As a sports photographer I shoot 90% of the time Manual with Auto ISO. There is not much I adjust frequently. I am a big fan of the basic adapter. I bought one each for my 3 big expensive lenses, and they just stay on 100% f the time. That seems a little overpriced, but I am not buying a new 400mm F2.8 for $13K.

I’m honestly really happy with using EF L glass on my Canon mirrorless body. I won’t be buying any RF L glass anytime soon, due to ridiculously higher prices. 😊

One filter version positive missed is that for some bulbous low focal length objectives, this can actually be a cheaper option - going to EF lenses like some 15mm, 11mm, 8mm or even lower, it can be very hard to impossible to get a filter, and those that you can get are often more expensive than this adapter.

Love your Cons points. Shows you have thoroughly understood the product you are reviewing. Next EF-EOS R adapter to review would be Mieke Variable filter adapter, which for the price of a regular Canon adaptor gives you so much more...

Lets not forget that the drop in filters add a barrier between your lens and the sensor to protect it from dust.

I got the $50 ebay special. Works great. No bells and whistles, just lets me use my EF lenses on my R8

Good day! I use an adapter with a ring, assigned a temperature change in Kelvin to this ring. I often shoot reports and there are very difficult conditions, when in one room there is a diode light, in another there are classic light bulbs. And customers are asked to quickly give JPG files for posting on social networks. Therefore, this ring is very convenient for me!

Great video. I'm looking at finally diving into the world of Canon mirrorless cameras (an upgrade from my 10-year old Canon Rebel). The basic adaptor seems to make the most sense for me. Excited about upgrading and learning all that the latest Canon cameras/lenses can do!

An aspect you didn’t mention is many photographers prefer keeping a filter like a skylight on the front of their lenses to protect them. The protection value is gone with this new concept. What about the value of my collection of different size and different use quality filters (skylight, polarizer, ND’s, vignette) designed to fit in front of the lens? Besides the overcharging, it seems like Canon blew the entire concept of this top end adapter design change. I went with the cheapest adapter which is consistent with my wanting to continue using my expensive and numerous EF “L” lenses rather than shelling out serious cash for these RF lenses. I like my R6 a lot but won’t be replacing my lenses until the new RF lenses come down very significantly in price …and even then, it will probably be on an ‘as needed’ basis since by that time the EF’s will have little value remaining. Between the 50mm f1.2, the 16-35mm f2.8, the 35-70 zoom and the 70-300 zoom and the 600mm (all Canon L) I have a lot tied up in lenses.

Interesting the "new" control ring. For some of us remebering settimg everything on the lens with separate rings: shutter speed, aperture, white balance is basicaly like "back to the future" Thank you for the great review

As handy as it may be to have a polarizer in place with any lens, I usually have one on the lens as a protective measure, which came in handy once when I dropped the camera.

Very right buy first the adapter. And yes about the filter adapter: you are very right: hidden costs!

I am glad you pointed out the lack of a clear filter. That's is a big miss for Canon. I think they should at least sell a cover for a much lower price.

I'll be honest with you, I've been taking pictures when they were using film. Yeah, I take crappy pictures, but I always wanted a professinal level camera, every camera I owned was always entry level. Now, The R7 is an entry level camera, and then I have to spend money on a adapter to use my EF lenses. So we are talking about 2 grand for an entry level camera. That is nuts. I can buy a D7 for around 950.00, and not spend money on an adapter. These mirrorless camera are a rip off, IMO. And yes I know a high end camera is not going to improve my photography. It's just on my bucket list.

I have had all three adapters since my EOS-R; I now use them on my R5/R6. I find the control ring useless; I misuse it so often hitting the wrong setting(s) by accident I stopped using it on my adapters AND my 4 RF lenses. Maybe one day ... BUT I do like the drop-in model a lot for my 9 EF L lenses: I get a CPL and ND without messing with the front of the lens! Yea! Also, I started to sell my Lauwa EF Probe lens to get an RF version UNTIL it occurred to me that the EF version of the probe lens was better for my use because of the EF/RF drop-in adapter on my R5/R6; so, no RF probe lens needed.

I purchased the basic $99 Canon brand adapter and the $149 Meike VND adapter which I use for stills and video, respectively on my new R6mkII. I think the combination of the VND adapter + EF lens is actually more convenient for controlling video exposure than an RF lens with VND on the end of it.

I currently use the 7DII, with the two-dial controls, with the ISO controlled with a separate button to activate, so I don't know that I'd need the control ring. However, looking at the placement, I can see that being potentially useful, especially if you can reach/move it with a finger on the right hand wrapped around the grip. In my head, I can see that being a quick way to flip the shutter speed (my main starting point of adjustment when needed in the moment).

I think the control ring is amazing on the R. But ever since I got the R5, I have never used the control ring adapter, not even once, maybe I just haven't gotten creative enough. So I usually just tell people with R to get the adapter with control ring.

The drop in filter would be very useful for my wide lenses that can't accept screw on filters due to bulbous front element.

I almost grabbed the CPL filter adapter from an auction house, I sort of have plans to jump into the RP from my M50 (mainly for the stills capabilities) for $250 Canadian. Would have been so worth it.

Perhaps if I wanted an R5, I would march into my camera store and order the R5+adaptor, to be delivered together. My EF mount lenses range from TS-E 17 to Tamron 150-600.

Thanks for this great overview! I just started considering upgrading my old 6D to the R5 given the deals currently on and since I have 2 EF-L lenses, definitely will need 1 of these adapters. I was originally thinking of going the drop-in route, but you covered a couple of important cons I wasnt considering... especially the extra ridiculous cost of the glass insert! Furthermore, this spurred me to realize that I already have the polarizing & ND filters I need for my EF-L lenses, so this would literally be a huge waste of money in my situation since as you mentioned, you can't use the drop-in adapter with the new RF lenses (I'm also leaning towards getting the 70-200 f4 in your video). So bottom line, I will probably get the control ring version since it's available for $150 on sale now... probably would have went with the basic one if not for the sale but $50 seems much more easy to swallow than double @ $100 more. ;-)

The problem with the control ring adapter is trying to adjust it when you have a big lens on like a EF 70-200 upwards to a 500f4. You can’t lets the weight of the lens pull on the camera mount while you mess around with the control ring, you have to support the lens with one hand and that’s not gonna be your shutter button hand!! Setup your camera with custom function buttons.

Solid review! I use the ND adaptor on my R & R5 all the time, very useful when filming. (it even kind of hold me off from purchasing RF glass) Instead of buying the clear filter I just bought another basic adaptor for about the same price as a clear filter, so no messing around with the ND filter. Got me thinking though...do you need a clear filter when the ND is out? Would be useful to just have the outside part of the filter holder, it clicks right in.

Can't be emphasized enough that Canon threw up a big middle finger to all buyers of the drop-in filter adapters. There is literally no choice but to pay $129 more for those obvious frequent cases when you don't want to leave the original filter in place. It's offensive greed and Canon deserves no one's money until they own up.

It makes no sense to get the clear filter as the basic adapter is cheaper. I do not think the filter adapter is intended as your only adapter. It is for special cases in addition to either of the two adapters.

I just got my hands on an R7 and already the lack of three dials is frustrating me, so for the R7 I would say the control ring adapter is the essential choice.

I have a viltrox with the control ring. I personally like having the ring closer to the body. With this I can control my entire exposure triangle on the fly with one hand never leaving the viewfinder

It is a pocket adapter. After you have only RF-lenses, what to do with this adapter? Your only possibility is to put it into your pocket. - I want to keep my trusty EF 50mm/1.2 lens as long as possible. It is now free, it looks good (the best looking Canon lens), it is sharp enough, it is small by size and I love it.

It would be nice if you could buy an EF-RF adapter that would include a clear drop-in filter, instead of carrying a polarizing filter or ND filter as it ihappens now. I want to use the clear drop-in filter to protect the inside of the camera from dust. I have no interest in using an adapter with polarizer or ND filter, but I am forced to puchase one of these two variants of the adapter so I can have a slot to insert the clear filter.

I actually messed up a shoot because I was using the adapter with the ND filter and while I was changing I accidentally moved the dial and made my exposure darker, I also had my camera on auto ISO, so you can only imagine how noisy my final footage was😢.

Does the clear filter have any use really? Aside from filling that gap left, I mean... Maybe it protects the camera sensor from any dust the lenses could carry?

I bought the one with a control ring for $199. I should have bought the basic one because I do all my control (ISO) changes from the LCD touch screen anyway. Canon just charges so much for their accessories. 🙄

Hi Todd, thanks for all the explaination to this adaptors. Was their any specific reason for Canon to change the connection to a new system ? I am changing to the Canon R10. I have about 6 EF-S lenses which i will not get rid of, because their are all in good shape.

Did you notice any deterioration in image quality in using the adapter?

Will the kolari filters work in the canon adapter or do you have to buy the kolari adapter?
