A couple Canadians try Vietnamese iconic food in Hanoi. Our mission at the start of our one month travelling Vietnam was to eat some of the top Vietnamese recommended local dishes at some of the top rated places in the city. Join us as we make some mistakes and learn along the way as we explore the city through food.
Here are the iconic Vietnamese dishes we tried and the places we visited:
Pho at Phở bưng Hàng Trống (40K VND = $1.70 USD): this was our favourite spot we ate at because of the unique experience of eating in someone’s living room. Pho is a Vietnamese national dish known globally. It’s commonly eaten at breakfast but we ate it all throughout the day on our travels.
Banh Mi at Vân Mít Bánh Mì near St Joseph Cathedral (25K VND = $1.06 USD): this dish is influenced by French colonialism in Indochina combining flavours, ingredients and tastes from the two countries. It is meat, fresh vegetables and a moreish sweet sauce inside crispy baguettes.
Bahn cuon at Bahn Cuon Nong food stall (35K VND = $1.49 USD): this dish is steamed rice rolls filled with mushrooms, shallots and ground pork topped with crispy shallots served with a fish sauce. This food stall is more of a local spot.
Bun Cha at Bun Cha Que Tre (35K VND = $1.49 USD): Bun Cha is a pork and noodle dish that originated from Hanoi with grilled pork patties, rice noodles, herbs, and a dipping sauce. This dish became an overnight sensation after President Obama was photographed eating this dish with Anthony Bourdain in Hanoi in 2016.
Egg coffee at Cafe Giang (35K VND = $1.49 USD): Egg coffee was created in Hanoi in response to a milk shortage caused by the French War, whisking in egg as a substitute. It tastes more like dessert than coffee but it’s delicious. Cafe Giang was founded in 1946 by Mr Nguyen Giang who is said to be the original creator of egg coffee in Vietnam.
There are many more delicious Vietnamese dishes, these are just a few.
