In this video, I'm doing a side by side comparison of two 85mm lens options: the Canon EF 85mm f1.4L IS USM lens and the Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM. I'm very personally invested in this comparison because I am currently searching and trying some different options of 85mm lenses to find out which one is going to be the best fit for me. So, I'm taking a look at how these lenses perform, the image quality and which lens might be a good choice for you if you are looking for an 85mm lens option. Save your money or go with the more expensive lens?

My 1.8 is 13 years old already... It went through heavy use. It's all scratched outside and dusty inside, but still produces sharp images at 1.8... One of the greatest Canon lenses for quality/price...

It is definitely a great value for its price point. So what type of photography and/or video do you typically shoot?
@robertmccutchan5450

I TOTALLY agree that this lens is one of the greatest values in Canon lenses! I rarely shoot wider than 2.8, so the 1.8 lens is more than adequate for me. My 85m 1.8 is freakishly sharp an whatever aperture I shoot at, even at 1.8. I can't see a reason to spend the money on the 1.4 or 1.2, because I would never shoot at those apertures. The next best lens is the 50mm 1.8. These two lenses are hands down the absolute best lenses Canon produces. They are very cheap and extremely high quality lenses.

Have you actually shot an objective test of the 1.8? I did recently and it wasn’t nearly as sharp as I thought it was. Not at full-body distances, at least

Great video and comparisons. I compared the f1.2 L to the 1.8 years ago and chose to go with the 1.8. Simply at the time for price and AF speed. Never have tried the 1.4, though I have thought about it. I use the 1.8 for most of my college basketball game and it's lights out amazing with AF speed and sharpness on the R6. I just use the EF to RF adapter and wow, for the price, its tough to beat. Ill probably rent the 1.4 and give it a shot though. It's also my fave lens for everyday shooting and wedding videos so im bias, ha! Have a great week!

Thanks! Ya, the f1.8 is a really great lens for the price! I actually didn’t even look into the EF 85mm f1.2L, because it just wouldn’t make sense for me personally. The f1.4L is very impressive though. Stick around if you’re interested in this, I’m still in the process of trying out and picking an 85mm

having used the EF 1.2, EF 1.4, and EF 1.8, the definite one to go with is the EF 1.4. the EF 1.8 was my first 85 mm ever and it was my first gorgeous introduction to 85 mm. It produced gorgeous images but when you compare it to other 85 mm, you start to notice the problems like color fringing. It's also not as sharp. But for a budget, the EF 1.8 is great. The EF 1.2 was so so hard for me to get sharp images. It can work great in the hands of a professional with portrait stills in controlled situations. But it's way too slow to focus for anything that isn't totally still. It also doesn't have stabilization like the EF 1.8. I was so disappointed in the EF 1.2 when I borrowed my friend's because I expected so much more at the cost of the lens. If I was better skilled, I would probably be much happier with it. The EF 1.4 is the perfect middle as it's gorgeous and sharp with fast focusing. It also has optical stabilization! Anyone can take fantastic photos with the EF 1.4. But having tried the RF 1.2, it's the king. Image quality is stellar and it's so fast to focus. This RF 85 1.2 is like autopilot of lenses. It's so hard to take bad photos with it. It doesn't have stabilization so it wouldn't be a good combo with the original EOS R. But with an R5 or R6, no other 85 mm tops it. I haven't tried the RF 85 mm 2.0 so I'm curious how it compares to the EF 1.8. Taylor Jackson raves about the Samyang RF 85 1.4, mostly because it's more practical (being cheaper and lighter). I'm curious about that lens but having the RF 1.2, you don't need to try lesser lenses.

Both of these 85mm lenses have the same minimum focus distance of 3 feet. So, you can’t get closer with one than the other, you will have to stay about 3 feet away with both of them about .87m)

I bought a cheap chinese MF 85mm f2 and the image quality for close-up pictures is absolutely outstanding. The picture quality for anything more than 5m away is not good at all... I bought the canon 85mm AF version which should arrive tomorrow. But in my opinion this lens is outstanding

Samyang/Rokinon 85 1.4 RF best bang for your buck. Very sharp, beautiful bokeh, the lens has character and it's pretty light on my R5. The af is fast for both photo and video. I haven't noticed any color fringing shooting backlit. I have shot with the RF 85 1.2L, the 85 1.4L EF and the 85 1.8 EF. I can recommend the Samyang without hesitation. It's definitely worth a look.

Hey there I would like to ask you about the AF field on screen as I have the R6 and you have the R5 I think you can help me out. Cause like with my Sigma 35mm f1.4 I can not use the 100% AF screen covered on my R6 only around 80% of the AF. With the Samyang/Rokinon is it the same or Do you have the 100% AF field in your R5? Thank you

@richardcollinsphotography1288 2 жыл бұрын
@@douglasmelo7212 I just checked and it doesn't cover the entire free if you use eye af it's probably like 90-95% of the frame. I never noticed it before. I never shoot near the edge of the frame but if you do then maybe pickup a native Canon brand RF instead. If you shoot portraits this is the lens to get.

Unfortunately there is some sort of legal thing going on and Canon stopped Samyang’s RF production, it concerns all third party lens manufacturers. The Samyang RF 85 1.4 is no longer available, nor the docking station for updates. IMHO not a wise decision of Canon more the exact opposite.

What’s your definition of “Micro Contrast “?
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 7 ай бұрын
Well, I don’t have my own definition, but microcontrast is the how well the lens shows inter-tonal differences between brighter to darker parts of the same or a very similar color
@chris0628
@chris0628 7 ай бұрын
@@JustinMyersPhoto isn’t that just contrast?
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 7 ай бұрын
@@chris0628 Not exactly. Contrast is the overall difference between tones and colors. Like blue can contrast to yellow, but variances between a solid blue object with different qualities of light across its surface would fall under micro contrast
@chris0628
@chris0628 7 ай бұрын
@@JustinMyersPhoto what you are referring to is dynamic range
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 7 ай бұрын
@@chris0628 no, dynamic range is the difference between the total lightest and total darkest part of an image. Usable dynamic range is more commonly a function of a camera’s sensor (when taking images that include very bright and very dark areas in a frame) and the optical capabilities of a lens don’t play much of role in usable / perceptible dynamic range (outside of framing the image).
