I took my Canon 7D and my Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS L lens to North Cave Wetlands to photograph some birds. The day wasn't the best ill admit but it was still nice to get out with the camera and chill out with some bird photography for a couple of hours.

Just getting into photography love the way you make it sound so simple. I have a 40d with an 85 to 250 lens would love a 7d and a 100 to 400 lens. Keep it up Chris I'm learning slowly from you thank you

The 40D is a good little camera. I believe it was the high end crop body when released. The 100-400 is a great lens and I am lucky to have such lenses but the (I assume you meant) 55-250 is a cracking lens in its own right and probably a fraction of the weight. Don’t worry about gear and just have fun.

great video as always Chris, I was doing my quarterly battery charging of all the cameras i own and its a lot, i came across my canon 7d with 100-400mm lens and decided to search on KZfaq for some content and yours came up, i purchased this about 2010 and used it for about a year before i decided to go full frame with the canon 5d mkIII & sigma 150-600mm so now i going to remissness and spend a day with it over my local wetlands weather permitting.. thanks :)

I started my photography hobby in 2019 with a used Canon 7D and a 50mm F2.8 for just $250! I was instantly hooked and have since upgraded just a couple times :P 7D>80D>90D>R>R5

As a newbie, I just bought a 7D with its starter kit lens and a Tamron AF 70-300mm. I aim to do some landscapes and wildlife. I live in a rural area of North Wales, next to the coast and been following ya videos all week. I really enjoy that you're doing content on an oldie but goldie camera like the 7D and I like how you explain your settings behind each shot. I've defo been taking some notes and looking forward to putting them to use. (My camera arrived today actually but still waiting on my tripod!!)

Thanks for the comment. I assume you got the 18-55mm kit lens? It’s not a bad little lens if that’s the one you got. Sounds like you have a good spread of focal lengths there for landscape and wildlife. I made the decision a while back that KZfaq is full of the latest and greatest that nobody can afford so I wanted to show you don’t need to spend thousands to have fun.

@@ChrisBaitson Indeed its the 18-55mm kit lens. Been rocking it today (admittingly mostly in auto mode but we all gotta start somewhere), Really had a lot of fun spending 3 hours down my local beach testing it out and I'm really happy with results of the lens. Yeah, theres a lot of stuff out there on getting into photography, it can be off-putting. I grabbed a 7D, cannon 18-55mm, tamron 70 -300mm, Lens hood, cannon timer remote controller, a tripod and some AI photo enchantment thing called Arsenal (which sounds a bit naft to be honest and would rather just learn it myself, So haven't touched that) I bagged all of that for £405 and majority of it is in a like new condition. I skimped out on the tripod as just starting out and was pushing my budget, hopefully won't be to much of an issue for learning. Keep up the good work! 👍

Nice little vid mate. I comment as a birder who photographs. It shows that common birds are good subjects and the detail in the feathering is nice. Tree Sparrows are decidedly uncommon these days and your portrait of one is excellent.....

No Rat Roll, mate? I'm gutted :) You've now got the setup I'd love to have, but I can't get the 100-400. Keep them coming, I'm enjoying your foray into wildlife photography :)

It’s been enjoyable but back to the landscapes tomorrow. Everything I went to see there yesterday wasn’t there. Including the rats. The coast is calling me back now though.

Great videos Chris. Informative, clear and concise. Those robin and sparrow photos are simply amazing. How much success have you had with that setup handheld as its supposed to be really heavy? I'm waiting on a 100-400 (version 1) to come in the post so can't wait to pair it with my 7d mkll. I have the version 1 of the 1.4x extender too so that should be interesting. Cheers. Gerry.
@ChrisBaitson

The pairing works really well but it is a heavy lens. I find it best to turn the tripod collar upside down and use it as a handle. The Mark 1 is what I have. Just watch out for it sucking dust in - but it is easy to clean out.

I’m going to look at a Mkii of both the camera and the lens next year. Wildlife isn’t something I do too much of but I do enjoy it when I have a go. Thanks for watching Dave and I appreciate the comment.

Great video. I have the same camera and lens combination, but only acquired the Mk1 IS lens last month. I’ve tried some shots of birds, however think they’re quite soft images. I’ve started upping the shutter speed, which has helped. What focus mode and metering settings are you using? Thanks.
@ChrisBaitson
@ChrisBaitson 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob. You really want to be up around 1/1000th territory for birds and I often just leave auto iso on. The 7D isn’t too bad at handling noise but remember at 400mm it’s not a fast lens at all. I use servo focus mode on the 1D & 7D and on the 7D the AF is set to the 9 centre points. Metering is usually just left at evaluative. The lens is razor sharp really but at long focal lengths I can see why you might find it soft. Just up the shutter speed. It’s a sunny day lens if that helps.
@robmilligan3650
@robmilligan3650 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisBaitson great, thanks. I’ll go higher on the shutter speed. Can’t guarantee the sun being in Ireland!

@@robmilligan3650 Yeah you’ll get all the weather off of the Atlantic won’t you. Long lens and wildlife is all about shutter speed but the lens having IS does make life so much easier. Heavy old setup isn’t it!

Hi Chris, what settings do you use in Manuel or Shutter priority for this type of photography. been watching your videos for a bit now and bought a Canon 7D recently too.
@ChrisBaitson
@ChrisBaitson 2 жыл бұрын
Usually it’s in shutter priority with the shutter about 1/1000th and auto ISO turned on. I like to keep things nice and simple. Thanks for watching Danny. The 7D is a good little camera.

The AF isn’t bad but shows it’s age now. Tracks moving subjects reasonably well to get a good rate of sharp photos though.
