I just switched from a Nikon z6 to a Sony a7riv. The auto focus on the Nikon really isn’t as bad as Jared makes it out to be. I think their tracking works better in some situations and I actually really like holding the front button to activate tracking. But For eye af Sony is way better

@@drbeardo6960 rumor has it that the Z8/Z9 that's being used in the field blows them both out of the water and has a global shutter to boot. Thing about eye AF is it's just an algorithm and once Nikon tweaks theirs... Point being, these days you can't go wrong with any system and as Daniel points out all these "influencers" hype the differences to get clicks. While Canon is doing better now it was Sony that was ahead 2 years ago in terms of eye AF. As long as photographers keep chasing the top system for bragging rights they'll never be able to invest in the system they have; granted it also means the rest of us can gobble up the leftovers on eBay. No doubt an RF to Z adapter is in the works. The FE to Z adapter is 2mm and works pretty well so they can definitely do wonders with twice that thickness for an RF to Z. Then I can buy some RF glass on eBay when "everyone" jumps to Fuji next year for whatever reason... I shot Canon DSLRs for 20 years before handling a D750 and jumping ship in 2016. That said all my EF glass works perfectly on my Z6 with the Fringer adapter. LOL

Uh, I think Sony beats Nikon in AF in general (at least any type of tracking) -- and this is coming from a Nikon Z shooter.... However, my hope is that over time, the Z7 II and Z6 II will at least come close to what Sony and Canon can offer, via the second processor on the generation 2 Z bodies. Over time, they will improve though (in fact, NIkon is due to release a new update in 2 days for the Z cameras--including some AF improvements).
@HR-wd6cw
@HR-wd6cw 3 жыл бұрын
@@ElGrecoDaGeek I would probably doubt that. At best, it might be the same as perhaps an a7 III or one of the lower end Canons, but nothing that will "blow" Sony or Canon out of the water. IF anything, it will be comparable. Which is an improvement for NIkon, but for pro wildlife/sports shooters (which is what the Z9 I think is going to be geared towards) it may not be enough.

How does the Z5 ISO noise compare with the Z6/Z7? The RP is cleaner than the Z7 and just a bit noisier than the Z6. It's probably a lot cleaner than you'd imagine. As for dynamic range, the RP is behind for sure if you 'need to' raise shadows, but if you deliberately overexpose without blowing out highlights, the shadows are clean and highlights can be recovered. You do the opposite to what you'd do on most other cameras.

Just for the record, you can get 4FPS tracking with continuous AF with the RP, and it works just fine (I have one, to be clear). I don't know where Jared is getting "speed priority" and "tracking priority", neither of which is listed in Canon's RP user manual (termed generally as "High Speed" and "Low Speed"). As with any camera, they only list the top end of the range; fps is always and will continue to be affected by other factors such as battery life, flicker mode, lens aperture, etc. So you're not likely to top out at 4FPS for that long, but you CAN get it.

Really like the fact your videos are thorough, provide critical context, and earnestly state how the gear world looks from where you stand. I also appreciate the fact you make it clear the perspective you speak from. I have a Z6, am pleased with it so far, and believe I have a lot to learn before I get the best it has to offer. I am thankful for the remarkable advances Sony and Canon have brought to market and believe it will ultimately benefit most customers. My camera has always been good, but (with firmware updates) is a much better camera now than when I purchased it 15 months ago. I am hopeful the Z6II, Z7II, and newer bodies Nikon introduces get updates that put them on par with Sony and Canon in the eye focus and movement tracking area. It feels like they are getting close.

Correction on RP about charging via USB-C : You don't need the ridiculously expensive Canon USB-C chargers for the RP although Canon does not make it clear. You need to have a "Power Delivery" (PD) port with a USB-C to USB-C cable. You can then use any battery pack (such as Anker makes), wall plug adapter, or PC/MAC with a PD USB-C output with at least 18 watts to charge the RP battery in the camera. The RP does have to be off in order to charge which is a disadvantage.

I just know I liked how Nikons felt and handled a lot better at the time. To me, eye af isn't everything. I got along fine without it for years. I started doing video with Nikons on the D90 (the first dslr to ever feature video). It had manual focus only on video, and you can see the stuff I shot with it 10-12 years ago on my channel. Low light, color Disney rides were rare back then. Anyway, I have 5 Nikons, though the Z6II is my first full frame. All my old ones still operate perfectly. I am not a nikon fanboy, and I own a r6, but I don't agree when you bring the "system" argument in this comparison saying that the r5-r6 is better then z6ii-z7ii. First when we talk about system I would thinks its more about the lenses then the bodies. And second, more advanced bodies are released almost early, and we dont't know to much about the pro mirrorless bodies. So their is not a clearer winner yet. It's not sure canon's ecosystem is better yet, but you also say it like its a determined fact, again, just because the r5 and r6 are the better bodies at this moment ... :) the video is great, but I was a bit bothered by that.

I shot Canon for 20 years. I then shot a D750 and was hooked by the ergo and super clean ISO-less RAWs. I agonized over the switch, but after 20 years I made it. Point being, it blows me away how quickly these "influencers" and many gearhead photogs switch between systems... I still have my 5Diii and 7Di and my EF glass though I sold or gifted all the older bodies (film, 10D, 30D). Even then I still use my Canon glass on the Z6 with the Fringer adapter. That established I totally agree. All of the things the "influencers" yap on about and create drama (clicks) for is algorithms. It's only a matter of time before one leapfrogs over the other for a short while. For example, rumor has it the Z8/Z9 has a global shutter AND those who've used it have said the AF blows away Canon and Sony big time. If even simplified versions of those algos make it into a Z6ii or Z7ii it would be a big deal. But then Canon would try to one up Nikon etc. Competition is good. These influencers are trying to kill the competition which would be bad. Jared is ok but Tony Northrup is by far the worst of them though I really used to enjoy his videos before they were powerpoints. Like I said I shot Canon for 20 years. Still have most of my glass and I can use all of it on my Z body including some ancient FD lenses with IBIS. It took me 20 years to switch, but if I switched as often as these guys do I'd be broke. Then again when they sell all their gear on eBay those of us who are patient win |)

I had to make this choice a couple of months ago and ended up going for the Z5. To me the Z5 felt better in the hand (probably because I've shot Nikon in the past so it was familiar) and I felt it was a better overall camera than the RP. Also I did consider the system I was buying in to. I ended up looking at Nikon, Sony, Canon and Fuji and in the end it came down to Canon or Nikon. Canon's higher end bodies are better than Nikon's bodies at the moment. But, I wasn't in a position to buy a higher end R5 or R6 so I had to buy the better body for my current use case and budget that exists today, this was the Z5. Having seen the improvements made with the Z6ii and Z7ii I am confident that Nikon will catch up to the competition in the areas they may lag slightly behind currently (the AF isn't really that bad). We also haven't seen what Nikon's pro bodies will be like yet, although it's rumoured we could see them around the Tokyo Olympics (if we get an Olympics)... I'm really looking forward to seeing the potential Z8 and/or Z9. For me the Z5 offered a better and more enjoyable experience that I could use now, as opposed to potentially not enjoying the RP and regretting the purchase. I don't think you can really go wrong buying in to either ecosystem to be honest. Both companies will make improvements and changes in the future and both have solid lens offerings. So make you decision based on the camera that best suits your budget and use case today, instead of worrying about what camera you may buy tomorrow based on today's specs... Both ecosystems are great.

@Coo Koo I got my Z5 in a kit with the 24-200mm, which is a great walk around lens. I also have the 85mm 1.8 S which is almost permanently attached to the front of my camera at the moment and intend to pick up the 35mm 1.8 S What lens you would want to get would depend on what type of photography you do.
@PommyBastard
@PommyBastard 3 жыл бұрын
@Coo Koo the 24-200mm is a good all rounder if you aren't sure what focal lengths you would currently use. It's also not badly priced. It's not great in low light though. But for shooting in the day or still objects it's perfectly fine. The 24mm - 70mm F4 is also a good starter lens. Again, not great in low light but will perform a better than the 24 - 200, but obviously you won't have as much reach. The quality of the 24 - 70 is also meant to be pretty good. I've not used it though. The 24 - 70mm 2.8 is likely out of your budget. If you need something better for low light on a budget then probably the 50mm 1.8 S is a good all round prime lens, but a lot less versatile than one of the zoom lenses. Again, it all depends on your use case. What I find a great lens, someone else might not find it that great for what they use it for.
@PommyBastard
@PommyBastard 3 жыл бұрын
@Coo Koo I'd probably start with the 50mm 1.8 It's a nice middle ground in the prime range. The lenses are expensive because, partly, you get what you pay for and, also, the R&D spend on the Z system needs to be made back 🤣 They really are fantastic lenses though. The price isn't bad when comparing to other mirrorless lenses from Canon of similar quality. DX lenses will work... but I wouldn't recommend them. You would end up with a lower resolution image. If you want to go down the route of using crop sensor lenses you may as well just buy a Z50, which is a crop sensor camera, or look at one of the cropped sensor cameras from another brand that might have lenses in your budget.

There's nothing wrong with investing in Z mount from a future perspective. I most recently bought a Z6II and it's honestly one of the most fun cameras I have ever shot with and this is coming from somebody invested in Nikon, Fuji and Sony. I like shooting with it more than I like shooting on my A7RIII. The subject tracking and eye AF is also very good on that camera, AF in general. It always kills me when I see that hemp field clip and instead of just changing the AF mode to something like either dynamic or pinpoint and continue shooting he just complains about the camera.

After removing the jokes and in-video ads, (I get it, everyone needs to eat,) besides showing that you still don't have a grasp on the Z system AF modes, (talking about using the joystick alone to move AF points,) you have maybe 15 minutes of just basically comparing the spec sheets of each camera. Regarding the sensors, rather than spout ISO and megapixels, talk about actual image quality. Look at noise performance, dynamic range, tonality of not only the RAW file, but the JPGs. Many entry level photographers will use JPG, (I know, that one stings me too). If you look where the rubber meets the road, examine the flexibility of each cameras RAW files. The RP has a good tolerance for being overexposed, but less so for underexposure and shadow detail. The Z5 is pretty flexible for overexposure, but is in another league for being underexposed or working with shadow details because the sensor is nearly ISO invariant like the D750 you mentioned. This holds true for stills across the comparable systems, not just these cameras. (Even Pentax wipes the floor with the best Canon sensor for working with shadow detail. It's a huge weakness in their system, albeit one of very few.) A camera with a near ISO invariant sensor is an extremely useful thing to have. Think of it like Eye AF. Do you need it? No, of course not. But once you have it, it's a great tool. You also never mentioned the Z5 IBIS. How was this skipped Mr. Knows Photo? That's a HUGE, very useful feature and likely responsible for much of the price difference. You need to spend over $1,000 more than a Z5 to get a Canon body with IBIS. I think you would have been much better served focusing on the actual cameras you've decided to talk about rather then just using it as an excuse to tell everyone (again) that you switched to the R5 for video and to look at their overall system is the "bigliest". Not everyone is going to upgrade to a fully pro lens lineup and high-end camera body. Lastly, you speak about not jumping from one system to another when a new camera is released, but you're literally in a community of content creators that do exactly that in order to stay relevant. How many videos from you and your peers are titled something like "Time to Switch?" Stuff like this further programs consumers to do exactly that. So, what's the real message? Overall this seems like the most disjointed camera comparison video from you to date. I hope you take these comments constructively as I do legit enjoy your light heartedness, humor and well practiced delivery.

I was shocked when I saw DPReview's studio comparison tool showing the Z5's ISO invariance and underexposure performance next to the RP's. With my D750 I've got so used to being able to massively lift the shadows from my raw files. I couldn't count the number of times I've fired off a bracketed set at +/-2EV to deal with a very high DR scene and when I've come to merge them in Lightroom the result looks no better than just the -2EV frame with shadows lifted. I'd hate to lose that.

I moved to RP but its for a short time until I move to the R6, I have had a few talk with different photographers, such as amateur and pros, most of them are more leaning to R6 due to the processors and quality for portraits even though the R5 has more mega pixels, the 20MP is more efficient and brings out more, we even put it to a semi test with image quality and at least 80% of us chose the R6 quality and models that talked to us as well, I tested both and loved the R6 more. I agree with your slight sliver on the lens selection to cannon. I will add however that the zmount beats the rf technically. the wider ring means that future lenses can be be made faster and lighter since they can skip a lot of the extra glass needed to bend light from a large lens to the sensor area. it also means wide angle lenses can have a higher max sharpness. Of course, that also depends on the lenses taking advantage of the strengths of the z mount. Time will tell how the ecosystem evolves. Being technically superior doesn't always guarantee success.. Look at Betamax

The Sony wasn't good enough for my necessity, I like more the color science and the flexibility of Nikon RAW files that's more important for my and for my way of shooting than all the technological stuff that Sony offers. You were a Nikon shooter and a great photographer I used to follow you but the new Jared I don't like it so much. Sony A6400: - The one with the best autofocus (fast and precise). - Great availability of lenses. - The one with the best options for post-production. - The only one that has unlimited video recording (limited only by the battery, of course). - Fuji XT-30: - The one with the best colors. - Great availability of lenses. Hi there Jared. I’m looking to buy a new camera. My current camera is a D3300 which I use for school. While that camera it’s not great, it does get the job done. But now that my skills have improved drastically I want to upgrade and the choices I’m interested are the D500 and Z5. I know both cameras are drastically different but they both have their advantages. I like the D500 because: The built quality which means it’ll last a long time. Focusing system Already own a good amount of F mount DX lenses Longer battery life And the fact that I can purchase other F mount lenses(either cropped or full frame) for a lot less than Z mount lenses. D500 disadvantages Older sensor and cropped sensor(though the crop factor is not a deal breaker) I like the Z5 because: More focus points Full frame Newer sensor Slightly higher image quality You can see what the exposure will be like before you can take the picture. Disadvantages of the Z5 Less lenses More expensive lenses Shorter battery life Slower continuous shooting Which of the two do you recommend ? I plan to use the camera to do a little bit of everything from personal portraits, wedding and birthday parties, to shooting events like concerts and sport. I know there are better cameras on the market, but at the moment I can only afford 1 of these two. Your opinion is much appreciated.
