In this video, I head out to Hickling Broad in the beautiful Norfolk Broads National park to try out my new Solway Dory canoe sailing rig.
The rig consists of a 25 sq ft lug sail held in shape with a yard and boom and fixed to a removable mast, a pivoting lee board to enable me to sail to windward and a removal rudder and tiller arm. The whole rig is completely removable for normal paddling and stows away in the canoe, set up and take down takes just a couple of minutes - giving me the option to harness the power of the wind for some serious speed and fun!
Canoe sailing is great fun in its own right, but is also very useful in extending range on longer trips and expeditions. I am hoping to make the most of it in an upcoming five day canoe trip in Scotland.
I had a fantastic time trying this rig out - pure adrenaline fuelled fun - I’m still grinning from ear to ear now!
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching!

Lovely video. What a life you've 'carved out' for yourself. Keep up the great work. I'm always reminded of the famous Wind in the Willows quote when I see something like your setup. The way that relatively small sail whips you through the water really shows what an efficient hull shape canoes have. And, come to think of it, the old viking long boats had much the same hull shape, and they were noted for their speed and sea-worthiness. Nice job, Simon - and it looks enormous fun!

Sir, brilliant. Looks terrifying to me but it’s brilliant! Thank you for the cooking, you know I enjoy that, I’ve never bothered with the additions to my Kelly’s Kettles, but I might now, it looks really good. As to your trip, wave at J27 on the M6! Learned to sail on a Super Sailfish back in the early '60s at the Appalachian Mountain Club on Echo Lake, Mt Desert Island, Maine. You're gonna have six-pac abs by the time the summer's through! What a joy to watch. Owned a San Juan 21 swing keel then a Hunter 25.5 with a shoal-draft keel on the Great Salt Lake. What a joy sailing is! Studied up on celestial navigation just for giggles. Took a practice sextant and artificial horizon with me when I drove over-the-road. Still own my Astra 3B. Came real close to crewing on the Impatience out of Brisbane, AU, an International Offshore Racing boat converted to a cruiser, but chickened out because the conversion was VERY dicey and was afraid if she pitch-poled or rolled we'd never get out of it alive. Oh, well! Cheers, Simon.... sail on.... Spamcan

Fantastic to have you on board Simon and once again thank you. The trip is going to be tough but so for filling and so much fun! We have a fantastic team now you have joined us mate. Anyway, I need to talking about this new speed boat you have 🤣... How fast is she now! Lol you really were blasting through the Broads dude. To think you haven’t sailed in 30 years you really did a top notch job pal. The rudder made turning so much easier than having to swap out the sail to the other side and having to hold the paddle in the front and back position. A treat to watch. The stew too 🤤, a hearty lunch for a speed boat pilot 😀. A very enjoyable video, thanks pal 👍

That looked like great fun Simon.Took me back about 50 years when as a youngster ,I used to stand on Potter Heigham bridge watching (and hoping) that some unfortunate would get stuck underneath and then going into Lathams shop to stare in awe at the rows of fishing floats.A few years later had several sailing holidays on the broads and loved getting the boat to haul over on Hickling and Horsey Mere.Like you say, probably wasn’t going very fast but it certainly seemed like it. Great video Best wishes Stuart

This is a grand film of your canoe's maiden voyage as a sailing craft! It particularly resonated with me because I'm now in the final building stage of my own cedar-strip canoe and have been wanting to try out a sailing rig for a long time. You've convinced me to 'go for it'! I also liked your Kelly Kettle cooking arrangement; I could almost taste the stew! And finally, what a worthy object for fundraising during the August canoeing event in Scotland. Can other canoeists join in as participants?

Of course you know you'll now have to start talking like a pirate, (Yaaaarrrrrr!), and start using your canoe barrel to carry your rum ration, ("Up Spirits, Splice the Mainbrace!") I'm thinking you could also rig some sort of a gun deck as well, a couple of 2 pounders or a couple of potato guns should make for an impressive broadside! Interesting, that looked like a lot of fun. It must be strenuous though, trying to hold the sail with one hand and control the tiller with the other. That sail seems very thin, I hope it never rips, or you might face a long row back to shore. The canoe did seem to skim along at great speed though. Loved the banjo music, it just seems to fit your videos so well and I for one, appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos for our enjoyment. A Scootland trip? Be sure your passports in date, you'll need a visa don't forget, and after getting all the jabs I hope your mandatory application to join the SNP comes through okay. I'd also add an extra couple of days to allow for the queues at border. I am only joking of course, it sounds like an epic trip you have planned, and with a great cause to support too. I wish you all well with it and look forward to following it all. I have really enjoyed watching you sail your canoe, its been years since I last went wind powered watering. One piece of advice I'd give though, run the rope from the sail around a pully, it will decrease the load on your fingers by 50%.

Simon, Wow ! The speed.......that's just fantastic ! And in a canoe ! I wonder if my canoe is capable of that. Good luck on the Great Glen canoe trail. I might be doing that later this year or next too so looking forward to your vids. A worthy cause for sponsorship too.

It seems to me that canoe sailing is a lot of fun! The waters that you are at look a lot like ours here in the Netherlands. Good luck and lots of fun!! Greetings, Fred.

Very good results! A turning block(pulley) on the thwart in front of you would be a big bonus for main sheet handling. A ratchet block that is selectable would be ideal. Especially for any longer distance sail.

"Heave to", "prepare to mainsail haul", "come back on those halyards", "idlers and waisters to the rail", "pipe the hands to dinner", "off tacks and sheets", "helm a-lee"..ha ha ha, fitting as I just started the eleventh book of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. Simon, you are a fine coxswain!

You filming and editing is fantastic. It looks like you employed 5 pros to do it. Sailing looked good too. You might want to invest in a small ratcheting block. Good life. Cheers.

Re: canoe stability. Perhaps an outrigger type of modification/upgrade to your excellent canoe would be in order. It can't be all that easy to sail your canoe with such a small center board which actually is more like a side board! Great looking lunch. Perhaps a pale ale should have accompanied your lunch. 😊 Great video. Thanks.
