Yeah, good info. As a 1DX MkI shooter, I can say one would hardly be disappointed with either camera. I have had my 1DX all over the world. While I care for my gear, I can also be quite demanding of them too. The 1DX has never let me down. I've even taken it on a 7-day safari without a backup camera (I do NOT advise this at all!), and it really took the beating I gave it in some really harsh conditions. The autofocus is extremely impressive, and the frame rates are more than adequate (for me).

I have the 1dx, 1dxii and 5dsr, and obviously use both for very different reasons. I find the image quality on both the 1dx's to be very noticeable against the 50mpx (obviously), but can't tell the difference between the others. I almost prefer the first edition for its colour rendition. Dynamic range and low light are marginally better on the two of about a stop, but again nothing considerable to warrant paying double. I suppose the only real difference is the autofocus, but I'm still an old fashioned centre point shooter.

I opted for 1-DX mark 1 because of price. £639 from MPB with less than 31k clicks was to good a price to turn down. The extra's that come with a 1dx mk II wouldn't really benefit me especially for the extra cost so I'm happy with my purchase. Nice explanation of the differences between the 1 and mk2.

Thanks for this! Both bodies are actually on my wish list at KEH. They may be not quite state-of-the-art, but then again, neither am I! 🙄 There's no doubt that either one would be perfectly good for a serious hobbyist like myself. Hmmm... I have a milestone birthday coming up in just a few days...

@@joewhitnallphotography Actually, I decided to treat myself and got a used 1DX Mark III! It's probably complete overkill for me (I currently use an EOS 300D that I've had since 2003, as well as a 20D and a 7D). However, I thought and thought and though about it and finally rationalized: How many times am I going to turn 60? It should be here on Monday, and then the fun begins! I'll probably retire the 300D with honors, as it owes me nothing, and then have the other 3 bodies in my bag with a variety of lenses.

Might be a good idea to wait for the R1 so the used market prices will hopefully adjust with all the top line bodies on sale. But do look around anyway, one might grab a bargain

I picked up a high shutter count 1DX for around $480 USD. I do still plan on getting a MK II sooner or later, but as you said, while the MK II is better, the first generation is still a better value at the moment. Appreciate the video, I feel like a lot of people have made and are making this same decision with the prices of these bodies these days.

I'm scheduled to buy a used 1DX with the 80-200 f2.8 for $500, this coming Friday. How's your experience been with it so far?

@@jjrodriguezcuevas It's probably my favorite camera to use overall, the controls and the responsiveness are better than anything else I have, as well as the consistency of the autofocus performance. As far as the image quality, I have a D850 as well, which obviously has a lot more resolution, but when images are viewed at the same size I don't really see a substantial difference in high ISO performance. I also prefer the results from the Canon sensor when the subjects are people. As far as the Canon 80-200, that's quite an old lens at this point, and I don't prefer the push-pull design, but assuming you're getting one in good condition it's still a solid performer optically. You won't get the full performance of the 1DX's af vs one of the latest usm lenses though.

how high was the shutter count? i found almost similar price but its already at 600k+.

450k, up to nearly 480 now. Even at 600k I would say it's a good value, but my intent with this camera was basically to use it until it dies and not neccessarily repair or replace anything, since that would kind of defeat the purpose of getting one so cheap.@@malayneum

Thanks for the interesting comparison. I own a 5d mark III since 2012 and I'd like to step in the 1dx world: I'm still deciding whether to go with Mark I or Mark II. My only concerns ar about autofocus performance: are there big differences between the two? Also is the new viewfinder information display so better in the Mark II? thanks!

The AF is slightly faster in the mkii for sure but tbh unless your a pro I don't think it would ever be a noticeable difference

Another great video …the mark ii and mark 1 are not so much different and the mark iii is a small leap in still’s …as far as buying the Mark ii now for $3k new…I would buy it…do I think a )5k mirrorless camera is the way to go such as the R3, I say “NO” .. just my opinion, it’s not perfected..Canon like other companies are rushing to get it out the door so people will buy it…I even heard the R1 is coming in at 8k…doesn’t impress me

I do love the 500f4, ive gone mirrorless but I still take it on my R3s on occasion, but mainly use the 300, but I do love the 1dxmki, ill never sell it

I got little confused about batterys technically they are not the same but on some forums online there was info that m2 battery(lpe-19)can be used in place m1(LP-E4N) but not the charger . I was looking into 1dx Mi but concern about batteries. I see that LPE-19 is used on 1dx mii and canon still using them on mirrorlessons .

I tested this of someone else not long ago and you can use the newer battery in the mk 1 1dx without issue

Thanks for the upload, interesting... so since you used these a bit longer now, do you think there is any reason to pay extra for the 1dxii if you shoot stills only, or not? What is your take today on this million dollar question today?😅 I am about to buy a body for a wedding, and I can not make up my mind.... Tnx mate

Personally the AF is slightly faster on the mkii and you feel it more going back to the mki but the mki image quality is still there!

I tried to find out from various videos on KZfaq discussing the 1DX MKII. Looking to find out the focus performance at night, because my current job is sports photography which is mostly done at night with little light outdoors, does the 1dx mkii have good focus performance in low light?

Its personally nothing I've really needed to test so haven't really got to much to comment on the subject, What I will say though is I have used this alot in low light as 12,800 iso and got some very useable images and not really seen any issues with the AF performance

I had a 1Dx ..A mistake i made was buying a 1Dx II i could not see any major benefit of buying th dxII. I should have just bought another 1Dx

Thats a shame! It's definitely a small difference but it felt like the AF was slightly quicker to me

@garyanderson5609 Hey, as I just mentioned to Joe, I am about to shoot a wedding and can not make up my mind if I should go MK1 or MK2, is there any noticable difference in ISO above 1600, or is it pretty much the same? Worth paying the extra for MK2, or just wasting money?

I bought a 1DX mk1 in good condition for under £400 these cameras are workhorses the shutter count is just under 1 million the camera is going strong I believe you can have the shutter replaced by canon ata cost.

@@joewhitnallphotography Thanks for the fast response. How would you compare the 1dx mkii vs a modern mirrorless camera for birds in flight? I currently for example own the sony a7rv + 200-600 and this combo is fairly good as i get 50-60% keeper rate in bad light and around 95% in good light with birds in flight. It's not that i would get a 1dx mkii for myself but for my best buddy who now struggles with his 6Dii and a Tamron SP 200-500 with no IS for birds in flight. Do you think that the 1Dxmkii can be a valid alternative vs a mirrorless for him paired with a better lens?

@@zampination yes it would be, ive used the 6dii and the 1dx mki and mkii, now use a F3, I used to get keeper rates on both the idxs of around 70% low light and 90% good light, for in flight shots, a second hand 100-400l series would be a good choice for your mate
