I saw your comment the other week, & have been debating the OASE due to removing the heater from within the display. Done tons of reachsearch on it, however there’s one major key point everywhere I’ve looked that said “this canister filter has a loud burble” some have said to drill the pre filter intake (which for the price I don’t want to go through the hassle, just want to plug and play) any opinions on this? I know it’s been 2 years since you’ve commented, but hope you reply lol

I like the analogy of a canister filter as a “reactor with an internal motor.” That said; I use a Bulk Reef Supply mini reactor for polishing. Carbon, GFO, foam replaced with pond filter/Pinkie Floss and off you go! Picking up a few extra cartridges makes weekly or biweekly changes painless. Thanks for your insight, Jim

This looks like what I want. I had forgotten about canister filters, I want to run a tank without permanent mechanical filtration because I think it would be good to have food suspended in the water column more often for my corals without constantly pulling it out before the corals can get to it. I ran a tank for a while without a filter or skimmer but thought it would be nice to toss something on to polish the water once or twice a week.
@dusk1947

I have that exact model, it ran my freshwater tank for quite some time until I decided to drill the tank and play with the ecology and filtration. Good Canister Filter. Performed excellently. Even then, I still ran it for extra filtration and it was essentially a fancy powerhead after that point. From a biological perspective, it will filter salt water just as well. If you want a super simple system, canisters are awesome. Even in Salt. The only limitation is that any attachments have to be in-line on the canister return line. Which can limit automation or nutrient export options quite heavily. However, those are add-on's and not truly essential... Nice to have, but not essential.

My first reef tank was a 55 gallon run on a Fluval 406, the only reason I switched to a sump was because everyone kept telling me my canister was a nitrate factory. I run a fluval fx4 on my 45 gallon plastic stock tank. Running it with the included filter pads and got it crammed full with seachem matrix. This was all supposed to be a temporary setup when my 40 gallon reef tank sprung a leak. Over a year later and it’s still running great. When I started my second frag system I refurbished the old filter and used it. The output of the filter goes through the uv and then back to the tank.

I have always thought of canister filters as self-contained, enclosed sumps. Not really as media reactors since there isn't any movement of the media. I have owned plenty of canister filters, from Eheim to Aqua Design Amano. This line of filters looks like a cheap piece of crap. The plastic looks extremely cheap, media baskets increase bypass, plunger gimmick is heat but looks like an accident 5 waiting to happen. Quick releases and pipe locks look cheap....I like the thick hose it uses though. The only thing this filter has going for it is the Sicce pump. Sicce makes good pumps. If you want a canister filter do yourself a favor an get an Eheim or Oase. I will take an Eheim Classic 2217 over this thing any day. More inconvenient to use but way more efficient.

Don’t ever go with a canister filter go with an AIO system or a sump, I learnt the hard way, there’s no real way to export nutrients with a canister filter it just holds and eventually clogs with detritus as all that is used In one is sponges and filter media anything like fish poop, food ect gets filtered out of the water by the sponges and just sits there until it is changed creating phosphate, nitrate ect and since cleaning a canister filter is not preferable on a regular basis it is not fit for a reef tank
@AydenDevonny
@AydenDevonny 3 жыл бұрын
I've been using a cheap Chinese canister since I started in the hobby. The maintenance isn't even all that hard or different from a system running filter socks or something. 1-3 times a month during a water change I disconnect the filter from the system, dispose of the water in the canister body, change the filter pads (also clean the old foam pads), rinse the media in fresh saltwater, fill up the filter, and close it all up. Takes like 5-10 minutes added to my water change routine (take out water from DT, clean glass, etc). My levels have always stayed within my goal ranges
