Canon EOS R vs RP: Canon's Worst Full Frame Camera.

Күн бұрынWe have an interesting camera battle today, the Canon EOS R with EF 16-35mm f4 adapted vs the Canon RP with RF 15-35mm f2.8 IS. Both stabilized lenses, better lens used on the worse camera. We'll test stabilization, autofocus and overall image quality. And we'll do a side by side both using the RF 35mm f1.8. Also we'll find the optimal vlogging focal length by testing the 15-35mm at various different focal lengths. My vote was the 18mm f2.8 :) Now Canon go make that lens! 18mm f2.8 stabilized. Pancake.

Canon has levels of lens stabilization, the 15-35mm is at the top, and the 16-35mm basically has none lol. So the RP is just as good as the R stabilization wise with the right lens. It's the RF lens that are better I noticed the difference so basically you can use the RP if you have the RF lens it automatically has better stabilization I think that Canon had all of this in their mind when making the RF series lens since they would later on put IBIS in the R series maybe they just wanted to make the smoothest cameras and as for the auto focus if you put the RP in 1080p then you get the same legendary DualPixel AutoFocus so yeah it's was pretty similar

I'm going to be honest, nothing beats the RP, I mean that. For 900 bucks you get a full frame sensor with excellent low light performance and the ability to shoot at wider angles plus in camera bulb timer, 3 custom shooting modes, 1080p 24, 30, 60 and lastly you get a pro sized body that feels confortable to hold and it's feather light for its size. You get the RF mount which let's be honest is the future of Canon and you get a big confortable viewfinder with a lot more resolution than any other camera in its price range. Every other camera is either APS-C, has an EF-M mount which without the EF adapter is pretty much a dead end, has worst and softer image quality or is a point and shoot which becomes useless once you want to do any pro work. I'll gladly sacrifice 1080p 120 and 4K for an actual full frame sensor and reallly sharp HD.

I think it's lens-dependent. Every time the 15-35 was on, it looks smooth. My native RF 24-105mm f/4 is incredibly smooth, as well. But here's an undocumented feature I've found useful. When I have a third-party lens that has bad vignetting wide open, using the digital stabilization can make the dark corners go away.

@@groovymotion5706 Yup! I got it as a kit with the 24-105 and had no idea I would enjoy it so much. Everything about the lens is stellar. Pictures look good, video looks good, stabilization is good, focus is best ever, and unlike most SLR lenses, RF lenses seem to have great performance at maximum aperture.

I’ll be honest. I’m watching videos on a 65 inch 4K LG TV / Monitor and the differences between the cameras are 1. Colours and 2. The “sharpness” quality. What I mean, On the RP it looks like I raised the sharpness slider way higher than it should and now I’m getting the “smartphone sharpness” effect. On the R the sharpness is still there, but it doesn’t seem artificial. Combined that with the better colours, skin tones, contrast, etc and you’ve got a better image quality. How it supposed to be. I don’t know if you can spot differences though if you’re watching content on your phone. Especially on social media apps. I bet with a good colour grading and a little adjustments on the sharpness you can get the RP’s image closer to the R’s. The RF lenses are so superior to everything else that canon makes for consumers. But, with the price tag way higher too. And one last thing, I still can’t believe that Sony’s “vlogging” little camera has a better image than the RP. Amazing.

For whatever reason, Canon’s digital IS actually fights with their lens IS, in most of their lenses. Next time give the digital IS a run with a non-IS len, it works surprisingly well, but still can be a bit jumpy for walking vlog shots. Did you think that the Faithful profile looks better?

His outdoor vlogging stresses camera engines to their max because he doesn't use ND filters, fill lighting, or natural shade. In many ways, he's showing you exactly how bad the image could possibly get. When he films indoors, his footage generally looks very good. I think it's actually a useful test, though. He already showed that the worst image that ZV1 gets is actually pretty good. So, yes, the RP can beat the ZV1 senselessly in good lighting with good lenses, but we find out that the ZV1 is much more consistent because it manages to look presentable, always.

In some circumstances RP have much better focus and image quality than R...but this happened to R against RP as well. Both have almost the same performance and is really hard to choose a real 100% winner! Probably the price will make the real difference between them and the inside components technology, as maybe in the future a firmware update will boost camera capabilities.

This was a pretty useful review. Well done. The R is twice the price of the RP. Unless you are doing professional assignments I would think the RP is more than good enough for vlogging or other types of KZfaq/social media videos/photos. I'd actually get the Sony ZV1 and mount it on a 18 inch monopod instead of the Canons. ZV1 already has the lens while the Canons require extra money to equip with lenses.

The lens really made a difference there when stab. Focus and quality I would still give a small edge to the R, but the RP did really great with the better lens.

I love making jokes when I comment but on this one I'm going to be serious. As a Beater/Walk Around/YT/Vlogging/Full-Frame Photo Mirrorless (as long as you don't need advanced tracking for sports/pets/kids running) it is very very hard to beat the RP, especially now that it offers 24fps for the cinema geeks. I pulled the trigger on the EOS R and am very happy with it but I expressly didn't get the RP as (at the time) it didn't have 24fps as an option. In retrospect and if I didn't already own the R, it would be hard to pass up the RP, especially if I didn't have some kind of specific requirement like sports ability or I must have CLOG etc. GREAT little camera that EOS RP.

Definitely! I was agonizing over R vs RP because I loved the idea of being able to get DPAF in 4K using APS-C lenses, but when I realized that I'd basically be using 1080P most of the time anyway and I can still use 4K if I use manual focus, seeing that the RP + 24-105mm f/4L is the same price as the R only, it became a no brainer for me. What surprised me further is that the 24-105mm f/4L RF is absolutely stellar and is honestly a system seller on its own right.

In all the clips except the clips at 10:00, the RP was noticeably less shaky. In the 10:00 clips, the camera shake was the same. Also, the Canon RP colors were noticably more saturated and more pleasing IMO. Strange...

I love my EOS RP - finally a affordable, NEW full frame camera. I have it since about 2 years and i really enjoy it, especially with EF glasses and the Meike drop In Filter adapter! A single filter set for ALL lenses. But recently, to the RF 50mm 1.8 i also got a RF 800 F11 2nd hand. Its so awesome, for a handle (iShoot) i waited nearly a month, but with it its pretty much perfect for my needs and budget.

I think you have to be in 1080p 24/25/30fps IPB to enable HDR video (at least that's how it works on the glorious 5d4 which is almost the older R twin)

In this vid, the RP crushed the R. The 20 mm was a perfect field of view ( as a viewer that is.) What software were you using that could read the Canon Log enabled files?

@@nixxinn Might be, I'm using it adapted on a Sony FF (and other cameras). It's also vignetting a lot, and kinda distorted. But for the price, there is nothing comparable, it's also very sharp. And even if the Canon FF cameras would automatically engage APS-C mode, it'd still be wide as a pancake.

Try the *POTATO JET LUTS* that are designed specifically for EOSR. color grading is SO easy... it’s the first LUT pack I’ve ever bought, and I basically only use it now

There’s a super small AF Samyang 18 F2.8 FE (full frame) for the Sonys. Do try that. Also same super small 24 F2.8. Because Sony is awesome.

Since you can’t even lift, bro, have you considered a chest-mounted camera rig for flogging (Mount the camera so it points at your face)? It’ll prevent the tennis elbow while moving more weight to your torso. Put it on before you put on the back back.

I like 20mm the most, but 24mm consistently comes out as the most practical lens to buy when considering quality, availability, cost, weight.

Here's a lens to try on the R or RP with digital stabe and/or enhanced digital stabe: the Sigma 20mm Tony 1.4 DG HSM Art lens. Problem is it's already 950 grams plus being an EF lens, you'll have to add the EF to RF converter. But I bet it would look good. I'd like to see that combo in action. And with the Monkey Strength program, we know you can handle it.

A used EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a sleeper vlogging lens at 150$ or so, especially with IBIS in the upcoming models.

It's obviously the 15-35 lens that has the better stabilisation by miles. On my phone screen, I see virtually no image quality difference between the 2 cameras. Can you imagine the R5 with the 15-35 with both IBIS and IS working together and enhanced digital stabilisation AND gimbal!! It'll look like it's on a tripod! Haha.

Is there a way to turn off 15-35 lens IS and leave the digital stab on or even enhanced? I suspect the lens IS is actually not doing much at the wider end. All the magic is from digital stab. If that's the case, RP + a Samyang 18f2.8 lens could potentially be a usable combo. I know currently 18onlt comes in FE mount but given the success of 85f1.4RF, the RF version of 18mm and 45mm should come soon

no its not just the digital IS. you can see it on the RF addapted lens that the Digital IS doesnt work well there. its a combination of the RF Mount lens IS and the digital IS what makes it so smooth. they are optimized for that.

I think the light is beutifull when it make a perfect triangle sun-camera-subject ,so to do a perfect comparson ,someone else has to carry a bar with the 2 cameras hooked up on, and film from at least 8m to have the same angle of light

As an 80D owner, I'mma say no. I find it impossible to get a crisp image out of the thing. Main reason I want to upgrade. Whatever Canon does to come up with the 1080p image, it muddies everything up.

it wasnt the RP tho. it was the combination of RF lens and digital IS system. the adapted EF lens is just not optimized for that. On the R the RF lens looks even better.

I feel like the RP was way better with the digital stab - maybe that’s because the tech is newer? I have a feeling they discontinue the EOS R when the R5 and R6 come out

its because the RP had the RF native mount lens on it and the R had the adapted RF lens. the RF lenses are optimized for digital IS of the RF systems. The same lens has the same stab on the R body.

What’s the one key difference? If you’re talking about the processor then it seems to me that it’s not very key as there was little to no difference between the two. Especially once you switched the 15-35 between the two as it’s that lens that made the only discernible difference.

Rp is underrated camera it just need more 1.8 lenses like 20 1.8, 24 1.8 50 1.8 & 85 1.8 .

Thank both of your shoulder for me, trying to do the same with the Z6, I don't even know on what to put the selector Auto ??? someone knows ? I don't think it's gonn be so good, my shoulder is 64 yo and my lense and body are 1.7kg

I think at 8:08 the P makes you look more like Gerald Undone than the RP does. And at 8:19 the P makes you look more like Mathieu Gasquet of Mirrorless Comparisson than the RP does. Hope that helps. ;-)

Clog can be a bitch .. but I figured out you wanna be about a stop over exposed and it’s a night and day difference. Also if you go into settings , 1st tab page 3 turn the “Metering timer” up to 30 minutes. That will leave the exposure comp meter On the screen for 30 min so you don’t have to keep half pressing the shutter
