Dr. Patricia DiCiano is a scientist with the Institute for Mental Health and Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She is also an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto. Patricia has a multi-disciplinary background and her general research area is clinical trials and regulated studies into the safety of cannabis and other substances of abuse. Earlier this year, she co-authored a study that evaluated the utility of THC cutoff levels in blood and saliva for the detection of impaired driving.
During our conversation, we discussed:
The different allowable limits for THC levels in drivers
The relationship between THC levels and impaired driving
The best fluid to test for THC impairment
The additive effects of combining alcohol and cannabis on driving impairment
The differences in how alcohol and cannabis affect driving performance

Even knowing the amount in blood saliva would that tell you if they are impaired or not? I know I can consume more mg and not be impacted as a new user or someone that does not have the same tolerance as me?

This is when we ask ourselves... what is a cop? They aren't a lawyer, so why are they interpreting law. They aren't doctors, So why are they deemed responsible to correctly use a field kit let alone keep it sterile and uncontaminated. The reality of what a police officer is has to change.

Blood is not accurate in any sort of real world application, for blood to be reliable you need to be 100% sure that the person has no prior concentrations of metabolized thc in blood or fat. By using blood in real world scenario, where you cannot be 100% sure, and most people that are tested have prior concentration because duuuh. This means that people who use cannabis, but are not under the influence are getting targeted because blood cannot differ from inactive and active thc levels. At this point in medical science, still clinging to the blood sample as a "viable" source of measuring intoxication is cruel to the person accused. They will get sentenced no matter what because the blood shows thc, but it says nothing about how much of an impairment the person has because the levels are inactive, and very much individual to the persons prior levels and frequency of metabolism. Its like throwing cooked spaghetti at wall, it's gonna stick. We could just shoot the accused in the leg, or cut off a finger or something, outcome is the same, person did not deserve what happened to them. I know this is US, but if you reading this and you live in Europe. The way medical science stand on the topic of cannabis impairment and specifically using blood to measures impairment. 100% in violation with the European Human Rights Act - Right to a fair trial. You cannot scientifically measure how impaired a person is by analyzing blood, thc just don't work like that.
