It's probably safe to say that for a beginner, hobbyist, or amateur, the EF-S STM version is the way to go. The extra features of the EF USM version won't be missed unless one has progressed quite far with one's abilities, including manually focusing and operation where a hood would be advantageous, or operating where one _needs_ image stabilization, full-frame users not withstanding. The EF-S STM version was the first brand new lens I ever purchased. I don't use it often, but when I do its lightness and unobtrusiveness makes for a good experience, especially if I don't want my subjects to get anxious seeing the camera come out.

Nice work, thanks. ...I tested my 24/1.4 L vs. 24/2.8 STM pancake vs. 24/2.8 setting on my 17-55/2.8 zoom EFS....the results were. Predictable with the $1600 lens best in colour, contrast & #sharpness. However! At f4 or 5.6 the differences shrunk to the point of being moot.

Used the 24mm stm on my 70D for like 4-5months. Best Focal length for Crop. Very Useful. And the IQ was quite nice too.

I've been using the Canon EF-S 24mm for 2 years in my travels with my Rebel T5 and has been fantastic. You can great boca and sharp images.

For me the pancake lens quality was terrible when shooting into the sun. After purchasing, I went out for the day and documented my trip. It was a beautiful day, but unfortunately most of what I wanted to capture was the same side as the sun so virtually all the images came out poor. The quality is fine when you have better control over the light, but I needed more all-round consistency.

One of the best reviews I have seen on KZfaq. I have used an older 24 mm for parties and casual use and it is a great width for a crop sensor. I have a pancake that I am going to try out extensively as a travel lens for its small size.

Is it suitable for fix object (using canon 1500D)? Hight - 2.5 meter Width - 1.75 meter Distance - maximum 3 meter Sharpness will be perfect both side of width

Does placing the EF lens on a APS-C camera reduce the field of view? Also, does the 1.6 multiplier apply to the aperture as well as the focal length?

The full frame lens do become cropped when using on APS-C cameras. And yes it affects the aperture by 1.6 as well.

Did the frame-shifting judder with the pancake happen even attached to a tripod? That's super annoying and would negate the advantage of having a silent STM motor :(

24mm USM is a full frame lens which you didn't mention and it will become a 39mm on a APS-S Crop Body.

They're both 38.4mm equivalent on an APS-C body.

24 mm is 24 mm.

@@okaro6595 Not really. Both are 38.4 on a crop sensor. Get a 50mm lens and you will see. You will be stepping back to get everything in the picture because it is 80mm focal length .

The USM is better in case of image-stability, but has a noice you can hear when using the internal microphone. In quiet rooms you might even hear the lens focus with an external microphone. The STM is better in case of focus sound, but has no image-stabilisation. This means you should use a tripod or a gymbal to not get shakey footage.
