Robbie doing wheelies to warm up the crowd.....I was in the Grandstand that day and loved every minute it.....fond memories of my teens..... I will point out that the fair grounds and location have ALWAYS been know as The Canadian National Exhibition.....or CNE....I enjoyed watching the footage.....and can almost hear the sounds of the Midway rides and the smorgasbord of carnival eats.... Evel ....you were one of my favourite features on Wide World of Sports.....you and Robbie are both missed by many of the lives you touched......Rip

I was there as well. 13 yrs old doing jumps and catwalks all day long on my bike, and then my Mom took my brother and I to see Evel jump. Lighthouse opened for Evel and did a great job - then the showman came out and we went ballistic. After his successful jump we all ran out to the field - my brother and I pulled some wood splinters from the blue landing ramp. I saved those blue splinters for years. I miss those days.

You know what amazes me about Evel Knievel is the fact that with his money he could’ve upgraded the shock absorbers in the front forks on any motorcycle but he never did he used stock junk
@robertshabarekh6103 жыл бұрын
That’s what made him the King my brother in Peace ✌🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
@dand3975 Жыл бұрын
Them stock shocks were made for racing on a flat dirt track, in 1974 the dirt bikes did not have long travel suspensions. The dirt bikes were in early stages of development. To Evel's credit he Jumped the H.D. flat track racer As Far as it could go with the parts available in the day. Doug Danger jumped Evel's 1972-1974 H.D. The jump is vell documented. Doug jumped that bike slightly further with modern back shocks, not sure if the front forks were modified.

I've always been a huge fan of Evel Knievel but I do have to say, he was the WORST motorcycle rider in the business. He would hit the ramp and hold on...that's it. It was never pretty, he had no idea how to control the bike in the air or anything. Im amazed he made the jumps he did. But I'm still a fan.
@silasmarner75864 жыл бұрын
His technique was certainly not perfect. Having said that, he DID lotsa practice jumps when he could. The LA Coliseum was a picture perfect landing, so was Portland March 31st 1974 (often mis-dated as 1973) which I attended. Very smooth.
@leonardhudson38103 жыл бұрын
How can you control a bike that weighs 6 or 7 hundred pounds while it's in the air? The bikes that these kids back flip weigh a third of what he was riding.
@becomeaudible13 жыл бұрын
Leonard Hudson the brakes and the throttle. Doesn't matter the weight, the back wheel is a gyroscope. Give it a little gas or hit the brake and the front will will go up or down. Evel had no idea how to do that. It was clear when you watch him jump. The front of the bike goes skyward on almost every one of his jumps. He really wasn't in control during those jumps. Watch Robbie Maddison, he's a perfect example of someone who controls the bike in the air during the jump. Also, he never has his front wheel way up in the air like Evel Knievel did.
