So complete! I had no idea that cannas came in different heights. I'd found it difficult to add real color n sturdy height to my deep flower beds. I do enjoy the different folliage. I've been enjoying having my first cannas ever. It's 19th of August here in France and we've already had 2 very severe heat waves. We had the hottest temperature ever recorded in Paris n in other parts of France. My garden suffered greatly but the cannas lived on beautifully. I'm going to rethink big parts of my garden in order to take into consideration these huge climate changes n I will certainly take into account yr advice as I will certainly add more cannas. I'm already looking forward to choosing new ones. Many thanks.

Hi, I love my cannas. Thanks for the great advice. Just wondering if it is suitable to fertilise my water cannas which are in ponds with the same fertiliser I use on my in ground cannas which is 'Rooster Booster' as well as potash? The reason I ask is that I have numerous frogs, tadpoles and frogs eggs. I don't want to harm these creatures in any way.

I had two plants last year. They died off the day before Thanksgiving. I cut off the dead stalks and foliage and dragged the pots into my dark cold garage. I didn't have time due to having so much going on to properly dig them up and store them. The little buggers started growing in the cold dark garage when we had a couple of days in the 70s in December. I didn't water them or anything but they kept growing even in the dark and without water. I just took them out to divide and repot for this upcoming season. Some of the stalks are alreadtv18-24 inches. I'm convinced they can be grown as a houseplant year round. I would suggest grow lights so they bloom properly.

Having had the pleasure of a short term job in Melbourne, I would mention the canna bed in the Botanic Garden. It is connected I believe to the storm drain system from the adjoining roads. When I first visited in October there was nothing much there, but then in January it was ablaze with colour. The roots are used to filter and clean the run-off, which as no doubt you'll know can be considerable in temperate Melbourne. Perhaps you could do a video from there one day, and talk about those Australian plants that will live in the UK?

Thanks for all the great advice. I bought my first cannas last summer at our local supermarket plant section after the hubby was blown away by the showey blooms I planted one each in a large pot surrounded by mini decorative ivy and scaevola, they weren't one of the tallest cannas but they were definitely impressive as I made them the centre of the show lol they lasted well into November. Being in Northern Europe I followed advice to lift seperate and store in the shed. But to be honest it was such a hard job with such heavy pots I only got one pot done I covered the other pot with barkchips and wrapped it up like a baby lol. And to my amazement I dug down and can see nice green shoots. Love love love this plant.

I don't know much about cannas I was always worried that they would get too tall and topple over or whatever... So I appreciate the information you put it on this video very very much! Especially the information about cutting back the branch that has quit flowering because it'll make the plant grow a new shoot. I'm very ignorant I guess on the growth cycle of cannas so all this information has been very very helpful. My cannas AR right now or growing in pots and I love the dark leaf ones and I have a bangle striped when I grew From A bulb or root or a rhizome whatever you call them and it has never bloomed but I just absolutely love the leaves and now it's getting a second stem. I just repotted it for a second time it busted the pot it was in. That part was just one I was trying to get it to grow in whenever I bought it as a rhizome. I'm going to fill my patio and show all of my Canna and my elephant ears along with all my other plants especially my coleus and houseplants so that will be later this week it'll be uploaded. So please come to my channel it's Kathleen Murphy and then put one of the following words into the KZfaq search engine house plants orchids coleus or philodendron and you'll find me there's lots of other words you could use but those four will work. I thank you in advance we're coming to my channel and hopefully subscribing because you like what you see. I'm 70 years old and KZfaq has been a lifesaver for me. I have chronic pain in the pain medicine doesn't always do the job it never goes away the whole way but at least it gets bearable. And on the days but I need to try to conquer the pain my plants and KZfaq help me out! And I especially enjoyed the comics the people leave on my videos. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this videos so I could take care of my cannas I will keep in mind that they are heavy feeders and they don't like to dry out because they love water so much. I will make sure I put some soil moist crystals in the potting soil when I repot. They are a great invention to help the gardener or the plant person out with plants that grow in the ground or grow in a pot. It's about $16 for a bag of those crystals and Lowe's sells them right where they sell the Miracle Grow fertilizer here in America. That's $16 bag will do 50 hanging baskets. They absorbed 50 times their weight in water and I think they help the people that over water their plants cuz they suck up the extra water and hold it in reserve and it helps the people who sometimes neglect to water play because there's a reserve of water for the plant there. It's saved my coleus the other day because I had to go to the hospital with my son and I couldn't water and it was windy and extremely hot the plants when I pick the pots up or as light as a feather but they hadn't welded yet because of that extra water in the soil moist crystals. The other thing I think the soil moist crystals do is with their expansion and contraction they help keep the soil aerated and from becoming compacted. I think it's the best invention that's come into the Plant World in a long time. I can't live without it and neither can my plants. Thanks again for this video I appreciate it very much it's a lot of work to do a video unless a person has done a video they don't realize it.

I've been using these plants for the last 2 years and they're great I have the multi color one, the green one, and the red one, but I thought these were annuals that was why I cut them down and dig up the bulbs and store them in my basement and this year they started growing through the bag. I have a ton of bulbs because it's like they multiply I started out with 2 plants then I dug them up and the next year I had enough bulbs to plant 6 more plants and right now I have 2 bags full of green cannas, 2 red cannas planted, 1 multicolored canna planted and 8 green cannas planted.

I then think 'more water' hmm.. maybe its 'too much water'.. but the truth is, it doesn't really matter what I do to them, once they decide they are ready, they GROW!😂 Same for the soil, good, bad, fertilizer -or not, I often think they are just laughing at me and doing whatever they want🤣 I amend my sandy soil each year, and then, haha, I find them sprouting over in the sand and weeds! 🤷‍♀️

I've tried slug pellets but to no avail and I'm sure the slugs are living in my pots. Any ideas woukd be welcome.

I'm in zone 5 of the USA. I love Cannas! Lots of work digging and replanting though. Do you think that I would be able to just mulch over, or place straw on top during the cold winters here - or best to keep digging them up & replanting?
@TheMiddlesizedGarden
@TheMiddlesizedGarden 4 жыл бұрын
I think Zone 5 might be too cold. It could be worth trying it, if you're prepared to lose a few plants but I don't think I'd bet much on them surviving. But if you keep them in pots, maybe you could just bring the pots in somewhere sheltered, such as a garage in winter rather than having to dig everything up.

@@TheMiddlesizedGarden Thanks for the reply! One more quick question.. Best way to store Cannas over the winter? I've heard multiple ways & usually the way I do it - they survive well. Typically I punch holes in a big box & layer the rhizomes between newspaper - which has worked fine in years past. This past year though I lost about 100 rhizomes due to rot. Perhaps I did let them dry out enough? Almost as if sap had leaked out of them & many became moldy / rotted. I've seen some people just dig up a whole clump & store it like that - but others have said not to do that. Thanks In advance for any clarification you can offer.

I have been growing cannas for many years. However here in Canada I do have to dig them up and store them in the basement. The problem is starting them indoors. Some of my rhizomes are very big and wont go into a pot, but then to wait until 24 May I dont get flowers for quite a while and so short season. Do you have any tips on what to use to start them indoors, also do you have a source you recommend that I can order some more exotic varieties, cant seem to get anything but red flowers here. I love the look of one called Bethany . Any help would be appreciated as I grow about 30-40 plants around my well

Although this is a UK company, they are specialist canna growers and so they might know who supplies good cannas in Canada? (or they might even mail order cannas abroad?). I think they would probably also be able to answer your question about starting them out. I love Bethany too, though I think it's not easy to find even here in the UK. Hope that helps.

Hi luckily I stumbled onto your channel and its great thanks but i need help please. I have green and purple canna I recently planted at my new home from an extremely old stock I had at my old house. They took off as they do in south Alabama as its a tropical type environment super humid always and hot. I'm glad they took to their new home but something's chewing up the leaves bad they look sick almost all chewed like that. I been thinking snails but I'm not sure. Have any thoughts? Anything I can do? Thanks in advance greetings from the States

Snails do go for cannas, but I'm not familiar with other pests that might be in South Alabama. Do you have ferric phosphate slug pellets? They don't damage other wildlife so they could be a good solution to try around the cannas to see if that sorts it. If not, it could be worth asking a local garden group if you have one?

I think take it outside when it's warm enough, introducing it gradually by putting outside during the day and taking it back in at night. Then plant in the soil after a few days of that, if you want it in the soil, if not maybe move to a larger pot.

Hi Alexandra, I'm from Calgary, Canada. I planted my canna this summer. It grows rapidly. Now its height is more that 2 m. Average winter temperature in Calgary is -15C but it might be -40C as well. How to keep the plant safe in low temperatures? As I said before my canna is big and is a big headache to move it to a garage or a basement. Can I trim it and cover with a tarp? Will it survive? Thank you in advance.
@TheMiddlesizedGarden
@TheMiddlesizedGarden 4 жыл бұрын
I think you may find it too cold and that it won't survive if you leave it in the ground. On the other hand, if you're prepared to lose it, then why not try? Let the frost blighted leaves fold over the crown of the plant, pile up the compost and maybe add a tarp or some straw....I must admit that I don't feel very hopeful, but maybe it's better to see if it works and buy new next year if it doesn't....

Been growing these for a long time, but I have a question about why my flowers always get so many seed pods on them while the flowers are often meager. My cannas are hearty, and get like 8 ft tall. I think I need plant food that emphasizes blooms over leaf growth, no?
@TheMiddlesizedGarden
@TheMiddlesizedGarden 4 жыл бұрын
It's always a good idea to cut seed pods off as the plant puts all its energies into the seed heads rather than the flowers. So that may help. In terms of fertiliser, try tomato fertiliser or rose fertiliser, also the fish-based fertilisers like 'blood, fish and bone.' I hope that helps.

I think you can plant anything you like but I'd recommending something really low, like a ground cover, because the whole canna plant is so sculptural, you wouldn't want to cover too much up. Possibly one of the low growing persicarias which are nicely airy.

I just chop the stalk off - I remove anything that would be showing above ground or that is showing above ground when I leave them in.
