Canon M6 Mark II - Lens Sharpness Test.
I tested the EF-M 11-22mm, EF-M 15-45mm, EF-M 18-55mm, EF-M 55-200mm, EF-M 22mm, EF-M 32mm, EF 40mm, and the EF 50mm. Some of the results were a real surprise, both positive and negative.

Really sad. A system with only a few native lenses and out of the few lenses there are several with mediocre quality which kind of defeats the purpose of the 32MP sensor :-(

If you are willing to put on a larger lens, the EF-S 55-250 is much sharper than the EF-M 55-200 and you get an extra 50mm of reach. Good used ones are out there from about $110.

The 55-250mm would defeat the purpose of the size advantage design of the M-bodies. Might as well shoot with and SL3 if you're gonna use that lens. At the very least, it wouldn't need an EF to EFM adaptor.

I liked this video.For a long time now, the "Nifity 50" has been an overhyped lens imo. On full frame 35mm cameras, YES! 50mm was essential, along with 28/35mm and 75/80mm prime lenses. The APS-C (1.6x crop) equivalents are 18/22mm, 32mm, and approx. 40/50mm. We spend soooo much time focusing on what the 35mm equiv. IS, rather than what our APS-C recommendations SHOULD be. From your tests, here, the 18-45mm zoom, plus 22mm pancake, plus 40mm and adapter, and the 55-200mm SHOULD be the GO TO recommendations for budget, value for money, great performance EF-M lenses. The ONLY recommendation I can see, for the 32mm f/1.4, IS that gorgeous low light performance - Its really is a wish-list lens.

Very much agree. The 32mm f1.4 is such a hard one for me, it does produce some stunning images and is the best engineered lens of the bunch. BUT, it’s expensive, and it’s not a great “all round” focal length, so it rarely gets used.

@@markwiemels True. My feeling is that the 32/1.4 is Canon's first attempt at making an "L" type quality lens for the M format, and is market testing it to scope the level of interest.

That could be spot on. I suspect there isn’t lots of interest, to be honest. Would love to see a 15-45mm f2.8, I could probably dump most of my EF-M glass for a lens like that.

I don't see mirrorless being a goto form factor (even if full frame) for profi or commercial photographers, because of how the camera body sits like a pimple on a rhino's butt (read that as attached L quality professional lenses) thus needing lens mount rather and camera to tripod mount. Unless... Canon starts to get serious about producing professional optical quality M-mount lenses. Which as others have said, would undermine the EF Lens ecosystem that most profi's are locked into and heavily invested in.

Tsc Tempest, the big lens small camera body is a bit of a funny thing. As an interesting side note; Canon recently announced they have stoped developing EF glass and are now focusing on RF.

Never had my hands on it, but it is a very attractive option. A single lens that covers such a wide range, my impressions from other reviews is that it’s pretty good. It won’t resolve 32mp though, none of the Ef-m zoom lenses do, but should be really good for 4K video. I think it’s very worthy of consideration.

You have odd copies. My 50mm is STUNNING ... and the 11-22mm is great on a sunny day, as is my 15-45mm. My 55-200mm is bloody great!

I say go for it then, I have had some subscribes say it’s an excellent lens. I have not used it myself, but I do really like the idea of a single lens setup like that. Keep in mind, It will not resolve the full 32.5mp for photography, but none of the ef-m zoom lenses do, but It will still take great photos and would be perfect for 4K video.

Hello! Very well done comparison! You linked to an EF-EFM adapter above. Is it as tight on the camera as the original? I have a viltrox and it wobbles left and right when you use the manual focus ring.

good test. In my monitor(2k) of your video, here is the list: 1\ the best one is 32mm of course. 2\ 22mm is good, but compare to others, it don'y ahead a lot. 3\ 10-22mm center part is a little twist(due to its rangs), and it's not sharp. but vlogger like it, cause it can twist face looking smaller. lol 4\ 18-55mm image quality seems solid. but the range and the price, no attractive compare to 15-45 5\ 15-45mm seems the "worst" of it, but it still accpetable. consider the range and price, best of best~~ I just bought M6 mk2. after watching your video, I problely not to buy any lens. cause new lens in covid-19 increased a lot, like 11-22mm new charge around 500 USD in China. it's not worth. if i add extra 500 usd, i can bought another sony new generation to replace A6600. lol

Christopher Frost seems to have had the reverse of yours where his 18-55 wasnt bad but not great either, but his 15-45 was great on the wide end and ok on the tele end. He tested 2 of the 18-55s and got the same crappy results. Guess there's a lot of variation in these cheaper lenses.

For an APSC sensor, 32 megapixels is quite high and is detrimental unless higher grade lenses are used. Should have been 24-26 megapixels, tops.

Not really. A 32 megapixel image still going to have at least the amount of detail of a 24 megapixel image, even with a less sharp lens and much more with a better lens.

Yeah, I suspect you would struggle the pick the difference between the Sigma 30 and the Canon 32mm, in most real world applications. I love the Sigma Lenses, I have the EF mount 30mm 1.4 and the 18-35mm 1.8, big fan of their lenses.

@Mark Wiemels if 11-22mm is not good what is the budget choice for good landscape with M6II? I'm really confused b/w buying M50 vs M6 for my first camera. While M50 gets the job done I want to spend extra money on M6 so it stands for few more years without having to upgrade so inclining towards M6. I'm seeing refurb M50 with kit for $599 and just M6body for $680. I don't want to spend too much on lens right away. My use cases are mostly landscape, city, portraits. So far based on your video I plan on getting 22mm, 40 or 50mm but what's the best choice for landscape at smaller focal length?

11-22 is pretty good, if you get a good copy and use it around f4-5.6. I would still recommend it for landscape. I also like the Rokinon/Samyang 12mm.

FYI.....I have the Canon M6 Mark II, and the lens that came with the camera ......the Canon EF-M 18-150....which you did not review in this clip. I have compared it to the Canon EF-M 22mm (similar range).....and I think 18-150 provides a better picture than the 22. The all around picture taking with this lens is fantastic.

Wow, that's a hard one. The 32mm is technically the better lens, but I find the 22mm more versatile. If you want to do more portrait photos and really want that blurry background, the 32mm is better, but for all around use I prefer the 22mm and get more use out if it. The 22mm is also, smaller, lighter, and cheaper. Personally, I would get the 22mm, or the 23mm f1.4 Viltrox.

Nice video. I am also interested in comparison of EF-S 10-18mm stm with eos M 11-22mm and EF-S 24mm pancake with the eos M 22mm ... Any chance to test them? If I already have the EOS EF lenses I am wondering if it worth it to switch them for EOS M lenses. Any opinion? Thanks :)

I don’t think your will see a significant difference in image quality switching to the EF-M lenses. You get a smaller overall size, but if that doesn’t matter to you, I wouldn’t bother buying EF-M versions. The EF-M 22mm is an f2 lens, so you get better lowlight performance, and better background blur and subject separation, which could be a reason to buy that lens.

Man, this can really vary based on the type of landscape, but Rokinon or Samyang 12mm f2, comes to mind, as does the Canon 11-22mm.

The kit lens is a good start for those shots. Other than that it would depend on the framing 16mm sign is good, as is the 22mm canon. Use the kit lens to find a focal length that works for you, then look for a prime lens around that.

Too low video resolution & bitrate to judge. For example Canon 11-22mm at f/5.0 changes quality just because of video quality improvement from frame to frame.

Viltrox, unless size and price is very important, then I would go with the Canon. Both are very good, you can't go wrong with either. The Viltox is better in low light and can give a more blurry background.

Standard, the speed booster hurts sharpness very badly. I still own a speedbooster, but its use is more a "creative" choice, don't use one if you want the sharpest image.

For sure the EF-M 11-22mm, it’s a great wide lens. It gives a huge feel of view. I have a bad/soft copy of that lens, just make you buy it someplace with a good return policy and check the lens sharpness, I have bad/soft copy of the lens, but others have reported their lens is perfect.

I bought the 32mm f 1.4 with my camera. Don't know if I need the 22mm as a second kit or should I go for another one? I want to film mostly and do close up photos, videos on low light. Is the 22mm needed if u got the 32mm? I had the 22mm in my m50 and just bought my M6 m2 with the 32mm lens.. 🤔

The 32mm is the sharpest lens, best in low light, and produces the the most beautiful images of any of the ef-m lenses. The 22mm is a more useful focal length, but I don’t think you need the 22mm and the 32mm. You should pick up one of the zooms lenses with IS for video, I would suggest the ef-m 18-55mm, I did a video about that lens on this channel.

There wasn’t an 18-150 when I bought the 55-200, so wasn’t really an option. For a one lens solution, I recommend the 18-150 for sure.

That's pretty funny. I think we may see a killer revision of the EOS R in 2020, and what the EF-M lens line up could really use is a 15-45 f2.8, I think that would be a game changer for the M series.

@@markwiemels Yeah, if CanonRumors got it right we'll get two new EOS R bodies in 2020, I hope they will be done with crippling their products by then (there is hope after they reintroduced 24p). It's just such shame that Canon doesn't care about M system and Sigma has to give them a hand to deliver some decent primes. I own both M6 and M and I don't imagine going around without adapters, since almost very EF-M glass has superior counterpart in EF-S lineup.

Forget the female lens collection..... ef 24 lens, Pentax Takumar 50 f1.4, Carl Zeiss Jenna 35f2.4, Jupiter 9 85mm f2 and a Pentax Takumar 135 f4..about half the price of two lenses manual but great lenses..

Agree, I have some vintage glass and love it. Adapting vintage glass isn’t for everyone though, I should do a video specifically on vintage glass. It really is a great way to add to you options and also gives you some different looks.

Hi Mark. As you know, Ive just bought the Canon M6 mkii and am enjoying using it. However, wondered if you have any experience of a USB charging issue I'm encountering. It charges fine using my wall plug and cable from my iPad Pro (USBc-USBc) but when I use the same cable from a powerbank ... no charging! Tried three powerbanks and two cables. Any ideas? I was hoping to be able to charge in the field. I can contact Canon if you havent experienced this.

I’ve actually never tried to charge the battery via the camera. The power bank may need to output a certain voltage, or amperage, or something. I know some power banks only do 2.1 or something and others do 5. The manual may detail the requirements.

I have used the nifty fifty 50mm f1.8 adapted for that purpose, I put it on very tall tripod and shoot down onto the food. If you wanted something a bit wider then the ef-m 22mm is a good option. Also more pricy, but the sigma 18-35 f1.8 is probably the best aps-c lens ever made, and would also work well, plus gives you some versatility.

Keep in mind the sigma 18-35 is often used to shoot feature documentaries. Many consider it a modern engineering marvel, it’s certainly the best lens I have ever used. So it’s expensive, but when you look at what you are getting, it’s better value than it might seem. For your purpose I might look for a used canon 50mm f1.8 to start with, bet you can find one on eBay for around $60. Also just pick up a meike adapter, about $30 new.

Alexis Bermisa, I’m sure it does vary based on the focal length, so just picking one, like I have done, is not really scientific. I have played with the lens since, and got somewhat better results. I hope to do some more complete testing of this lens, and do a video about it.

@@benbeethoven yah, the 32mm is pricy, it’s a good lens but expensive. The 22mm f2 is a great budget alternative, I actually use the 22mm more than the 32mm. That’s a bargain on the 55-200, for mine, it is the most underrated lens in the line up, people just don’t seem to know how good it is. Thanks for using the affiliate links, it really does help.

I really love the EOS M system, I already own the 11-22mm, 18-150mm, Sigma 16mm, 22mm, 28 macro and 32mm. I also have the adaptor in case Canon won’t make the 100-300 and buy the EF-S 55-250mm :/.

My Camera Bag thank you ! It’s difficult to answer but I think that the EF-M 32mm is my favorite follow by the EF-M 11-22mm. Depending to the situation. :)

@@markwiemels Well, I don't have my picture aren't soft. In fact, it's quit sharp. But may be it's due to the 32.5Mpix of the sensor from the M6 Mk2. Also when I saw your video, I don't find softness. I don't do too much pixel peeping on my lens, like I used to with my 6D.

I've seen a few of these videos I was seriously considering buying the m6 Mark II it really seems like there are no lenses that can even fully take advantage of the 32 megapixel sensor what's the point. The best ones I've seen or the sigma Trio the three lenses they're made for this camera by Sigma but even those they're good but they're not perfect even those cannot take advantage of the 32 mega pixels I don't think I even want to buy this camera when there are no lenses for it

I shoot Nikon, yeah it is an issue. Apparently canon has a number of new lenses in the works because of this issue.

You can build a nice little system with the M6 Mk II. If you have the Sigma 16mm 1.4, Canon 22mm f2, Canon 32mm 1.4, Sigma 56mm 1.4, Canon 85mm 1.8 and Canon EF-s 55-250mm STM (surprisingly good in terms of AF speed, sharpness and very quiet lens with good IS) you have a fantastic all-round system. The M6 Mk II is the most un-talked-about and underrated camera out there for photography. The AF is just incredible. It nails AF time-after-time-after time shooting fast moving subjects at even f/1.4. No issues keeping up with 14fps or 30fps (raw burst mode). I took an 80 shot burst (18MP raw burst mode) of a seagull flying around and every single shot was in focus (55-250mm lens). I have shot skateboarders coming towards the camera and jumping off steps and falling in all directions and no issues with the Sigma 56mm at f/1.4 nailing focus every time at 14fps. IQ is fantastic, dynamic range perfectly adequate and even higher ISO images look great when you down-sample them a little. In fact, if you down-sample to 20MP it at least matches the Nikon Z50 in terms of noise levels and that camera is fantastic at high ISOs.

Curtis Leslie, the kit lens is actually pretty good for video, it’s a great all rounder to start with. Then I would probably buy the Sigma 16mm f1.4. Check out this video, should be helpful - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8qbi66Sub3HdHk.html

@@curtisleslie112, yah the 18-35 is probably the best aps-c lens ever made, and also my favourite lens, but It really is studio lens when used on the M6. It's not a lens you want to carry around on the M6, but for tripod and studio work its awesome. Its also not very stealthy for using in public, but purely based on image quality, it can't be beat.

Yes, they are all excellent, I have the 16mm f1.4 now, and it is one of the best lenses in the system.

The 50 mm on this camera it’s not 50 mm but 80mm and it is not 1,8 but f 2,88 Because of the crop factor 1,6

A 50mm lens is always a 50mm lens, and a 1.8 aperture is always a 1.8 aperture. The only thing that changes, depending on the the size of the sensor, is the field of view. So a 50mm lens might have a field of view that is equivalent to 80mm on full frame, but it's still a 50mm lens with a 1.8 aperture. The field of view also has no impact on aperture.

Its crazy that in this world so much is temporary and quickly moving but assuredly the love that God has for you is eternal.
