Walter, excellent video - very informative 5* and thank you for sharing. I also visited your website and read the "Runaway at Flat Creek" story. Phew! I think I'll be back on your website from time to time - looks like there is plenty of interesting "stuff!" - Mike

And I thought I have watched all of your rail car videos, but this was interesting! NS should park one different rail car near you and let you explain everything like you did on this one. Excellent education Walter!

I have a question about the draw bars. I know they have slack movement that can be pulled out or bunched, but I see what looks like a slot on the side and a piece that inserts like a key. Obviously to allow slack but keep it from pulling all the way out. My question is how much of a beating can that key take before it needs replacing?

I may do A video explaining how they work Thanks for the idea

Nice inspection. This piece of equipment is what I lovingly call "BNBA" - Brand New Bent Already. Of course the word "bent" can be substituted with "broke", "busted", "beat", "bashed", "boned", etc. I noticed you mentioned the bld date 01-99 and your video was posted May22-99. There's a LOT of BNBA stuff happens in my line of work, too. Funny thing, nobody ever knows anything about it, either. I seem to be the one who comes along next to use it and finds the damage. Oh well, they can't stay new forever.

do the rail cars automatically release the knuckle without a crewman doing it manually?
@pwalpar5 жыл бұрын
It must be opened by a crew member lifting the uncoupling lever

wat are the 2 big holes for oneach ends of the hopper?
@Reaglesracing44_5 жыл бұрын
how do the brakes work on a rail car?
@pwalpar5 жыл бұрын
Air brakes use pressure to make them release if pressure is lost the brakes apply same on trucks too
@Reaglesracing44_5 жыл бұрын
pwalpar interesting!

Gotta be careful opening knuckles. Sometimes folks will steal the knuckle pin. If you have to reach in and open the knuckle and aren't paying attention, when you pull on that knuckle, she'll come all the way out and right down on your foot. Be careful, be careful.
@pwalpar6 жыл бұрын
They dont have to be stolen often the top inch or so of the Knuckle pin is still there. Ive changed many over the years and I know what can happen when A 70 pound knuckle falls out lol
