This was a club trip on the River Spey.
From Loch Insh to Spey Bay - 110 Km long over three days paddling and three nights camping.
Fantastic three days on the water, long, but great fun.

Watched a couple of Spey canoe trips & i absolutely love the look of it but at the same time feel intimidated. Lots of the content make it look very Hollywood & crazy but this video has a more calming approach & don’t feel quite as intimidating. Your content is very inspiring to me as a new paddler. Great vid! Thank you 👌

Great Trip Great Video & Clips and more importantly everybody got back safe & Safety in numbers. I was a little surprised that you half wore your “Dry Suit” probably the most dangerous way to wear it if you get a dunking in a currant, when everything below potentially could fill with water, also at the start your canoe showed a hard hat which some of your team used, but you never used it in any of the rapids. I know you have lots of experience and I’ve watched a number of you clips and you have demonstrated good safety practices. So at what point would you decide to use the safety items.

Hey there, thanks for watching the video, I’m glad you liked it. Good spot and good to shout those points out. For me on that trip there were a few factors regarding the dry suit. The levels were low with day one, a gentle paddle. There were a couple of grade 2s on days two and three. I only wore the dry suite to offer some protection from a shallow water wading point of view. Because the water levels were low and we had heavy boats I had anticipated I would be jumping in and out the water to pull the boat or help others, which was the case. It was too warm to pull the whole suit on. So that was the reason for that. Yes, there are risks but I didn’t envisage a spill and swim. There were no swims on the trip so, for me it was a good decision. The helmet. From my point of view, to match what I said above, I didn’t envisage a spill so didn’t wear it. Yes, I took my helmet, but decided not to wear it. Also, for me, as I wasn’t really using a kneeing thwart and as I was sitting on the seat at the back, I would have fell in and not inverted (like a kayak). It’s a risk, and I used judgement, experience and what others were doing. Some did switch to wearing a helmet, there were a couple of times I did put it on, as the leaders called for it (that’s not in the video) but for most of the trip I didn’t wear it. Fantastic video! The sounds were so lovely, the birds and the water. How did you find from your normal one night camp overs to two nights?

Amy thanks for that, I'm so glad you enjoyed it... the birds and water was so AMSR that I never added music to a lot of it. Yeah, logistically there was more food / water to take, the rest of the kit was the same. The weather was very kind in that there was one night with a light shower that sent us all to our tents. Overall I enjoyed the three nights camping. Let Mya Moo see it xxx

What a glorious river! I’m jealous. The map was a nice touch, again-liked the dotted line. (I’m not a cartography nerd, I promise!) You eat pretty damn well for a river rat! 😉 I was thinking, as you went through some of the rapids, how fun it would be to have a split screen of the view from your perspective looking forward downriver, and another facing you showing your paddlework. (Me and my damn suggestions…) Hardly necessary, though, as this video was fantastic. Well done, again, James!! I was reminded of a canoe trip I took with two friends years ago, when I was busy lashing everything down and making it all just so, and they just threw stuff into their canoe at random and fussed at me to hurry up and get on the river. I told them I would catch up. Very first bend in the river, they hit a log, and their stuff went all over the river, and they were cursing and picking up their stuff as I glided quietly by, pretending not to notice. Didn’t say a word. 🤣 River trips are the best! Cheers!
