Story of my life, I'm quite a bit late to this dance. But my used Mark III is scheduled to arrive Monday. I cannot WAIT. Really like your candor about things. I'm only a serious hobbyist, nowhere near a pro. But, I'm turning 60 soon, and this was my present to myself...

We got a couple of 1DX Mark III's at work. Holy smokes I love those bodies. I've watched this video like 15 times now, and I have to say that you make a very good point about the robustness of the 1D line, and the fact that they just work. Yeah. Very excited for the next 10 years of using the crap out of these two bodies for work projects.

Very welcome and stoked you got something from it. If you’re even tempted, mark III will be a massive improvement in a lot of aspects over mark 1. I noticed a big jump in dynamic range and other similar characteristics going to the 2 and this is even a little more refined.

Yes!!!! I DO have a question! I'm a former 1Dx Mark II camera user and sold it a while back, so now I don't have any camera. Like you I also started out with the 1D Mar IV after the 5d Mark II. I mostly do outdoor portraits. I'm about ready to buy a camera and I can't decide between the Leica SL2 or the 1Dx Mark III. If you had to choose only one camera which would it be?
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
R5 would be my pick for doing portraits and things remotely related to that. High resolution, incredible eye tracking with the best colors and the RF 50 1.2 & 85 1.2 are incredibly sharp and beautiful. Leica is amazing but man is it expensive and the 1DX mark III is great too but not my favorite portrait camera, heavy and lower resolution and the advantages (speed and high iso) aren’t really necessary.
@SnapJimmy

After watching this review, I’m trying to decide between 1DX Mk3 and R5. I most shoot photos and not much video. I usually shoot events, so very dark places and people moving fast. With my 6Dii, 5 out of 10 shots are blurred & can’t use them. If money is not an issue, which one do u think is better?
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
So I plan to do a more thorough review of the R5 and also a comparison between the two. If we’re talking people dancing/walking fast then the R5. If we are talking NFL pass routes, the 1DX mark III. But I’ll say the R5 is kind of incredible. Especially for everything but D1/professional sports. Pretty happy with ISO performance. Obviously mark III is better but R5 is pretty amazing and has a lot of other pros. Personally I’d say R5 for what you’re describing and the 28-70 F2 would never come off that camera

Great review! It far more reassuring to hear a positive opinion from a PRO. You were talking about face/head tracking in the OVF ... can you please tell how good is the focus accuracy (both in AI servo and one shot)? Does it make mistakes, does it lose focus and tracking in low light? Thanks!
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
No system is ever perfect. So yes. Like any camera at times it misses. Having wide aperture lenses always helps as they let more light into the AF system. I find the focus accuracy to be better than the mark II. By how much I’m unsure but it’s noticeable. Also the people tracking is awesome. I find it very useful and again has a high success rate. Like I said though every system I’ve used (included mirrorless) miss sometimes.

My only dissatisfaction with my current 1 D X Mark II and my previous 1 D X bodies is the rubber around the tripod mount. It's not the best design and on my first 1 D X Canon CPS had it replaced beacause it started to come loose. Canon should have used a border lip around the tripod mount metal to secure the rubber. Other than that I love these bodies. Great review.

Fantastic camera. I only used it briefly but own the R5 which is almost exactly the same operationally (speed, AF, etc). If you’re shooting sports full time the 1DX mark III has an edge for sure. It’s much easier to track action with and in my opinion my timing on peak action is much better on the 1DX mark III. If you’re using it for all around photography I’d say the edge is much smaller if at all there. Obviously not as physically durable being the biggest difference. But ports/high end options will be more available on the mark III as well

Always enjoy your observations, Brett. My 1DX3 was delayed by Covid-related supply chain issues and only arrived in April after all sports were cancelled here. Meanwhile, I'm still waiting on my pre-ordered R5. I think the two bodies will complement each other wonderfully for the type of work I do and I think (although I'm open-minded) that I'll still prefer the OVF for sports action. I'm also keeping my 1DX2 body (I sold my 7D2) because it's such a freakin' workhorse.

Right!! I too like the OVF more. So far. Maybe I’ll change my mind years from now. But still prefer it heavily. The R5 and 1DX 3 go great together. hey mate just discovered your channel... great stuff. Regarding the 1dX3... planning to do some wildlife & nature work. I had the 1D MArkIV so I a am used to these bodies... I don't know yet if I should go for the R5 or DX3... I mean... 20 megapixels even though enough... I think is shortening me for possible big prints... also the IBIS in the R% is insane amazing... which I think is a plus for wildlife. Recently chatting with a well known photographer that like me is involved big time in conservation & wildlife... was switching to Nikon due to better dynamic range... (actually I have to say I think Sony's latest mirrorless are insane good with dynamic range as well...). What do you think about this points...? thank you in advance mate!
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
First off I do no wildlife haha. But, I’m with you that I’d want the high resolution for bigger prints/more cropping possible. In addition to that having mechanical 12 FPS that’s extremely quiet seems like a big win to me (of the R5) especially combined with eye tracking AF etc. there are scenarios where the 1DX3 has an edge (in my opinion) but those are pretty small depending on your usage and I mostly find them when shooting NFL or similar speed things

I'm so torn with keeping the 1DX Mark II and the R5 together...or selling the 1DX Mark II while it still holds a nice chunk of equity and going all in on the R5/R6 combo and not looking back. It's hard to part ways with the 1D and watching this video was like listening to a guardian angel and the devil on each shoulder! haha I've worked in plenty of conditions where the 1DX has virtually been essential to accomplishing the job reliably as a professional. But when I look back...that's realistically only a few times a year and I tell myself that I could just rent a Mark III for those gigs and power through everything else with an R5/R6 combo. But now that I watch this video it reminded me that I can practically take on any job in the world because I own the 1DX Mark II and not rely on renting equipment for it - we work so hard to get to that point and I may be taking a small step back in that regard. Next weekend is the ultimate test for me when I fly out to cover our third post-COVID drag race and throw the R5 into the fray of all-day shooting in various temperatures, multiple magazine shoots, event coverage, and a whole lot more. The plan was to bring the 1DX as a backup one last time if things go well...but damn, you bring up some extremely valid points...and it would be my last OVF DSLR in my collection.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
I completely relate. OVF is so clutch to me personally. That being said I haven’t shot action with this and friends that have love it or at least like it. Personally I’ve already got the RF lenses might as well stick with the 1DX 3 for a few years longer unless I cut sports out majorly. At the end of the day the R5 is a weather sealed professional body too, but as you know not much compares to the 1D in durability.

@@BrettCarlsen I don't know why people don't seem to talk about it, but adjusting your eye to an EVF in low light then moving off the eyecup to the real world can be wonky sometimes. LOL At races, my eye is against the camera for hours and I don't know how this will work out for extended periods of time, especially in low light when my right eye has been looking at a screen for hours and my left eye has been shut the majority of the time. I'll probably be walking into stuff! Haha The only action my R5 has seen so far is using it to track my little dog at the dog park basically every single day as I test all my EF lenses on it. Man oh man...this is one impressive camera with that animal eye AF, Brett. Can't wait to actually challenge it on 200+mph cars next week. Yeah, I feel like I'm really only losing out on the tank-like build quality. But, unlike you, I do t have the threat of a 300lb NFL player crashing into me. I might be OK.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
Right? The EVF are good and that aspect bugs me but the inherent lag is more my problem personally. It will always be slower than light haha. I bet the larger tracking zones will be so good on drag cars. And the resolution will be amazing with all that detail.
@kevindiossi
@kevindiossi 3 жыл бұрын
@@BrettCarlsen the lag is certainly a significant improvement over the original R, but the real world is always better. In E-shutter it's magnificent, but there is mild distortion, we'll see how that...pans out. (Pun intended) I know some of your colleagues have already expressed concern over slightly misshapen foosballs and vertical lines, but that might not impact what I do at all. I can't wait to figure out which AF method to use. Always fun to learn the ins and outs of new gear. The resolution is going to be gnarly for me because we're using my photos for our advertisements, banners, and billboards. At 20mp, I didn't have too much flexibility with cropping for some images. I'm thinking 45mp in CRAW will open up a lot of possibilities moving forward. The buffer on this camera legitimately blows my mind. I was honestly just hoping for 40-60 images of buffer and I'm getting over 180 RAW photos?! Insane.

Hey man.... Why do you prefer to assign AF-ON button to do the focusing for you ? Why not the Shutter release button to do both ?
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
I explain this a bit in the R5 AF video but basically more control. Have used it for 10+ years now. You can choose when AF is on or off separate from when you make the picture. In turn I have more control of the timing. If you do it the other way you’re trying to get the camera to focus and initiate shutter with one finger and I find that to be not as good. That being said everyone has different likes and dislikes. Though I’ve never ever met another photojournalist/sports photographer that uses shutter button for AF so a lot of us prefer this, but definitely many in other fields use it the other way.

Really important as a pro to get stuff back fast. (Cont’d)...

I like matching cameras. So personally if you can swing it I’d do two higher end matching. I personally use a C200 for video and love it so I rely less heavily on these cameras for video. R5 is sick too. Just got that. More of a stills camera as well though. For me using them for a mix I like (and 0% regret) 2x 1DX Mark III bodies. Just always work and hold about 50-60% of their value over 4 years. So when you upgrade you aren’t screwed. Whatever you choose I’d say consider a full time video camera. Either what’s out now or what might be coming soon. So many amazing options, again I’d match brand/color science as it’s nice being able to match C-Log to C-Log etc.
@kelb89
@kelb89 3 жыл бұрын
@@BrettCarlsen I considered a video camera, but I think the size is the biggest factor for me as it isn't as portable. The majority of my work comes as a wedding videographer, so for a run and gun situation, it would be fairly problematic especially because of the setup times. My a7sii's have been amazing and I've built my career off of it, but the color science is a little brutal, albeit they rectified it to a degree with the a7siii, especially considering they now have 10-bit. Photography maybe comprises 15% of my work and see it creeping up to 20% this and next year. Right now, it's mostly sports-related (weightlifting, baseball) and occasional food photography. It's a little annoying having to switch lenses to match the appropriate body when I'm doing both photo and video in the same day, and it slows down my workflow. a7s iii is definitely an amazing camera, but it not being a hybrid camera kinda ruins it for me. R5 is also great and would have been a no brainer, but man did that overheating seal the deal.

I was wondering if we would have an update about this camera. I was going to type out a more on-topic response, but all I can think about is "what does he keep looking at....". I think I am going to have to watch this video again to fully absorb the information.

Dudeeee I know. I’m still trying to get the hang of this talking to a wall thing. It’s my camera monitor just to the side. Felt like a dummy as I edited this

Nice review SIr. Canon should give us animal eye focusing in next firmware update .
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly in live view that could happen. Unsure about in optical viewfinder. Animal eye tracking is available on the R5 which is why I say it should be possible in live view

I agree. I find live view works great on this camera and I use the human face tracking quite a bit

The card that failed? (Been a while since I watched this video) but if that’s the question it was a prograde. I say the name because the replacements have since failed so I’m pretty done with them.

@@BrettCarlsen oh, when I first got my 1dx3 I bought 2 120gb prograde cards but to my surprise they were fast enough so I went back to lexar cards
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m not a fan of prograde. Bought more Sandisk cards and haven’t had any issues at all. I’d put lexar on the same plane as Sandisk in quality. Good to hear they work for you.
