It was a family ritual to have Candlepins for Cash on the small black and white television in the kitchen while having our supper!

Captain: No such luck in my family. We had the same small black and white TV but I could not turn it on until supper and all my homework was completed.

I always enjoyed my tech service trips to New England, mostly between 1980 and 1992. That candlepin game is darned tough, but a load of fun.

Fun fact, the creator and executive producer of the "Bowling for Dollars" format, Bert Claster, is also well known as the creator and executive producer of "Romper Room."

It's a shame what happened to Bob Gamere. He once "had it all".

This is actually from the original WNAC-TV version of "Candlepins for Cash," the lanes in the basement of WNAC on Bullfinch Place. I recognize the set. I also recognize the voice of that old Channel 7 announcer. I want to say his name was John Callahan. But I am sure somebody out there who knows will tell me if I am right or wrong about that. I never watched the show in the years it aired on WXNE (now WFXT), Chanel 25. But I did watch the show, especially in its first few years, on WNAC.

just for the heck of it i searched for the kids names on FB with no luck. They'd probably love to see themselves as kids and their dad. They'd have to be mid-late 50's now.

For Richard Long: Some time after this clip was put together, I talked to someone at the station and was told that the original tapes had been destroyed. Did not try to verify this statement but would guess it was true because the originals I believe were 2" and 1" tapes had become the choice of use for editing.

Okay, I cannot edit my old post. But I now know the announcer heard in this video is that of the late Leif Jensen, not that of the late John Callaghan, who also worked at the old/original WNAC-TV, but as a sports and news reporter.

I was on the show in February 1978 in the Govt. Center basement. I won $8, an electric can opener, and $20 for Chinese food at China Sails. I never used it. I was the subject of ire from women at the two places I worked. I could've taken a married waitress nearly twice my age out for a meal. That would've been memorable.

Lynn English Where did you obtain this old WNAC video? Did you actually have a video recorder in the 1973-80 period, from which you recorded the program yourself? Or did/do you, perhaps, have some connection to the original WNAC-TV?

gymnastix At the time of the broadcasts, I was running the data processing center for the Lynn School System out of Lynn Voc/Tech which had a fully functional one inch tape studio installed by the local cable company when the school was built in 1972. The teacher responsible for the studio taught me how to download the shows. I was able to record a couple of friends from two different shows and had it all set up to record my own appearance but the "friend" responsible for starting the recording forgot to turn the system on.

Sorry Peter, it's Bob Gamere (he mentions his name at the very start of the tape). gymnastix is correct, the show was shot in the basement of WNAC. This video was made at Lynn Tech's TV Center when the show aired. For those looking for old shows, I was told that WNAC did not save those tapes but there are past shows than can be found on You Tube.

shoofirbin Thanks for the correction and thanks for the compliment...just happened to be in the right place at the right time to make the original copy which was to 1" tape later converted to a 1/2" cassette. Will pass your compliment on to my son who did all the work to get it up on KZfaq.

Louis: Thanks for the information. Never knew that candle pins made it outside of New England although the industry did try to establish the game in California. I'm told they juggled the scoring system to generate higher averages to match ten pin scores but it didn't help...Rick

@@lynnenglish7531 The "Bowling for Dollars" show in NY/NJ was done in tenpins format. New York Mets announcer Bob Murphy was the original host, he was later succeeded by radio DJ Larry Kenney.
