For me, the ability to get a 4K wide, medium, and close-up in interview situations (with one camera) - or for my own talking head videos here on KZfaq, is the real draw. But there's a couple other things you missed. Stabilization in post! Shooting a bit wider in 8K (or even 6K) and having the resolution to allow your post stabilizer to punch in even more means very smooth, stabilized images without losing ANY resolution when delivering in 4K - more so in HD, obviously. The same goes for rolling shutter corrections. Finally, for those of us who don't have any really long lenses, the ability to crop in 200% turns that 70-200mm into a 140-400mm with no resolution loss on a 4K timeline. This is a tremendous amount of value - in essence, three cameras in one, shooting wide, medium, close, added stabilization, reduced rolling shutter, and doubling the focal length of your lenses. I think you really downplayed/overlooked this added value. Otherwise, good job. And thanks for the info (especially storage times) and imagery!

Not sure If you said it, but to shoot 8k raw with 60 fps you will need an external power supply and it only works in raw LT. Thanks for the video!

super helpful dude! thanks for posting this. On my monitor, the 4k long GOP looks sharpest unless you zoom into 400%. Keep up the good work.

I just realized there is RAW cinema HQ in the R5C if you switch to S35 mode.

8k 60 fps with the dynamic range of raw is really good for VR video, where you shoot 180° and where you need lots of sharpness to keep it immersive. Other than that I dont see much uses for it tbh.

Wow thanks for the comparo on the 8k vs 4k at 200% vs 400% - eye-opening for sure! I was thinking you'd mention the main reason why I'm shooting 8k- to pull stills! Also thanks for the reminder to set the Mac Studio FCPX to 'better performance' while editing. I keep forgetting to do that to ease the playback on such huge resolution files.

Thank you, Josh, for the R5C YT series. 8k RAW is C-Log 2. In non RAW recordings, C-Log 3 and C-Log. Maybe this is the reason for color diff

Thank you for the very useful, clear and precise tutorial. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but the reason I am looking at 8K is for the "future proof" factor. I would imagine that telling a client that their wedding footage, music video, or broadcast project, for example, wouldn't be obsolete years from now. I remember 20 years ago when HD720 made my 16mm documentares unairable. 20 Years from now 4K will be obsolete, not so much 8K, I'm guessing.

Dude you should have way more subs, keep up the good work. Can I ask what the battery life is like on the R5C when only in photo mode. Does it last like an R5 ? or is the battery draining still very quickly ? I haven't found anybody that mentions this.

8k is extremely useful in sports videography. It gives you the freedom to follow the action in post (cropping) with less need for camera pans & zooms

Hi Question! I have the R5C and I’m shooting an 8K full raw I downloaded the software needed. I noticed there wasn’t a plug-in for Premier pro only final cut and avid media will I still be able to view my Raw Footage in premier pro or is there a step or something I have to download first aside from the raw software from Canon. Thank you

4k xavc have sharpening applied in camera!

I believe in media review you can tap the top and change what you're looking at. Basically switch folders. Performance wise, 8K RAW plays fine in Resolve out of the box. I think Resolve just handles RAW best.

You don’t have to back out to review different record types. The area up top where it says RAW Index is a drop down. Tap it and you can select XF-AVC, MP4, and Photo as well.

Hello Josh, how are you doing? Nice video :) you have to touch the arrow using the touch screen to change the folder. It will change from raw to mp4 or xf avc. That downarrow next to raw index in the playback screen. Cheers

I just got an R5C (coming from an R5) and man - what a difference that "C" makes! One question for your XF-AVC editing on a Mac... Have you found ANY way to view XF-AVC thumbnails in Mac Finder?? 🤔 Great video, as always!

For me 8k will be great because I’m a product photographer/videographer, my clips are short. I downsize the image for instagram though but I assume you’ll still be able to see the quality, same as downgrading 4k to FHD?

2:00 I'm seeing huge differences in highlights. 4K XF to 8K RAW LT is pretty noticeable and LT to ST, I could only pick out better highlight retention.

I’m recording content for YT now but still want it to be more future proof for archival purposes. For that reason I think it might be better to record at the best resolution and down sample for YT. Thoughts?

12 bit colors are different than 10 bit and the RAW is 12 bit, this should make the big difference. In the two first comparisons you can see how much more colors the RAW files have in the sand or in the way where you walk on. Then in your samples the XF-AVC is sharper, when I use XF-AVC and RAW I never had this situation, always my RAW Files with the standard settings are much sharper in 4K output than the same in XF-AVC and when I try to sharpen the XF-AVC it looks not so natural sharp like the RAW. So I'll make in the next days a similar video as I experienced something total different than what I see on your samples. The much sharper but more natural looking image and the more nuances in the colors are my reasons why I use 8K RAW over Longgop 4k. So the one possibility is that you do something wrong with your RAW files or I do something wrong with my longgop 4K files. Then you can record directly proxies in the R5C, with this you lose no time and you just have to say (in DaVinci Resolve) where your proxies are, so it is a easy workflow also with RAW files.

I have both cameras R5 and R5C, I’m missing The R5 4K HQ sharpness quality to watch it right to TV without editing in my new R5C . the question is how can I use my new R5C as I used my R5 in mode 4K HQ (Ufine) right to watch it on tv without editing . I tried my R5C in all tv watchable formats without editing but I couldn't get the same sharpness qualitv as R5? Please help me 🙏

Does the R5c have the same time lapse feature like the R5 ? I’ve got an R5 and love the Timelapse setup but was thinking of buying the R5c if it was the same

I like a lot of your videos but I think this one kind of misses the point on raw. Like raw vs jpeg, the big benefit of raw vs compressed video is the flexibility of the file in post (white balance, color shifts, grading etc) so I think it would have been more useful to see a comparison of grading two clips vs a general resolution comparison. IMO 12 bit footage can look better on skin tone detail than 10 bit so also maybe some headshot comparisons would be great to see

Skin tone is all that matters. we need actual people in the shot
