What is not often known about the Southern Alps is that while the peak altitudes are relatively low , the mountains are quite tall due to the fact that they rise from sea level. Other mountain ranges rise from high plateaux i.e. The Himalaya , Andes , European Alps , Rockies etc

Correct . That's why Hillary was so good. All the climbs were technically more challenging but they started at sea level so didn't have the height.

Thanks Donovan - great video as always! It's the beaches I'll miss most about NZ - the buoyancy of salt water is so lovely to swim in, but I'll make sure we make it to the East Coast to explore. Something to look forward to! ❤ I was incensed to have to pay to get into Montreal public gardens, but now I understand the free gardens are just a Kiwi thing 😅 Warning about the meat pies - I tried to make them in Canada, but you can't buy proper flaky pastry so the pastry is dense and chewy - not right at all (you'll see what I mean). I'm going to have to try making the pastry from scratch. I'm not a fan of poutine, but I do really like grillades (which are hard to make here - no fresh pork sliced like bacon), so that's something!

Thank you, Trudi! Ahh that’s a good point, that’s probably why I’ve never been a fan of savoury pies before, it’s because I never found a good one! If you make it from scratch and it turns out I might have to get the recipe off of you! 😃

In the north of the UK, the evening meal is referred to as 'tea'. That's where that comes from. I live in Australia and you will find plenty of people referring to the evening meal as tea as well, but it tends to be only in an very informal setting. If you are planning to go out with some friends it's dinner. (Ps in the north of UK there is also the older version where dinner is your lunch time meal).

Also, in regards to lingo - took me a hot min to understand “I’m busting” I knew ppl were saying they had to go to the washroom bad but I took it as #2 only and kind of felt TMI at first. Cool, knowing both places nothing there I’d disagree with 😀. The tea-dinner thing is interesting because growing up in the South Island through the 50’s and 60’s I’m pretty sure “dinner “ was interchangeable with “lunch” but more likely to say be a roast whereas lunch might be more casual and “tea” was always the evening meal.👍

I should point out: You say sandles, we say... sandles. Unless you're talking about a Specific Type of sandles (which Americans usually call Flipflops, Australians call Thongs, etc.)... Those are Jandles. Originally a brand name derived from the strapping (whatever the technical term for that is) being very similar to that of a traditional Japanese Sandle, in contrast to the traditionally fairly common Roman Sandle (which were reasonably common summer footware for kids back in the day), or various other types.

Firstly ill have to point out that ya got some editing issues on the list of NZ peaks there haha! Most of the "NZ peaks" listed weren't NZ peaks lol, such as "Mt Vancouver" ;) .. Other than that i wont fault ya! Nice Eddyline Brewery tee there too! Cant say I've had lots of their beer but I'm big on Duncans, Garage Project, & Urbanaut would probably be my consistent favorite craft breweries.. We're pretty lucky in that respect that NZ Hops are some of the worlds most sought after due to their fruity notes.. Good clip btw. I live in Christchurch & don't go up to Nelson much but it's a beautiful part of the world. Do the Abel Tasman Inland Track sometime. It's not the popular coastal track ya have to book ahead, but the one that goes over the range instead & is a B level trail, so it is free since it isn't a Great Walk, but it's absolutely stunning! be prepared for a big hike up though, it's high enough that ya get to alpine scrub & you'll see the odd Kea, even in the middle of summer! Do it from the afternoon, & stay a night at the first shelter, & you'll see the sun rise from across the bay, but behind the Nelson mountains, it's a pretty magical spot.. :)

Haha I don’t know what to tell ya, there’s a “Mt Vancouver” here in NZ named after George Vancouver. Duncan’s, Garage Project, and Urbanaut are all really awesome, those are arguably my five favourite breweries on the North Island actually haha Yeah I had a whole 8 minute section about the beer that I had to cut because it was way too long but I’ll be making a video about New Zealand beer and showcasing the hops in this area, should be a lot of fun. dairies - because back in the day before supermarkets were established they sold - dairy products!!! -wiki -The term dairy came into common usage in New Zealand English to describe small shops by the late 1930s. Perishables such as milk and eggs were formerly delivered to city households from a dairy farm; by the late 1930s, small shops stocked such produce, and the term shifted to describe these shops.

There are, in fact, a few parts of the country where you have to be careful about wild pigs and deer. There's also a couple of poisonous spiders (though you have to intentionally go out of your way to actually encounter them, and further still to have them attack rather than flee). But yeah, most places there's nothing but the (apparently uncommonly tricky) weather... and the natural disasters, of course.

NZ as a whole is better than most with animal welfare. Our farming practices are world leading. No where near perfect buy we're always striving to be better.
