I've been extremely excited with the mirror-less takeover of photography because I can finally afford all the top of the line DSLR equipment that I've drooled over for the last fifteen years. I've bought a 7D and a 5D Mark II in the last two years and plan to add a 5D Classic and 6D to my gear in the next couple of years, with the glass I already own I'll be set for gear for years to come.

I've used a 7D for stills for over a year now and have a few suggestion to those that are new to this particular body: 1) use ETTR to minimize vertical banding in your image, which can be noticeable on solid color backgrounds like a blue sky- I use "blinkies" and keep an eye on my histograms 2) the better the lens, the better your IQ bc this body can produce surprisingly great IQ for a 10 year old design- I've used a 50mm EF STM, a 24mm EF-S, a 15-85mm EF-S, 55-250mm EF-S STM, and a Sigma 100-400mm and all, especially the primes, make great images 3) read/watch tutorials on both the terrific AF system, as well as incorporating back-button focus into your shooting, and 4) avoid high ISO- strong noise resides at ISO 3,200 and beyond.

Absolutely love my 7D. Bought for 279 bucks with under 2,000 shots on it and a 6 month warranty to boot! I had one before and liked it a lot, but the lens I had at the time wasn't the best as it turns out, it wasn't the sensor like I thought. I was using a 70-300mm USM II. I just didn't get the sharpness and "snap" I was looking for. Fast forward to current times - I had purchased a 200mm f2.8L prime lens and decided to give the 7D another try. OH MY what a difference this lens change made. It is permanently glued to my 7D and I could not be happier. Sure, if I had lots of expendable $$ I'd have bought a 90D or something, but I don't, and I'm not afraid to use older gear. The 7D feels so solid and is heavy in a good way. Grip is amazing and I feel like it is so robust I don't have to worry about bumping it here and there as I sling it around. I take it everywhere I go - including nearly daily on a kayak. You never know what you are going to see and when you will see it, so it is always on and ready to fire. Great burst rate, focus speed - coupled with my 200mm, it is fast and fantastic.

@@JustinMyersPhoto Yes, the lenses sure do - I agree 100%. I am pretty much totally outdoors/wildlife/nature - pure hobby (obsession). Seldomfocused.com is my site and will give you an idea. I just post for family and friends, well, and personal satisfaction. It is kind of what I'd call a photography diary for me. We have a small cabin in the northwoods of Wisconsin, so I'm always at the ready and this is my favorite (cam/lens) combo I've ever had. I think I'll keep my eyes open for a good priced 1.4x teleconverter to stick on it - as 200mm isn't enough of here a lot of times - but the 18MP sensor on the 7D crops really really well! I have read the 2x degrades a fair amount and really slows down focus, and with no IS, I think anything beyond 1.4x would be a bit rough. I do use extremely high shutter speeds by default - and the 2.8 is simply perfect for that.

@@JustinMyersPhoto Thanks Justin and thanks for putting this video together - very nicely done. I think if a lot of people could get over the mental hurdle of having the latest or close to, they'd be stunned at what they could do by giving formerly high-end older gear a try. And like you said, good glass most often makes the biggest difference of all. Of course I am talking about stills photography here - I know nothing about video, other than I have access to high quality video on my 7D if I want or need it.

I did the opposite, I had an M5 and then bought a 7D. The M5 is great for landscape shots (and for everything that's not moving), but it has a very disappointing continuos af. The 7d on the other hand lacks dual pixel and a tilting screen, but it's still an amazing camera today. A little help from Topaz Denoise Ai and high iso noise is not a problem anymore.

I loved watching this! After I had an EOS 300D for over 20 years (and almost exclusively on full-auto), a friend of mine in the UK who is an expert photographer recommended a few things to me. I bought a used 20D and then a 7D, with the battery grip. (A used 1DC Mark III should be showing up tomorrow.) Even with just a few weeks of experimentation, I can see the differences in the quality of my shots. I still have a long way to go both in really learning the hardware and in really learning about my settings, but it's a journey I'm eager to make!

I was working at a camera store when the 7d came out and I remember the waves it made with the 24fps HD video, one of the first video capable DSLRs. I was on the telescopes side of the business and a Nikon guy because I inherited Nikon stuff in 1992 from my uncle so I wanted a camera that would work with those lenses albeit manual only. This was before video, in 2006 I bought a Nikon d50 and that was my only DSLR, and I bought many more lenses, AF and AF-D on eBay and later the current 50 1.8 and 1.4 and the neat 35mm 1.8 Gdx lens. So almost everything I owned was stolen in a series of thefts from storage and vehicle break ins right when I was becoming homeless, which lasted for 18 months of non glamorous, 10 mile radius van life. I had been taken down notches to living on a disability income.and finally got housing 11 months ago. I spent stimulus money and savings mostly on replacing my telescope equipment and some music equipment so I could play in a band again (I had one amp and a handful of instruments in pawn shops so that aspect of my life was not completely shut down like astronomy, photography and audio engineering (with my own gear) were. I had resigned myself that photography and astroimaging would be shut down for the foreseeable future. Last week I happened upon a Fuji XT-1 body that was apparently an old store demo that ended up in this little neighborhood discount store dealing in overstocks. I got it for $225 body only and knew I was going to have to spend money on a lens but could use it for astrophotography as soon as the T mount I ordered arrives. But I really wanted the video capability as well as being a decent camera. Within a day I see a 7D with an 18-55 and a 70-200f4 L USM (ended up having an internal lens chip but he says it seems to be fine), with a bag, filters and a flash for $375 on a Facebook astronomy buy/sell group. After talking on the phone he offered it for $325 shipped and I am about to call him up to finalize the sale so he can get it out to me today. I saw another video from the UK where he got his for 180£ but body only, and another with battery grip for £200 , I don't know the exchange rate but I estimate around $300 as well so I think I am getting a pretty decent deal. I was originally going to get the 7D with his rebel XTi and another 18-55, 75-300 and another bag for $550+sh but after thinking on it I backed out of that really fast because I didn't want such a lowly old low end camera with no live view or video, and a cheaper feel than my D50 which was between a rebel and a 20d as far as camera levels go (the D40 was down to the level of rebel), as well as being a camera that sells for $125 used with 18-55 and a 75-300 is also a cheap lens so it wasn't that great of a deal anyway. I miss my D50, and my stash of Nikkor lenses, I guess the camera gods deemed I shoot canon and Fuji X mount from now on. My holding back on the Xti paid off because today on another astronomy site someone was practically giving away a 20D 18-55 kit, a 2nd 20D body that was astro modified (ir filter changed for more red response a-la the limited edition 20DA but minus the live focus mode Which was revolutionary at the time and surely was what paved the way for video DSLRs), as well as a clip in light pollution filter, 4 batteries and a DSLR astrophotography book, intervalometer remote and T ring for $250. After explaining why such a deal was perfect for my situation, he offered $25 off and I immediately shot off the PayPal. I have an associates degree in photography I finished in 97 or 98, and it would be nice to be able to take on the occasional photo gig, and do lots of personal photography, as well as be able to create as much video content as I like. I will still need to get a lens for the Fuji, which is pricey (recently was watching 2 and one went for just under 250 shipped and the other 290, 599 new and 350-400 grey market white box kit split), but maybe there are adapters that allow full function use of eos lenses on Fuji X mount? I'm excited to be back. The 20D was the prosumer equivalent of the D200 which was out when I got my D50, I am very familiar with this era of cameras, and they were out of my price range back then and I would still be using the d50 bad it not been stolen, but in 2012 I was seriosly considering trying to get a D7100 but that never materialized. Hopefully all 4 if these bodies and 3 lenses that just fell in my lap for $775 are all working properly and don't have crazy high shutter counts. I could only imagine what my D50 count was lol.

@@JustinMyersPhoto hopefully it pays for itself, just have to wait for covid to go away as I am not in the huge segment of the population that thinks it is a communist hoax. But I will start the astro right away, and since I was getting good moon video with cheap phones, the APS sensors with a variable eyepiece projection adapter should work well, otherwise I will have to try stacking my barlows or get some more expensive Telecentric extenders like televue powermate. Or just stick to deep space long exposures with the bodies. There is always something else you need to buy haha. I know this well I used to sell the stuff. The projection adapter and a bunch of other stuff arrives Tuesday I think. The EOS t ring is coming with the 2 20Ds and I just sent the payment for the 7D, very exited for the 70-200L, hopefully the internal lens chip won't cause too many issues, perhaps bright stars in a widefield image or bright streetlights might cause some difrraction/flare a la JJ Abrams star trek lol. Guess I need to order a skylight filter for it because the only 67mm filter coming is a ND, but there are a handful of 55mm filters coming with it and a canon bag and off brand flash thrown in as well. I checked EBay, 7Ds are cheap now, good to know. The 70-200 sealed the deal for sure since without that it would have been a ho hum deal, 18-55s are a dime a dozen, and the Nikon version was a better lens. I will probably need to get more batteries, think it just comes with one, but he got the camera without one so the one he bought for it should still be pretty good. Long exposures kill the battery fast so I had 4 batteries for my D50, rarely needed more than 2 for a regular shoot. I'm sure video drains as bad or worse than astro exposures. Is the 7D clip length limited like the Nikon D90 was? I think that was limited to about 5 minutes. I sold my friend one of those with the 18-200VR that had just came out, he made 3x what I made selling telescopes , as a software engineer. He got some video of my band with it but the sound was pretty bad. Thays why I wanted a D7100, adjustable audio levels and ability to plug in a Mic. I assume the 7D has adjustable audio levels, but I am not expecting it to handle concert levels like newer cameras and phones do. An iphone at a well mixed concert gets really good results. Hopefully there are still good shoe mounted external stereo mics like were available for the d7100, just going from memory here, haven't done the research yet. I think my Fuji X-t1 will likely be my main video camera, the 7D will be more for photo as well as multi camera video shoots, but I still have to sink money into a lens for that. Going to research if there are adapters for EF lenses that allow full function. Otherwise I will be mounting it to an 80mmf5 (400mm f5 in camera lens terms) achromat telescope haha. Not a fine optic, lots of chromatic abberation, 2 element crown/flint classic design.

Justin Myers I bought the 90d with the 18-135 kit lens. I got a 10-24 tamron wide angle, a nifty fifty, a 70-300 tamron and an 18-200. So while these tend to do the job, ive ended up with lenses that broadly do the same thing apart from the wide angle. Debating getting rid of most, keeping the 50 and going for a 24-70 f 2.8 as most seem to regard that as a good all purpose. It’s the research and what’s good for what that I find the most confusing. Thanks for engaging with me on this. Much appreciated.

@@JustinMyersPhoto Hi Justin, really helpful thank you. So what would you suggest as a good wide-angle lens (mid-range price) for the architecture, landscape and interior? And if you were doing a close up with blurred background of something like a funky door/window handle, a product detail (not macro just close) would you use the nifty fifty? I suppose the question that's always on my mind is , is one or two good lenses sufficient for my needs right now and look to change as I develop and needs change?

@@JustinMyersPhoto Thank you for your response, highly appreciated. I've been on a journey learning photography and a bit of video as one of my new interests/skillsets, and more often than not, the videos on youtube, which make me ask what camera was used, does tend to be a Canon, but I must say, its also more about the operator and their understanding of the tools and lighting and subject framing. But this was superb - the video quality, clear without being over the top digital. The SL2 captured a very lifelike image. I see you also use the 7D - so is it SL2 for video and 7D for photos, and what has replaced the SL2, if I may ask. Would an SL2 be as good as a 7D for taking photos? I'm trying to decide which will be my 1st Canon Camera (will be buying used - camera and lens). I'm coming from a Fuji Bridge camera (s6500fd) and a Nikon compact (L830). Wish to take advantage of higher quality lenses and larger sensors. Current options in mind are one of these Canons (10d if I am really nostalgic, 20D, 30D, 40D or 550D) to be my last semiprofessional camera while I test the waters and develop my skills. So trying to limit the budget. For now focused only on photography - one thing at a time.. My L830 - the Nikon does video ok enough for any casual thing I may do, for now. So video is not really a major interest in the acquisition. Which Canon or compatiible EF or EF-S fixed or zoom lens would you recommend for a beginner who does not want to spend much money yet still needs good results. Typically shoot nature at close distances, some landscape at about 85mm FF equivalent, clouds/horizon shots, buildings, street photos. My Fuji and Nikon, will cover the extremes of focal length for now, as these go from 22mm to 700+mm FF equivalent. So the canon lenses only need to cover regular fields of view like what the human view can capture i.e 28mm to bout 60mm FF equivalent. I'm pretty decided to get a Canon, sure other brands may have more options, but I like the whole ecosystem of Canon, support, availability everywhere in the world, reliability, and great lens choices from canon and 3rd parties, Definitely would like to hear your thoughts, and include these in my final decision making.

Still a very relevant and reliable camera. If the image is in tact i.e., crop-free, I think it's possible to produce 30" x 20" or even 36" x 24" prints. I regularly use this DSLR for wildlife photography and it never fails. Subsequently when I blow-up the processed images on my 4k TV in 36" x 24" sizes; they look outstanding. Hope to continue shooting this legendary DSLR, which I bought used recently, for as long as it keeps shooting. I'm not into videos so, least bothered how it performs in that area. BTW, this camera surpasses its rated shutter life by considerable margins.

The EOS 1D-Mk3 allows me to work at ISO 1600 with good results. That camera is still older than the EOS 7D and is NOT a full-frame Sensor at all. For private I'm working with my EOS 50D, which is quite simmilar to the EOS 1D-Mk3 looking at the High-ISO performance. So I know all about that. @@JustinMyersPhoto Thank's for your answer. I'm comfortable with a little noise in "dark-wedding" (never noticed that word before). For that ISO 1600 is ok using the 1D-Mk3. But - for example - the 1D-Mk2(N) is doing terrible noise under that condition ... but still usable at ISO 1000. I got my EOS 7D today ... for 225 $ (200 €) ... so I'll simply try out in a similar dark indoor situation next days. . The best thing I should do is to cary a couple of different bodies with me. Each body for its own request. I guess the EOS 7D will be a real good camera for general condition including Video. For "dark-wedding" (I like that word) I would prefer my EOS 1D-Mk3 or simply a full-frame like my EOS 5D-Mk2.

You’re not gaining anything in image quality, as the sensor and processor are pretty similar/same between the two. The 7D has a couple more auto focusing points in the viewfinder(11 vs 9) and they are all cross type (only the center point is cross type on the 550D). The 7D also can shoot photos at 8 fps vs under 4 fps on the 550D. Those are the main differences. I’d say if those two things are really important to you, you have to decide whether the price is worth those couple of features and a larger camera body. @@JustinMyersPhoto I still use the original 6D as my backup camera, but yeah, I've heard great things about the RP. If my 6D finally dies, I'll probably get one.

@JustinMyersPhoto Жыл бұрын
They are actually going to be very similar in image quality, with the same sensor. The main difference will be in performance, with the 7D having faster burst shooting and autofocus, as well as having weather sealing and a more rugged body. So, it really comes down to what you need for how you shoot. What kind of photography do you typically shoot?

You'll still see wildlife photographers using these in Alaska for National Geographic shoots. Its not a professional camera but pro-sumer grade. Weather sealed. Dust sealed. This isn't for beginners. It has far too many settings and modes for a beginner. I'm a professional photographer who owns the 7D. It is heavy and designed for sports, action and wildlife shoots. Paired with a Canon L series lens 70-200 IS ($1,400) and you have a nice setup for under $1,800. Do not listen to this KZfaqr about the lens he has. If you want a Prime Lens (50mm) get the nifty fifty (Canon, $80) for portraits that's your lens of choice. Also, Tokina has a wonderful Astrophotography lens for this camera (F 2.8 $400) can't go wrong. And the Sigma 10-22mm ($399) is a must have for wide angle shots.

I diagree a bit. If it's a lazy beginner, then no this is not a good camera for those individuals. However, I consider myself a beginner. I've used point-and-shoot cameras for a long time. This is a great camera to use when one is learning how to go fully manual. It is inexpensive and , as you mention, has a wonderfully built, weather sealed body. It has a huge range of lenses that one can slowly learn how to use and slowly acquire. It does force you to really understand settings because it can be unforgiving, especially in low light conditions. The point is, if you can't take a good shot with this camera you're not ready for shiny new lenses or a fancy new camera. It's also a great camera to have as a second camera. Once I upgrade I will never let this one go. And that's why it's a great beginner camera. I will keep it forever because it has grown with me. I think buying a bad "first" camera doesn't help with any tech. I was told my first dive computer was too "complex" for a beginner diver. Hogwash. I learned how to use it and it grew with me. Now that I'm diving to 100 m I still use THAT dive computer as a backup.

APS-C, CF Card, Screen, and age are a mjaor drawback. Probably not worth picking up. especially with the Canon EOS RP mirrorless full frame coming in it just over 1k making more professional recent DSLRs affordable. downward pressure on used market.

Not worth picking up a sub $300 dollar camera...just go buy a new one for $1000. Cool great advice 😂😂
@quickdiy8127
@quickdiy8127 5 жыл бұрын
These things are a trap though, oh the $300 camera is $300 and is the same as a $1000 camera right? But is it? You're buying someone else's problem that will likely net you a loss of more than $1000 over the short life cycle of obscelesnce. See if you don't have the $1000 making a $300 mistake won't help you with not having the $1000 you're just making another poor financial decision that put you in the spot that makes you not have $1000 in the first place. Aps-c is an entry level offering for a lens system that has been obsolete for 5+ years.....ef-s can't be put on an ef body, and ef is the prosumer grade. The new lenses are RF series. Ef-s lenses don't work with full frame mirrorless even with an adapter... you're just making poor decisions again Making you poor-er

@@JustinMyersPhoto Well, the way I see it, for $100 more you get the OPTION of shooting videos with dual pixel autofocus, flip screen, wifi, and more ISO. And for stills, you are not giving up much at all 1.1fps, so it's worth it.
