no less a figure than Roger Smith tells the following story about his first Rolex....He treasured it so much that he seldom wore it..As he began the long journey to becoming the extraordinary watch maker he is today, he was forced to sell it. He always regretted that he rarely enjoyed the watch.Believe his wife bought him another Rolex for his fortieth birthday. It’s now his daily wearer. (No accounting for taste I suppose.lol.)

Got mine on the spot in Aruba, but I sort of implied I was also going to purchase 2 yellow gold President models as well. 2 days earlier at a different location of the same AD I was told they had none in stock...which was pure BS.

Marc do you have tips to prevent hairline scratches on an Oyster Bracelet with polished centerlinks? I only had my Datejust 41 for 2 weeks and the polished centerlinks and clasp already have hairline scratches without really bumping into anything. I guess I should have went with the sub as a daily beater since it's bracelet is all brushed

It is okay to wear the Submariner like it's meant to be. I currently own 116610LN and 116610LV and I've never worried about a scratch. I sold my 5167A because I was not man enough to scratch it, and if you're not brave enough to scratch them, you'll never enjoy them! And the way you talked how you want your kids to look at your subby and think of what you've been through with the watch, man that is really touching! Btw you are one of my fav watch guys, cheers from Jakarta!

Dec of last year I went to get a gift for my girl, my local AD is next to the store where I was getting the gift. Well , my guy at the AD, who I have purchased several Rolexes from him saw me passing by and told me he had a Sub available and asked me to see if some of my friends wanted it. Long story short, I ended up buying it just because I know the availability is limited. I have wear it maybe 4 times ever since. My next one will be the Rose Gold Daytona with the chocolate face. I think it could be a daily watch

This is exactly why I'm going pre-ceramic; you can beat 'em up but they will always look like the iconic diver. Ceramic subs probably won't age well; they'll just look damaged, so you'd be having it repaired all the time.

I became a fan of the Rolex Submariner when I first saw Sean Connery wear one in 1965. I was 8 years old. I have worn one since the 1970’s, and have several at this point. The reason I have several is exactly related to this topic. The values of the one I would be wearing shoots up, so I get a less valuable one to save the more valuable one. An example is in the early 1990’s, when I bought a 1965 5513, when my 1680 became really valuable. The 5513 was only $2000. No one imagined it might become valuable, because the 5513 was made for 3 decades. Another is when I replaced my birth year sub with the 1680, because I wanted to preserve my 1957 sub. And on and on, it goes.

I wear my 2016 Ceramic Sub no date on weekends. I wear a range of slightly more discrete Rolex to the office - a DateJust, An Oyster Perpetual, a couple of Air Kings (1952 and 2008) etc. I give my Sub a hard time. I don’t like it enough to baby it. I wore a GMT for 25 years before I replaced it with an Explorer 2. I loved that watch and yet I gave it hell. It was on my arm though my army career, it had car crashes and bar fights with me. It never let me down and when I had it serviced after 15 years it can back like new. My Sub is there to work for a living. I make it work.
