First, I really like the addition of LCD displays, it feels much needed for modern intercity trains and I'm glad to see North America catching up. Second, my personal favorite Intercity route is the Amtrak Cascades, and I'm also glad to see that the Cascades is set to recieve Venture cars as well, though I am a bit dissapointed in the early departure of the Talgoes.

The equipment ordered by California and Illinois has never entered service. It has numerous issues from lead in the potable water systems to electrical and structural problems that will probably result in the cars being scrapped. Brightline seems ok with the same but then Brightline is a Florida real estate development scheme with a train attached for ESG reasons. IOW no one gives a n F'. They are the F-35 of the railway world.

@@emilkarpo well then that’s good, as the F-35, after some fairly standard early hiccups, has become a very good plane. That bad publicity it got was mostly because of the cost overruns and the narrative that it was some kind of a failure (which was never really true). Not to mention, venture cars have started to enter service now in Chicago, with lots more coming online in the next few years across the Midwest. I’m not sure what the status of the California ones are, but hopefully they’ll be in service soon as well!

I had the honour and pleasure of attending this VIA Rail preview of their new train consist as well, plus accompanying Reece as his still photographer, note taking, croissant fetcher etc. I must say that the current VIA stock is perfectly fine - the train up had re-upholstered seats which were very comfortable. On the return to Toronto today, we had a car without the redone seats, which were noticeably less comfortable. Nonetheless VIA is in the midst of revamping the existing Corridor fleet's seats, as well as renovating their long distance cars. The new VIA fleet promises much better onboard internet, sockets and USB slots at each seat (doubled in Business Class), wider aisles for easier mobility device movement, and other design features.

@TheJimprez
@TheJimprez 2 жыл бұрын
I can see that for the Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal corridor. But for anything above that distance, I REALLY don't think you'll see much more than the usual tourist experience of a 3 day trip to Vancouver. Air Canada just ordered a LOT of C-Series/A220 planes that change everything. Cheap and efficient 140 passenger planes, able to one-stop it to Vancouver from Montreal. It's going to cost the same as taking a train to go to anywhere out west or east. The ONLY plus I see for this new train and front-rear LOCO arrangement is the fact that Halifax lost its Y and can't turn trains around anymore, so a back and forth thing is clearly a winning idea... AND Greyhound stopped all of their Canadian operations. This means that only trains and planes get you out west if you don't have a car. I used the train often in the last 3 years to go from Quebec City to Montreal and Ottawa. It's NEVER full or even close to when I get on, at regular mid-day times, and it's not looking very profitable at the really low prices I get my tickets at.

Fun Fact: The Siemens Venture cars are heavily based on the Viaggo line, which is in service since the mid 2000s in Europe. It was developed more or less for the Austrian Federal Railway / Österreichische Bundesbahnen, and you can see the similarities in the interior design. That being said, these trainsets done well in Europe, and I'm sure they'll work great in Canada.

@@afcgeo882 Yes. But the reality is that the knowledge on how to build good trains is gone in the US (same like no one in Europe knows how to build a nuclear reactor power plant these days). Even if the trains get manufactured in NA, the IP has to come from somewhere, and pretty much all R&D regarding passenger rail trainsets is done either in Asia or mainland Europe. And since there is not much demand in NA, it's hard to see that some new player enters the market and can survive against Stadler, Siemens, Alstom, ... And all three companies have their proven designs, which they will adapt for the US market, if there is demand.
@user-sm3xq5ob5d
@user-sm3xq5ob5d 2 жыл бұрын
@@afcgeo882 Would be interesting what you would like to see as new or experimental features in passenger cars? I think doing experiments with in service cars has always the risk of failure. And that costs money VIA or AMTRAK for that matter is not ready to spend. In Europe the tendency is to buy run of the mill equipment which is supposed to work without bugs from the start. Which, of course, it never does. But then you can blame the manufacturer and not pay yourself for experiments. I have done miles and miles of train rides until I did retire recently. And I have seen the comfort degrading. Seats could no longer be reclined so much, leg room getting smaller, no foot rests, small folding tables and no more compartments. No to go to the seats being too firm for my liking. So from the first ICE trains in 1991 I consider it a downward journey. The only improvement I saw since then is the availability of free WLAN. And that started only a few years ago.

@@afcgeo882 There is no disadvantage for anyone of having a "20 year old" venture cars. Why? Siemens is always improving design and needs from the customer, especially the requirements are stricter than 20 year before. So VIA Rail will get an updated venture car based on an proven platform. If VIA Rail is ordering silent and comfortable bogie, they will get the state-of-the-art one. Wifi? screen infotainment? strong a/c? No problem. A big plus is: The reliability is already proven. Everything what has to do with maintenance won't be a problem (spare parts, workshop manual...)
@TheJimprez
@TheJimprez 2 жыл бұрын
Can't be worst than the old ones. Although I don't think it's VIA's fault. I've been to Europe and TRAINS are a normal way to travel there. Here, they are NOT! So it's a LOT less profitable and the money for upgrades comes much slower. Everyone has a car, or two here (a beater for winter, and a nice one for the rest of the year), so short inter-city rides don't get the same traction, and it's NOT like London in the UK or Some places like Washington DC, where people come in to work every day from suburbs 60-80 Km away. Maybe a BIT of that in Toronto and Montreal, but that is about it. didn't until I was about 12. Then it was mostly LOTS of buses, cars, or planes. I mean Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world and we all live in a straight line with ONE railroad and ONE Trans-Canada highway... So almost NOBODY rides a train for 2 days to get to the middle part unless they HATE planes or they want the experience at least once. We usually get on a plane and do it in 4 hours or so, Or 7 if it's Vancouver. MAYBE if no other bus services take up the slack, since Greyhound was the ONLY carrier going West from Toronto to Vancouver and its GONE, the trains will get a bit of a push and more long-distance customers.

Amtrak is purchasing the electrified variant of this locomotive. Hopefully that means these could be retrofitted in the future. Once Go corridors on GTA are electrified the Via train could theoretically raise the pantograph for that portion of their travel.

Rail Public Transit in Canadian cities has been on the up and up continuously for the last 2-3 years and the future in the decade + ahead is so bright!! I cannot WAIT to see the implementation of VIA HFR, as well as the mass deployment of rail public transit in cities across Canada! This is a proud moment for us rail fans 😁😁

While I am enthusiastic about Via's new trains, I am afraid nothing will really change until Via has its own tracks. I have spent a lot of time sitting on Via trains on a siding to let a CN or CP freight train go past. Until Via actually has its own tracks and is not at the mercy of CN and CP Via's unacceptably bad on time performance will continue even with the new trains. Maybe I'm wrong. I certainly hope so.

Couple of things I noted: the vents on the sides of the loco really reminded me of the symbol you see on JR trains in Japan for the Green Cars! A problem you find with using push buttons is how some people use the wrong ones. The amount of times people press the emergency button in the toilet on UK trains instead of the flush [or door close/lock] is amazing, despite the fact it is red and has the word "emergency" actually on it. It may be something which gets some additional labelling later on, and as you say there's still things to iron out. It looks a great product, and thanks for a great video to showcase it! I wouldn't be surprised if VIA ends up ordering more coaches to deal with demand.

Why are so many people in this comment section so hateful of this train? No it’s not a 300km/h javelin train or a Shinkansen. It’s a whole lot better then what they are running right now. As a Canadian, I would love for high speed rail to take you around the country, or even electrification or two tracks minimum, but it’s most likely not feasible due to the millions and millions of money that would need to be spent on infrastructure alone. The sad reality is, North America is too car oriented, and people would just complain even more when their taxes go way up to pay for a billion dollar high speed rail project that most likely would only affect Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. I do wish that Canada became more like the UK than the US in terms of rail and transport, but sadly we most likely will never see High Speed National Rail in our country :(

The sad thing is that in the long run its actually the cheaper option too. Just look at the insanity of the 401 and the amount of repairs, lanes and lost revenue because of people stuck in traffic. All of the things mentioned seep money. A metro-like intercity train system between the big cities would already improve so much and would probably make a lot of people a lot less angry. So yes I wholeheartedly agree, its a good train and we can only hope that it paves (or rails hehe) the way for more improvements :D

You know, I'm not a fan of the Siemens aesthetic, such as on US light rail vehicles or Velaro bullet train sets. But they freaking nailed it with these Charger + Venture combos. Honestly the cab cars are my favorite aspect of these trains, and many Amtrak services will eventually get them for the first time which I love. Large windows are sweet (though VIA seems to not have perfect alignment between seating and windows, a pet peeve of mine and something Siemens advertises in their Venture brochure). Haven't ridden Brightline but hopefully and expectantly the cars ride like magic carpets, and quietly so.

@@xnaylo335 I don’t think that’s the reason. In theory all trains operating on a line should have a set loading gauge that they can’t exceed, and if some platforms are raised and some aren’t, it’ll be the raised ones that define the loading gauge. It’s probably just that they were built before the current rolling stock was introduced and they never bothered to address the issue.

The SC-44 version of the Charger is already in service, but the passenger cars are not. It is so difficult and frustrating to see this. Calgary has gone over 32 years without ANY VIA Rail service and there is no talk about restoring any service whatsoever. These are beautiful cars and will make for a fantastic rail experience, one that is denied to citizens of Canada's fourth largest city. If you aren't able to drive, inter-city buses no longer exist and rail travel hasn't ever existed for the lifetime of the majority of Calgarians. Forget getting anywhere that isn't served by an airline. We can't even travel to Canada's first National Park, Banff, by VIA Rail. Is there any wonder why western alienation and a sense of financial exploitation continues decade after decade here? Enjoy these wonderful trains...they might as well be running in Europe or Japan for all of the opportunity I will ever have to use this tax-subsidized transportation service.

Agreed, Alberta needs to get back its Via service. It's -- sort of -- understandable how passenger rail failed leading up to the 80s, with cars and roads becoming the de facto standard in Canada and attitudes toward mass transit of any kind very much stalled, including in Ontario and Quebec where investment was poorly executed, investment limited, and basically not taken seriously for decades. Really the only thing keeping Via going in eastern Canada at all, despite the lack of seriousness, was just enough population density to keep demand "just" high enough to keep the lights on. Between the GTA and SW Ontario, to Ottawa, then Montreal/Quebec City you've got over 15 million people across the corridor. Alberta didn't have that density so the scale just didn't play well with a climate that didn't take passenger rail service seriously. Now, in the 2020's, I agree 100% Via needs to take all of Western Canada passenger rail seriously again. How that works economically I have no idea, but at least major cities in AB (and possibly SK too) could reopen a network I'm sure (acknowledging my complete lack of research on this).

These are indeed beautiful trains and I will look forward to travelling on them. However, it is unfortunate that VIA and the government of Canada are not building a TGV between Toronto-Montréal-Ottawa. What they are planning is a train that will arrive on time. While this is something we all want, arriving at our destination faster is of utmost importance. Having travelled on the old SNCF trains between Paris and Strasbourg, which is roughly the same distance as Toronto-Montréal, took 4,5 hours 20 years ago. Now, the distance is covered in 1h50 on the TGV, making either destination a day trip. Thus, having a train that will still take at best 5 hours to do the same distance in Canada is a missed opportunity to bring train travel to the 21st century in this country.
