A very exciting and fun lens to use, opening up a world of hand-holdable macro photography, even to beginners. I'm tempted to keep this lens now that I'm finished reviewing it but...I gotta save up for a new camera!

Absolutely love this lens. For photography it is exceptional and extremely versatile, but I will say for video the 50mm Equivalent FOV can be a little tight, and even with the IS on, your handheld footage can still end up extremely shaky. Despite that, I still recommend this as one of the best first general-purpose primes you can get for the Canon crop system. Excellent review as always.

Dear Christopher, I would be curious about your opinion: For a Canon M50, would you rather settle for a Canon lens EF-S 35mm 2.8 + adapter ring or a Canon lens EF-M 28mm 3.5 ? Many thanks for your kind answer.

FINALLY!! This is totally unrelated but I recently found your videos and it’s been bugging me that your voice sounds so familiar to a voice I’ve heard before on a movie except a male version, I knew it was from Harry Potter but I couldn’t think of who it was until now. It was Luna Lovegood, you have a gentle and soft voice like hers, just deeper. Yeah it’s random but I needed to say it! And btw nice videos too!

Not too many reviews on this lens but its honestly one of my favorite. Some of my shots are hit and miss but i'm pretty sure its user error. Overall it's very sharp and fast. I also like the 35mm focal length. Nothing but good to say about this baby.

Chris, this isn't a wide angle macro lens because of the 1.6 APS-C crop you get a field of view of 56mm. The 35 IS plus the 10-18 IS make a great hiking kit with my 70D.
@Kinematographer
@Kinematographer 10 ай бұрын
I bought one for my 7d a while back but got carried away with vintage glass on my 5d mkii.. but...finally took it out. As its like a 56mm on an aps-c it's surprisingly useful. Just as a normal "nifty fifty" it's really very good very very fast autofocus. And as you always have the option of macro it becomes extremely practical quickly. And it's probably the lens my camera meters the best with. Also the macro light allows for a lot of tricks in low light. The IS means you can keep it open in lower light probably by a stop or two. I find the image quality absolutly superb. For depth of field it wins as you can get so close! I find I rarely shoot anything over 2.8 anyway so this doesn't seem like a limitation on this lens. Oh..God got mentioned :/ it was going so well..

Diffraction sets in earlier close up because at 1:1 the effective aperture is 2 stops smaller. At 1:2 it is one stop smaller. It's also why diffraction occurs at wider apertures with extension rings. This effect increases as the magnification increases.

Many great information there. There are special Tripod-Mounts the macro slider tripod heads. (They start already at around $10). There are also "mounting plats" with integrate micro adjustment e.g. by NiSi and Manfrotto (as far as I remember). Also have to at short focal length give you more DoF than long e.g. 100mm or 160mm macros this might be appreciated especially hand help - since it is really really hard to get the sharpness where you want it to be with long macros.

I have an EOS M6 and EF-EFM adapter, which macro lens would you recommend, this or the 28mm EFM native lens? I like having the native lens but the 28mm is only at f3.5 compared to this one, which is at f2.8. What are your thoughts?
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, well, personally I'd go for the native lens because I don't really like using adaptors, and the 28mm lens is much smaller. But if you don't mind the adaptor then this lens might be optically a slightly better performer

Hey Chris! Thanks for the video! Been thinking about this lens for a while and I was hoping to get your thoughts on using this on the eos m system. I know that there's a native 28mm f3.5 macro and I also watched your review of that. How do the 2 compare? 35mm fl and f2.8 seems more appealing to me. I wonder if the battery drain on the camera while using the built in light would be the same? Would really appreciate your thoughts!

are there macro lens that open to f1.4? because we could put several teleconverters without being limited by diffraction the only objective that is close to it is the laowa 60mm f2.8 macro 2X indeed on the side of the object it has an aperture of f1.4 and it equates to a macro lens f1.4 with a 2x teleconverter.

@maxshean2607
@maxshean2607 6 жыл бұрын
A 1.4 aperture for macro photography is rather pointless. You would get much less than 1mm depth of field at 1:1 distance, which is of no use really.
@johntheux9238
@johntheux9238 6 жыл бұрын
I mean for microscopy it's fundamental, if you add three 2x teleconverter on a f1.4 macro lens you have a 8:1 f11 macro lens, that has a better resolution than 3 teleconverter on a f2.8 macro lens that turn into a 8:1 f22 lens that is strongly diffraction limited.
@s87343jim
@s87343jim 6 жыл бұрын
I mean....like....sure, but I think it will be quite expensive. A normal 85, 105, 135mm f1.4 is quite expensive already, not to mention when it needs to have macro capability as well. There are other options that may fit your needs: 1. Canon makes MP-E 65mm 1-5x Macro. 2. Extention tubes instead of a teleconverter maybe a better options if you can get really close to your subject. Something like a 200, 150mm macro plus extention tube
@johntheux9238
@johntheux9238 6 жыл бұрын
no, extension tube isn't enough to reach 5:1 macro but reverse ring can do that But teleconverter allow to create a 8:1 macro lens that can reach infinite focus without the need of disassembling and reassembling everything.

1 thing i never see in a macro lens review is how close you need to get to take a picture if i want to take a macro shot of someones eye do i need to almost push it against their eye or can i have some distance?
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 5 жыл бұрын
With a 35mm lens you will have to get pretty close - maybe better to get a 100mm lens

worth mentioning it goes to 1:1, some 'macro' lenses only achieve 1:2

Could you tell me wich 27mm filter are you using in the video? I've bought one 27mm filter to protect the lens, but it doesn't fit well, the thread is not good enough to adjust correctly in my 35 mm f/2.8 STM macro lens. Thanks for this great review, it helped me a lot.

@@LauraSantamera I have just read Canon says that the lens is not designed for a 27mm filter even though there is thread for a filter. The filter he uses looks like 27mm Kood High Quality Optical Glass UV Filter Made in Japan. The Maxsima foto - 27mm UV LENS is one I tried and it don't work.
@LauraSantamera
@LauraSantamera 2 жыл бұрын
@@WattoPhotos that is great information. The one I've tried is Cellonic 27mm UV filter, and it didn't work. I know canon have their special ES-27 hood to this lens, with it you can put filters. But this hood is expensive and it hides the light. I was thinking of trying another type of hood but when I saw this video I thought that 27mm filter would be a nice solution for me, but it didn't fit... I will try the model you told me, I will let you know if it fits or not. Thanks!
@eqsone
@eqsone Жыл бұрын
The writing on the filter reads 'Aico coated uv 27mm japan'. It might be about the thread pitch which can be 0.75 or 0.5mm. Unfortunately I've no idea what exact pitch will fit this one.

I'm really torn between this lens or the 60mm macro. On one hand, the 60mm macro lens can be used from a distance (both will require tripod either way) but on the other hand, this one has IS, built-in light and is more modern. Can someone (who has preferably worked with both) help me out?
