Canon 1v Review
(excerpts from my blog)
Introduction to the Canon EOS-1V
"When it was released in the year 2000, it was the greatest film camera ever made. In 2019... It is the greatest film camera ever made.
OK, perhaps claims of it being the best is somewhat debatable. Some may argue that Nikon’s f5 of 1996 was up there with the Canon 1V. But one thing is for sure, the Canon 1v represents the pinnacle of professional sports film cameras. It was the end of an era; The end of the line for flagship film cameras. It would be just two years later that Canon would release the digital 1D. We face something similar today in which the upcoming (yet to be announced) Canon 1DX iii, will likely bookend the legacy of the EF mount DSLR. I suspect we will see an RF mount version based on it within the next two years of its release.
For any film shooter with existing EF glass, the 1V is a must own piece of equipment.
Conclusion
For any film shooter with existing EF glass, the 1V is a must own piece of equipment.
If you’re a working professional photographer shooting a mix of film and digital, throw it in your bag and effortlessly swap between the two without the need for separate lenses.
If you want a professional grade film camera that reliably gets the job done with the modern features you’ve come to love and rely on, then the Canon 1V will feel right at home, all while delivering top notch image quality from your pro lenses.
In the digital age, the best film camera of 2000 will stay the best for the foreseeable future. Do yourself a favor and get one now. "

Quick note, it was the 1Ds I was referring to that came out in 2002. Although there was a 1D in 2001 it was not a 35mm equivalent. You guys can see some of my film photography on my website www.mikmilman.com or on my Instagram @retrograding

Thanks for this video. Great job. I have been a Canon shooter for many years and I have a number of cameras. I recently shot some film with an older camera that I have (non Canon). Given that I have so many EF lenses, I am thinking it would be a really good thing to buy a 1V. I could leverage my lenses and have fun too. I do like to shoot film as it offers something different from digital.

Love my Elan II. First camera for me that could leave the leader out. Feels great in the hand in a way my disappointing 300D never could. Picked it out of storage the other day and discovered the film door latch broke. “Such things” do not happen with my inherited AE-1P. Now loving an Elan 7e with battery grip although Canon got the look right with the earlier Elan II. The EOS 3 was never on my radar because of the styling and controls layout, but you say this 3-button mode thing works OK? Lately I was considering it because of ... all the AF points! I’m so tired of focus-and-recompose and hoping the focal plane didn’t shift too much. I bought AF cameras to focus for me. But now that I see EOS 3 prices are comfortably above $300, and 1v prices are more realistically north of ~ $650 I have to reconsider both.

Interesting and good video mate, enjoyed it and now following you. Personally, I have used all the 5d cameras and love the current mk4 for events and travel stuff. But heres the thing, I tested my 1v on a wedding last year shooting both colour and b/w and now a lot of mainly younger people are booking me pretty regular here in the UK for their events, family shoots and want me using just film.......my two 1vs are killing it no problem. Oh, and yep I am earning more cos I charge more for film...... happy days!!!

Great video dude! I have a question, do you think it would be worth it to upgrade from a canon A1 to a 1V? I'm very interested in this camera if it can boost my image quality
@MikMilman
@MikMilman 4 жыл бұрын
The image quality will of course depend on the film and lenses you use. I have not tested eos glass against fd and fl glass, but my guess is that if you can find equivalent lenses, the more modern pro lenses would be superior from a technical stand point. The 1V would mostly offer you a different shooting experience: Modern form factor, autofocus, shooting speed, etc. If you are shooting casually and not needing any of those features then that may not be important to you. All that said, if you already have pro level EOS glass, I think this camera or the EOS 3 (which shares many of the same features but not its build quality) are no brainers.

Here is a story , I waited for a few year to get a full frame Canon before i stop shooting with my Canon 1 V ...and then come 5 D MK ll full frame!!....first working day at Bellingen 2008 Global Festival with my 5 D MK ll it froze after 1 hours work well just in case I brought my 1V I had 20 rolls in my pocket of provia fuji just in case .The 5D everything froze will just like a computer does...so I put it away and went on with 1V , some time later I try to turn it on again to see if it work and it did from then on I never did trust digital again, and up till today I always take my faithful Canon 1V !!!!!!!!! in the year that i had Canon film cameras i had never had any issues ever!!!. Now I got MK 3 and tested MK 4 and canon had since 2008 to get read off the noise and guess what it never happen .The 5D MK 2 was the last innovation that Canon did ,and one more thing the light meter on the MK 2 was poor it was like getting a Ferrari engine and mounted in a Ford body and forgetting to put disk brakes and wide tires plus having a lousy car body.The took the sensor of the of the Canon 1D s STUDIO CAMERA !!! and mounted on the 5D MK 2 minus dust ,water prove .But i still got 5D Mk 2 and MK 3 and works good , but my 1V is my tank camera it goes were I go solid better build than any Canon Digital .
@MikMilman
@MikMilman 4 жыл бұрын
Pulling the battery often solves those issues. My main camera is a 5d iii and I've never had an issue with it. My 1v is definitely better built than it. I'm not so sure the 1v is better built than a current 1 series camera though. I couldnt say.

The Canon software that allows you to read the EXIF-equivalent from the camera is called "ES-E1 EOS Link". I still use it with my 1V, running it in a Windows virtual machine on Windows 10. The software is crude, basic but functional. In addition to the software, the package included a 1V N3 to USB cable with some electronics in the middle. I doubt there is motivation to invest time writing open source software for it unless someone has tens of hours of free time on their hands (and I say that as a software engineer). Instead, for a more modern solution take a look at www.meta35.com. They support MacOS as well, unlike the original Canon offering.

Mik Milman is wrong. Only the ATG's model version can do 10fps without needing Canon's battery pack. ATG is only available to selected pros. The rest of the pros have to pay for Canon EOS-1VHS (it comes with Canon PB-E2) or Canon EOS-1V, then later buy the ATG/Canon PB-E2 with Canon charger/battery. Again, with the special battery which ATG/Canon no longer made, the 1V simply CAN NOT do 10fps. But today film photographers are cheapskates, they click 1fps.

I have shot the EOS 1V for 1.5 years now. I have also bought many other SLRs, and I am afraid that this camera is inferior to the Minolta a7 and Nikon F6 in many ways. For example, the lack of a proper back LCD forces me to look up my phone for the instructions PDF. The autofocus is fast and reliable in the day, but far inferior to Minolta and Nikon at night. I have tried the 70-200 f/2.8 L II, 35mm f/1.4 L II, 70-300 Nano USM. The focusing at night is simply unusable. I have had better success rate using even the lower end F80. The 1V also has the worst grip among the film SLR I mentioned above. I have bought the HS vertical grip. It definitely helps, but not by much. The 2CR5 batteries, unlike the CR2 or CR123 are not rechargeable. Unlike the F6, the TTL of the 1V isn't compatible with modern Godox flashes. It surely looks like a beast though.

I will agree that it is the best EOS film camera. However there is the Nikon F6. I think it depends on what set of lens you have, Canon or Nikon. The one advantage of the F6 is that it uses nearly the entire lens lineup made since the Ai manuals through the in body motor drive AF and well as the AF-S lenses. The Canon is limited to the EOS lenses only. Also, the accuracy of the 3D matrix color exposure meter is dead on accurate even with slide film.

Your point on which lense ecosystem you are in is the key. With Nikon you indeed have a huge legacy, but later on no AF-P lens works on their film bodies, whereas on the Canon side every EF lens will work, no matter what type of motor. True you can't easily use FD and FL lenses and whatnot, but many of those classic lenses were upgraded and released for the EF mount and are superior to the old vintage glass, so I don't see it as a huge disadvantage unless you had a huge collection of FD lenses at the time the EOS line came out.
