Revolutionary. Canon is running. They, clearly are not willing to let Sony eat their lunch. They are putting unique features and lenses, like the f2.0 zooms.

Out of all the Canon R3 reviews that I saw.. @2:18 truly shows the eye control AF. I haven't seen anyone show off the eye control AF. So kudos for you on that one.

The eyeball control autofocus really is a game changer once you calibrated it properly,some reviewers don't really even try to actually use the feature properly and call it a gimmick feature🤦🏻‍♂️

That test acquiring the four objects in focus by simply looking at them was right on point. The eye-controlled autofocus is clearly faster and highly useful. Well done!

That’s so ironic. I was just thinking about this today wondering why Manufacturers don’t have tech that follows the eye or has scrolling subject detection features. This is pretty amazing tech- I’m happy for all the canon shooters out there to have a tool like this. Great stuff!

Canon have tried it before, for many manufacturers it’s also not popular to add something that not everyone can benefit from (as it will undoubtedly lead to negative reviews). Eye tracking still suffer with people with certain eye colours, with certain type of glasses, even contact lenses can reduce its abilities and people with certain eye disorders… Allot of specialised companies have tried solving it for decades now. This is not to put it down but a reality for the technology at precent.

@@john-lenin Maybe you should ask other camera manufacturers why they didn't have ECAF way back in 1998 too OR even better why they don't have it today. Why have they been slow to market when the technology has been around for 23 years.

Thank you for your thoughts. I think a direct comparison of image quality, low light usage and croppability with the higher #/smaller pixel R5 to the fewer #/larger pixel R3 would be interesting.

I agree with it being a game changer. Shooting a wedding this would be a major upgrade. It’s a tool for the right application and wouldn’t call it a gimmick feature at all.

I shoot Sony and have the a7iii. But this feature on the R3 is insane and so futuristic in terms of locking on to your subject. Very clever and definitely something I can see future cameras having across the board. Great video as always Manny.

You brought up an interesting point for shooting weddings. On my A1 I just make the focus box small and line it up with the subject I want then it eye locks there and recompose. Takes a sec. But the canon certainly is pretty cool and hope it works out in real world.

I use my R5 in the same way but sometimes it’s not eyes you want to focus on. Or the cameras don’t find the right face/eye in an important situation. Eye control beats all variants by along shot. As you can focus on anything by just looking at it. It can’t get more direct

The eye control af is such a cool feature. With the way he demonstrated it, it looks like a really useful feature. The image quality is great to, but that’s expected from a $6000 camera

Unbiased opinion, good stuff! I just hope, all manufacturers will go for it so that the technology will grow up a lot faster. If you still have it, try not to plan what you want to shoot, just look around and then decide what to shoot. You will see that the eye focus needs only one step, while the others need two steps. I just regret that it has only 24mp. If you press the shutter as soon as you see something in the viewfinder, you would need to crop later to get proper composition. Otherwise, you will have to notice first, move your hand to compose, then pressing the shutter and that has no big difference compared to the R5 and A1.

You should try the touch drag AF where you use your thumb on the LCD screen to move AF points. It could give the eye control AF a run for its money.

As always great video Manny but the R5 can switch from photo to video instantly with the M-Fn button I use it all the time

Or just press the red video record button on the top which then records video as per whatever you have programmed into the C3 mode settings. You don't need to switch to "video mode" at all. Can't be easier than that.
