*ALSO SEE PART 2*
This is a homemade engine powered canoe. The canoe is powerd bij a 5.5HP Honda motor from a lawn mower. I applied a gearbox on the motor so I can put the canoe in forward, neutral and reverse. For the steering I made a rudder wich I can operate with one hand, when I push my hand forward the canoe turns left, when I push my hand backward the canoe turns right.
How the engine and gearbox work is described in PART 2.

I'm willing to bet it's just a lower unit from an outboard bolted through the bottom of the hull with the cavitation plate flush with the bottom of the hull. There's probably a pulley on a cut down input shaft, and the shifter he had there is directly above the drive and connected to the shift rod for the gear change. This could be scaled up with something like a v-twin vertical engine (Honda, Predator, Kawi, Kohler, ect) and a bigger lower unit from an outboard with a similar HP rating to whatever engine you're using.

I grew up in South Louisiana and these kinds of boats were everywhere. Mostly they were wooden versions of a standard johnboat or aluminum flatboat and they were called Putt Putts. I did see a pirogue once set up that way which is similar to a canoe, but mostly flatboats. They were very common and this was in the late 60s and throughout the 70s. I've since moved. They were cool back then and I love seeing one again.

I was in a canoe once. I swore to God that if I got out of it alive that I'd never get into any watercraft that I couldn't stand up and pee out of.

I may have a guy feeling from hanging a little far over the top plank but it looks like the majority get completely hooked on the exhaust and follow you around until they get a bit or become so exhausted they just hop in your boat. An excellent bit of kit. Peace.

I see the dog is the pilot! My favourite shot is at 9:33. The canoe is pretty quick for 5.5 hp! I think I might ad a lightweight removable shroud over the engine area (I'd worry about that vertical uncovered air filter) and perhaps the other uncovered areas - in case of rough weather...sort of like a large kayak...with a hole for the operator...? Anyway, BRAVO!
