At my side right now I have cables I made some 27 years ago, using L-4E6S and Neutrik NC3 connectors. Aside from some cracking on the XLR boot, these have held up perfectly well to this day in studio use. I've made many, many cables in the last three decades and L-4E6S was always my go-to. Mogami is excellent as well. They have many models and I would use them often, but something about the way Canare looks and feels won me over, despite being harder to prep for termination. These days my favorite cable is GAC-3 from Gotham Cable. It's thinner and more flexible than the Canare and feels velvety smooth in the hand. Instead of a braided shield it has two spiral shileds wound in opposite directions so it's far easier to terminate than L-4E6S and the noise rejection is also excellent. Also, it has three insulated conductors which makes for some very interesting termination and shielding options. It's an incredible cable priced on par with Canare and I highly recommend checking it out, especially for studio work.

Check the specification for each variant. Canare is clear on their specs and that is much more helpful than "thought to be lower quality". That doesn't rule out the cable from China having some subtle difference in metal composition or insulation formation that could alter its properties in edge cases. Nice to have the clear discussion otherwise - thanks for the video.

Canare StarQuad cable works like magic, i've had noise on a normal cable and the StarQuad doesn't pick up anything.

thanks for the video, really good insights, at what length does the quad cable start experiencing high frequency loss? does the high frequency loss occur only from mic to a board (mic level)? or does it also affect from a board to a powered speaker (line level)?

...Recommend to friends and family... "Mom! I told you already! the single best cable money can buy is the Canare L-4E6S- with gold neutrik contacts. No!! not the L-4E6S+!" but in actuality this was super helpful. Bummer they don't offer these widely in the UK. I might order to the US and pick up when I visit. What are your thoughts on Gotham AG cables and their tasty mythological Reussen sheilding?

For PA stuff I like Canare for decent price vs performance. For line level studio stuff I like Mogami for better sound quality. I didn’t blind test as I can tell just by swapping all cables between the two brands.

Working on my setup (as you could guess by the comments I been leaving lololol) my papaw is in a band and he has all kinds of XLR cables…sooo ima just stick to the free ones, but this is good flr the future

These are definately not for the budget minded home creators. Amazon wants $100(CDN) for a 3 foot cable. Adding in 11% taxes and shipping, not for me ....

I'm having trouble to find the canare cable with neutrik gold pins 🥹 only have found the silver ones on Amazon Mexico 😩 do you think there's a big difference?
