🗾 *The Halligen* have a remarkable story to tell. These resilient North Sea islands were once part of the mainland. Fertile farmlands and settlements dotted the low-lying coastal region of Germany. Their incredible transformation began with the Great Drowning of 1362. This catastrophe claimed 25,000 lives and reshaped the entire coastline. It separated chunks of land from the continent, creating the first Halligen. The survivors adapted to their new island homes. They built 'Warften' - artificial dwelling mounds - to defy the sea. But nature wasn't done. In 1634, the Burchardi flood struck, causing 8,000 more deaths and swallowing entire islands. Yet, against all odds, some Halligen and their inhabitants endured. Today, these remarkable islands are protected within the Wadden Sea National Park. They stand as living monuments to human perseverance. The Halligen's ongoing battle against the sea is a testament to the indomitable human spirit - a story of survival that continues to inspire.

they got lots of tourists. But they have quiet times for sure. Especially in winter and with rough weather.

Our, (The German) society has become so much "americanized" that many young people won't live on a "Hallig" They need high speed internet (for what?) 100 MBit is more than enough, but we Germans are crying if we dont have 1 GBit. Crazy world. They don't have a huge mall, where they can go shopping, and so on...

There is a much longer documentary where they have cameras on a "Hallig" during a flood time, which is quite interesting. For starters, it's not a catastrophe -- it's quite normal. They rely on the same forecasts and status reports that everyone living with or on the ocean relies on, which are updated all the time to be as accurate as possible, and they move everything to the high ground before the water arrives. Which is obviously where the houses are built. In theory, all the houses are also designed with potential flooding in mind, although that didn't matter at the time, and they also had a church with a tower which (IIRC) is like the last-resort shelter. But, as always, the main takeaway was that nobody is surprised by the island getting flooded, and everyone knows what they are doing. Nobody is panicing, they have plenty of supplies for themselves and the animals; they just keep an eye on whatever protective barricades they have to decide whether something needs to be done, and beyond that they have the forecasts in the radio to "see the future" and prepare accordingly. They did NOT talk about things like medical emergencies. Being in a storm is likely making things too difficult for emergency services to reach the island via helicopter or boat, so I guess that might be an issue...

You forgot to mention the safe rooms. They all have a extra solid safe room elevated from reinforced concrete. It should survive all floods even when the house is washed away.

I already sent a link to the documentary. I think it will be too long for a reaction.
