How to glide a Mercedes while the engine is turned off, where you waste zero gas and zero money! Can your car glide? I'm driving over 80 mph, and my RPM is 0! This means my vehicle's engine is turned off completely! I'm driving at high speed while my car is totally turned off. I'm wasting zero gas right now! Crazy!
On older cars, it used to be very easy. The car used to be just a big piece of metal, with 4 wheels underneath and the stick shift in the middle. So it used to be possible, especially when you go downhill.
But nowadays, if you turn off your car while driving - you will be in the world of trouble. You would immediately lose your power steering, power brakes, transmission, and all your computers will be gone. You would lose control of your car in a few seconds. No matter what you do, DO NOT turn off your car while driving!
Fortunately, right now, some cars offer you the ability to glide... without turning the vehicle off...

Wow!! I am a new subscriber from your latest videos... Now this is awesome video I have to watch this one back.. I have the glide in mine? 2021 GLS 450 Matic? if so this is great!! But have to watch it back a few times! Gas is high now only using premium 97 octane.. I am part of the American Eagle Foundation and watch eagle cams all the time during nesting season that started here in Florida!! Amazing footage of the eagle with the fish!! Just loving that!! Gliding mode works only when both the accelerator and brakes are released, but the Cruise Control usually uses accelerator and transmission constantly. So, Gliding will not work while using the Cruise Control, except maybe some models equipped with a top-of-the-line Driver Assist Package that can control your car without accelerator.

Gliding will not work with Cruise Control, because it uses the accelerator. You have to let go of both Gas and Brake pedals in Eco Mode.

I learned to drive in old cars with no power steering & assisted brakes. If we came home very late we would switch off the engine some distance from home and coast / glide to a stop so we wouldn't wake up our parents, or wife. . I tried this in the first vehicle I had with power assistance, a Landrover 110 Defender with the V8 3.5 Block. I turned off the key and nearly smashed down my own garden fence at the bottom of the road . I was stood on the brake and needed my full strength to steer. Very unnerving. Never ever again will I try this :)

Yeah, on modern cars, if you switch the engine off... you pretty much lose the control of the car.

Hello it is good information previous model ml 350 2006 I have seen videos where from the key they move the transmission oil there is somethig that does not finish closing me .how long the timing chain last and its there is secret component since the key is used to lubricante balance craft apart from changing them osften oil and filter to proctec the chain from time engine is at masterpiese

Can you do another video to show us how to use the rear seat entertainment system that is located on the back of the headrests of the GLE? How can it show what’s playing in the dvd player in the front dash and/or what’s playing in the dvd player in the back,located below the rear temperature and fan controls?

I have future plans. But the rear entertainment system is usually controlled by rear passengers using the remote control, and rear passengers use their own headsets - not to interfere with the driver.

No, it started from 2017 model, if I'm not mistaken. You have to have Dynamic Select function for the Gliding to work.

2017 GLC 43 "AMG" - glide mode (cute little blue sailboat icon appears) leaves the engine idling at about 500 or 600 rpm. It doesn't go to zero rpm, presumably because the Stop-Start system uses a semi-normal starter motor, not the integrated SMG approach. Disclaimer - this comment contains some speculation.

Yes, as I explained in this video, The engine will switch off completely only on models equipped with the newest 48V EQ Boost models, so the battery can handle the load single-handedly. Other Mercedes models will switch to the Neutral while gliding, also saving a lot of gas but not "0." The engine will be still on.

That is correct, except you have to take your foot off both the accelerator and brake pedals. As long as you engage Eco mode, it will work automatically. If you use it properly, you can save about 30 to 40% of fuel consumption!

@@MBZMaster does it only work like this for Hybrid? My W205 only goes into D (Glide Mode) for a while until it changes gear ⚙. Due to the fact yours is EQ it makes sense your engine will shut off completely but my Auto Petrol engine will just cut fuel supply and glide until it requires another gear change down. The only way I can seem to keep this working a little longer than 15 to 20 seconds is down a slight incline on the Motorway 🛣 with speed limiter on and my foot down. Glide mode seems pointless for non Hybrids.

@@ChaseEverything Yes it has EQ technology, but it's not hybrid. On your car, the gliding mode puts your car into a neutral position, which still saves some gas, but it doesn't shut off the engine completely, so it's not going to be a 0 mpg.

@@MBZMaster Is there a way to force Glide mode? Only way I can manage to do it is rolling down an slight incline at the right speed and accelerate to brake a little bit and leave speed limiter on but there should be another way as this doesn't always work.

It should. However, as I explained in this video, it works a little different on your model because it's not 48V electrified as a model in the video. The Gliding in your model just switches the transmission into the N position while gliding. It saves you a lot of gas as well, but doesn't turn off the engine completely, so it's not a total 0. Try to go into E, accelerate and release both accelerator and brakes, and then see if your D sign changed to a green color.

This is not a feature, this happens on almost every car... it's just a common sense.if you accelerate to hard with the gliding you might end up using more fuel and save nothing.

*I did a 301 Mile journey in the UK today, (2019 W247 B200CDi AMG) in Eco Mode and 'Coasted' (Freewheeled) 92 Miles. Av MPG 74.3 mpg with full Auto Air con on [very hot day] Engine doesn't stop but goes into tick over.*

It may be a problem with your brakes, calipers or discs. Check them out. Also check both batteries in your car.

I'm not sure about Diesel variant because it's not available in the U.S. Is your car equipped with Eco Stop and Go? Does it have 48 Volt EQ mode? When you release the accelerator and don't use the brakes, is your transmission light changes to a "D" without the number in a different color, as I showed in the video?

You can try it in Eco Mode, as I showed in the video, and see if it works. However, on the non 48V models, the Glide Mode will switch the transmission in Neutral mode (which will also save a lot of gas), but the engine will not turn off completely.

My A180 SE ( 2019 ) doesn't have the "Gliding option" ? I switched to Eco Mode , and releasing the acceleration pedal didn't make any difference. On the MBUX cluster the gears stayed the same without to switch on neutral. 🤷‍♂

That model wasn't available in the U.S., so I don't know, but it should have it. It doesn't switch to N. It just activates the Gliding Mode. Release both brakes and accelerator on the straight road (not downhill).

After I wrote the question for you, I drove my car and when I released the acceleration pedal I noticed on the dashboard the gear's symbol changed from D7 or 6,5,4, etc to D only , what means the gearbox disengaged and switched to gliding mode. It works on my E Class 220 D 2017 model. W213. I have to put it in eco mode. My car used to coast for longer distances giving me 78 mpgs not kidding you but recently since it came back from Mercedes service, it rarely crosses 55 mpgs. Despite being in eco and coasting through gliding mode, my car starts slowing down even on slopes. I am not sure what the hell is going on. I am getting my wheels aligned to see if thats causing any issues.

I've noticed that when I cease pressing the accelerator pedal on the highway, my E300 will glide for awhile but I've never noticed the Tachometer going to zero. Very cool! Tachometer goes to zero only on the latest 48V models with EQ Boost. Other models just go into the Neutral, which also saves gas, but the engine is still running using some gas.

It's available on many MB models over the past 10 years. However, if the model is 48V electrified, as the one in this video, the Gliding turns the engine off completely. If it's not, then it disengages the engine and saves a lot of gas, but the engine still works, so it still consumes gas, just a lot less. The best way to see if the Gliding works in your car is to repeat all the steps I showed in this video when the engine is warm, and see if letter D changes the color. Then you know you have it.

That model doesn't have 48V electrification, but still should have the "Gliding Mode." Make sure to switch the Dynamic Select to "E" - economy mode.

@@mustafaalsultan1464 If you change the aspect ratio of the tire, your speedometer and odometer will not show the correct speed/mileage data. Which will result in your computer calculating wrong numbers for ABS, Navi, etc. Plus you won't see the correct speed you're driving. So, if you change, make sure to do a full recalibration. But, if you change also, the rim, so you can keep the same height of the wheel, then everything will work fine.

This is not a feature, even my first car Ford focus glide.. it's common sense, every car does it . Once you accelerate hard and leave a car without pressing the throttle the car consumes less fuels as if it's idling.

I have a B 180 d 2016 Mercedes. While I am driving in eco mode, sometime the information in instrument cluster disappear. I press the right/left arrow from stirring wheel and information is back. Is it normal to disappear?

I used confort mode only last 5 days and no data disappear from instrument cluster. Before learning about gilding from MBZ, I used the others driving mode too, and never happen any data to disappear from instrument cluster. Except missing those data nothing else happen, the car moving normal and gliding too. Is something wrong with my car when data disappear from instrument cluste?

If it only happens in Eco mode, then it should be Ok. Maybe the car is reducing an electric output, increasing savings of gas. B180d model wasn't available in the U.S., so I can't say for sure. Ask your local MB dealership to confirm.

No, Gliding requires ECO mode of the Dynamic Select feature, which wasn't available until the next body style of S-Class.

The car has to be warmed up. Try to do it on the straight road, not an incline, and see if the transmission's letter D changes color.

2017 GLC 43 "AMG" with the low end non-Comand 7-inch screen. Once or twice I got the entertainment system connected to my phone's data connection, using Bluetooth data sharing. Even had BBC News webpage appearing on the car's screen. Also navigated to see some random weather from random locations. Nearly useless. Then it connected to Mercedes, downloaded an update, and now it doesn't offer that feature anymore. No loss, it barely worked anyway. Cheers !

Thank you, I've used your channel and info when purchasing my new ML, my next challenge is completing the B Service, I purchased the until to pull a trailer across Canada and my B service indicator came on mid trip, I'm trying to get all the correct parts for the cabin filters, pre filter, left and right engine filters as well as the oil filter.... This will be the first attempt at completing this service on my own, the dealer wants almost $1000 CAD to complete.... Can you assist with these parts, I love your videos and have used your tips on other Mercedes features, I love the vehicle ....it towed over 6000lbs across Canada without issue and reasonable fuel economy..now I must show it some love with this service!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don't have any specific place in Canada, but there are tons of online stores selling original MB parts. Just search Google for a few minutes for OEM MB parts and you should find a good selection.

I tried using Mercedes WiFi on my GLC when it was new back in 2018 and discovered it's totally useless. Connecting to it doesn't provide any features whatsoever not even as a hotspot. Watched your wifi video which was good for more recent models that work as I had expected but it doesn't address older models.

Older models used slower Wi-Fi and it wasn't very useful, but the new models offer very fast connectivity, where you can get your own mobile service.

"Don't turn off your car while driving." Also, don't remove the key and toss it to your friends in the back seat, as the steering wheel will eventually lock and you'll find yourself headed towards a concrete wall with locked steering and poor brakes. A friend told me about this; certainly not me...

Well... in Los Angeles it's $7 per gallon right now... GLS has about 27 gallons, you do the math on savings...

Dumbest feature I’ve ever heard of. Nobody is going to go 80, die down to 65, go 80 , down to 65 just to save a dollar. Ridiculous

Save a dollar? Here in LA, each gallon of gasoline is closer and over $5 now... Gliding can save anywhere between 20 to 35% of consumption. You do the math. But, you will definitely lose a lot of performance while using the Eco Mode, as I described in the video. So I use it mostly when I'm low on gas.
