A paver walkway is nice, but very expensive and time consuming. A plain slab of concrete is less expensive, but plain to look at. There are some neat molds that allow you to have the look of intricate pavers but poured from concrete. I've never used them until now, but how hard can it be? I'll let you know.

Greetings from Ukraine)) I watched your video and I can give practical advice on the improvement of this kind of paths)) Put geofabric under the gravel pillow, though I don’t know if you have it on sale or not, but you can replace it with dense polyethylene to ensure the removal of excess moisture , prevent the growth of weeds. And also, before using the molds, grease it with any kind of automotive oil, the edges of the tile will be perfectly smooth and concrete will not stick))) Success in work😎

Hey, greetings! That is a good tip about the fabric, I won't have an issue here but others might so thanks! I don't have any leftover oil to put on, it all gets recycled. But I have had good luck spraying moulds with a good coat of wd-40 first, I never even thought to do it. Thanks and stay safe! 🇨🇦 🇺🇦

When i made paving slabs, we used spray oil too and I completely forgot about this as when I bought my moulds on Amazon, the reviews from people never mentioned that they used oil to coat the frames. Not used my moulds yet. Still need to prep the ground. But thanks for reminding me about the oil!

I used the cheap, yellow bag concrete mix and waited only 10 minutes before picking up the mold, no problem, the ‘stones’ will keep their shape as you gently pull the mold out. No need to wait longer than that, really…. 😊

I agree about putting weed preventative like(landscape fabric down under the molds). I use very little landscape fabric but for hard to manage areas. Can then fill in gaps with something else, mulch, pebbles, etc. I want to do this project so thank you for your advice and encouragement. You have given me very useful ideas. Ahna Atlanta/Georgia

fyi i used regular bags of concrete and they worked fine. just make sure you do not add too much water. add a little at a time, it should not be runny but wet enough to get the cream to the top. You can pull the mold immediately after troweling. if you’re making a long path the fast setting concrete will add up.
@arnoldpainal5885

The reason for the large gaps is because they used two molds where these molds are designed to use it once, let the cement dry, remove the mold and then place the same mold right up against the cured cement from the first mold.

Hi, thanks for the video! Very helpful. Just wondering, I have these molds too but have not used them as yet. I notice that the sections do not allow for joining shapes within the one mold, have you found that any of the ‘stones’ have come away from each other? Essentially breaking the path?

The problem you will have over time is movement. Each section of the mould is just sitting on dirt, so after a while you will see they have moved. First, you deeded to dig out about 4 inches for a concrete base. Then place your moulds on top of that base, the path will then have something solid to bind to, it will not move after that. Also fill the gaps with a cement mix of a different colour to stop any movement.

I watched a few videos on this. Some people are just using dirt. They are digging out and raking out the ground and watering it and getting to where it hardens up then they do the concrete molds and when they’re done they check dirt and they put it on top of the molds brush it in and put it all around them they wet that down over and over so that it gets wet and it dries and gets wet and it dries and they say even after a while they’ll put on some more and it starts filling everything in. In fact I see the dirt underneath even though it might be an even in places when they put the concrete it fills it in. people who had done this several years ago and when you look at it it looks fine. The only thing is the concrete ages so it’s just getting darker as time goes by! I don’t know if people realize that the color will change. I have seen people go in and actually use some sort of stain on the fake walkway if that’s what you wanna call it. And then on top of that they use a sealer. I would imagine that that it will keep it its color for sometime. However with every step that they do this the color changes! It might get less colorful or it might get brownish it might turn somewhat of a gray. So the best thing to do is just keep checking this. One day when I want to do this I’ll probably know enough from these tutorials to pull it off.

Thanks, glad you liked it! It is quite the workout, I'd suggest a second set of hands if you can find them. As for the concrete, the brand isn't so important. Check the psi on the bag, 5000 lbs would be preferable. Also, check and see if it's a fast set like walk on ready in 8-10 hours, that'll work. Then just make sure not to mix it too wet. Good luck on yours and keep me posted, I'd love to see it if you email me some pics when you're done!

Hi, thanks so much for the video! I am wanting to do this in order to make a patio for my outdoor table to sit on top of. Question for you: Is it possible for me to make the concrete pieces and then move them to where we want them later? I.e., I'm not prepared to gid and level the area just yet, but figured I could make the pavers now and then install them to the specific spot we want them in a month or so (when it's less hot). So, is that possible? And if so, how would I go about that?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 8 ай бұрын
No problem, glad you liked it. You could do it that way, however you'll have a hard time getting everything looking uniform and even again. At that point it may be easier to get pavers from the store and make a pattern with them. These were really meant to be poured in place. If you do want to try moving them just lay some plastic down on concrete, then sprinkle a bit of sand over the plastic so the concrete won't stick to it and make them in the driveway or something just like I showed

Hi Jesse! Question on the paver molds. So after removing the mold, they basically become individual stones? Would you recommend the sand first and then a curing topper (forget what you called it 🤦🏻‍♀️)? Ideally, I want to create a walkway on the side of the house and basically want each complete mold, to be one big stone. So they’re not all falling apart. Hope you catch my questions and lack of knowledge lol but looking forward to your recommendation and input and/or additional knowledge. Don’t hesitate to throw in any additional helpful ‘do not do’s’ or any ‘should have done’ updates you have learned the last couple years since the original post. Thanks so much Jesse, appreciate the thorough video.
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 12 күн бұрын
Hey there, yeah they are basically small individual stones after. But if you want to lock it all together, put the moulds closer together unlike me so it looks like more of a running pattern. Let them cure for a couple days, then add some polymeric sand. The polymeric sand is swept in between them and then rinse it all. The water will harden the polymeric sand almost like concrete itself and act like a grout. The stones won't fall apart or move after that but still look individual. Then you can get really any concrete sealer from the store and use a paint roller or a sprayer and apply it. It can go over the concrete and sand. Hope that helps!

I do like these molds as it makes doing a big job manageable for one person. But here in Australia concrete comes in 20Kg bags. That's 45 lbs which is a nightmare for getting a combination that is manageable and fills the molds exactly. I have just ordered one of their smaller molds and hope that one 20kg bag will do the job.

Awesome! I have a great shed series too if you want to learn how to build the shed as well. Some moulds do and some don't, some will only line up to one other side of it. It will usually come with instructions on what will line up with what, that's why in the beginning I was double checking how it lined up. And no, the concrete I showed and that I used is a bagged concrete specifically with a fast set time. Bagged concrete is already pre-made and with any additives already added, you just add water. The concrete is the biggest area people make mistakes, that's why I described what not to do, and showed which one to use. Good luck on yours

Thanks for the video. However, you have contradictory statements regarding concrete sticking and not sticking to the rocks. At 3:24 in the video you stated it will help the concrete stick to the rocks. At 5:52 in the video you stated it will not stick to the rocks. Which statement is correct?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Anytime. Yeah sorry, now that I watch it again I see how it can be confusing without clarification. So wetting the rocks before pouring your concrete will get the dust off of them so the concrete will bond to them, it likes wet things to stick to. This creates a nice rocky base for it and helps it stick to the ground and gives it a bit more strength. When I was pouring the leftover concrete out I just dumped it on dry rocks and it is less likely to stick to them. However if it does, the small pea rocks it's sitting on wont be a big deal, some will stick, some won't if it's dry, but picking it up and throwing it out is easy, you don't want the leftover to sit on a driveway because it will stick to that and picking it up will be very hard. That's all. While pouring, you want it wet so they do stick. Hope that clears it up.

I'm getting ready to do my first one but I read if you spray the mold with pam . It acts as a mold release .

Cool. That will work for the first time, but then it'll be covered in concrete and the new will stick to old. I'd just keep it wet and remember to rinse it off with water everytime and it'll be fine. Good luck on yours!

I may try something like this. I have a driveway that's part asphalt and part concrete slab; both sections really, really old and also cracked. How would you prevent weeds from growing inside the gaps, though, without using any herbicides (there are kids around here). Thanks for content. Keep up the good work. בס'ד
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Ай бұрын
That would be something, but be prepared for the amount of work, it's still heavy concrete. When you're done, use a polymeric sand and then rinse that. It hardens like a grout between the stones so weeds can't grow. Hope that helps

Anytime, happy to help. I have the mould linked in the description and I showed the concrete mix to use. The concrete is where people make their mistakes. If you have a normal mix and not a quicker setting mix like I showed you'll probably have to wait a couple hours. But the mix I used you only need to wait 10 mins

When is the best time to grout in between the molds to finish the job ?

Depending on the mix used, high early like I used you probably could in like 48 hours. Regular mix I'd wait a week

Shouldn’t these be pressed into a cement base, putting 2 together gives you a stepping stone effect not continuous path, also how do the individual sections hold together when the slab is the same thickness as the mould? I think they’ll fall apart when you start walking on them.
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Жыл бұрын
You can try to press it, but it won't be easy with all the aggregate in the concrete. The way I did it is the way concrete manufacturer says to use them, and it makes sense to me. If I would have just put them closer together it would have made a continuous pattern. Well once they're done, you need to find a way to finish them. Whether that be polymeric sand and edging to lock them in place, or like I said to dig down a couple inches in your lawn and pour them, then backfill it in with dirt and grass so they are embedded like cobblestones

It was close to level. I used my rocks raked out to smooth it and bring it into level. These can go basically anywhere and it's up to you and your project if you want them level or following the ground

2 bags of 55lbs mix, right? So, about 36lbs per mold? I wanted to check b/c the website for Quikcrete said one said 80lbs per mold. That seemed like a lot and it’s a big difference from yours. 5:14
