so does the Tascam XLR2D-C connect via my R6 MKII via the digital hot shoe. Or do we still have to use a 3.5mm cable to connect the Tascam to. the camera's mic port, and using the camera's sub par pre amp. which seems like that would defeat the whole purpose of the Tascam unit?

With all the new Canon cameras, that have the multifunction hotshoe like the R6 Mk II, no cablr is needed. Only the hotshoe connection.

To be fair, Panasonic and Sony have audio divisions giving them a head start over Canon
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
They do. And that is also the reason, why Canon didn't make their own audio adapter, but instead partnered up with Teacs Tascam division. Smart move on Canons behalf.

This was very helpful. I've been using my Tascam with the R5C for a month and everything has been working great. Today, I plugged it in and got a message, "Currently you cannot use this accessory." I've tried it with batteries on the Tascam, camera on battery only, camera on V-mount (PD), switched every possible setting back and forth. I'm not in slow-mo or anything like that. Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for going through this - big help! I just ordered an R5C and am looking at cage options with a top handle, but realise the tascam unit most likely won't fit with it all assembled. Looks like I'll be able to use the cold shoe convertor and mount the tascam unit to the side of the cage (45degree angle in the top corner of the cage), and connect to the camera with the 3.5mm cable. Do you know if there would be any loss in audio quality using this 3.5mm cable into the camera?
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
You won't loose any audio quality, but you'll loose 4 channel recording. And I can confirm, that you won't be able to fit a top handle, once you fit the Tascam unit in the hotshoe.
@Sol-In-Seoul
@Sol-In-Seoul 2 жыл бұрын
The difference is the Tascam is doing it's own A/D conversion and sending that digitally thru the shoe (there is no change to the audio after the Tascam). But if you go into Canon's 3.5mm you're going to be using their A/D converter (for me the whole point of this device is to bypass Canon's bad sounding pres/converters).

I want to use this unit but my top handle gets in the way, is there any data shoe extender to convert a cold shoe to a data shoe?
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
Not that I know of unfortunately. The Tascam unit does not really accommodate that. So side handles might be a better option. You can use the Tascam adapter with the cold-shoe and the battery plate, but then you only get 2 audio-channels.

Hi there. Best review vid yet also seeing camera settings was great. One follow up question that I can’t seem to find anywhere. When the Tascam is connected via hotshoe, I see the camera reads as channel 3 and 4. So, can you also plug in another microphone to camera’s original 3.5mm side mic input for essentially a third channel of audio?
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual Жыл бұрын
You have 4 channels of audio. 2 channels on the camera mic port and 2 channels from the Tascam. On the Tascam, you can choose to use the 2 XLR ports, route XLR port 1 to both channels or use the 3.5mm port on the Tascam for your channels 3 and 4. Actually, the Tascam channels are channels 1+2, your camera channels become channels 3+4. But the end result is the same.

24 Bit audio? And I'm nee to the XLR world. So can you use channel 1 and channel 2. But use channel 2 as a "saftey" channel at a lower DB/volume or is that no how it works. And what battery is used to power the mic with the battery conversion deal (sorry for all the questions)
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
Audio is typically recorded in 8, 16, 24 or 32-bit. The higher the number, the better the quality. And yes, you can adjust the gain of all channels individually. The 2 XLR channels are adjusted on the dial on the audio adapter. The internal 3.5mm microphone jack in the camera is controlled from the menu in the camera. I hope that explains what you were looking for.

Hey man its me again, I can back bc I found something that you may know about. I found out that some people take a 32bit float Zoom f3 and use the line out and plug it into the R5c and it bakes the 32bit float file straight into the video? Is this true or is there something their not telling me? And if it is true can you explain it to me and or make a video on your set up?
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual Жыл бұрын
No. That is not possible. The hardware in the Canon R5 C is max 24bit 48 kHz. But what they probably are doing is sending the output from the Zoom recorder to the camera, so they can sync the 32-bit float recording from the Zoom recorder with the audio in the camera in post. So you have a good waveform match. If you however used a Zoom F2-BT with the Atomos UltraSync Blue or got the bluetooth module for the Zoom F3 and paired it with the Atomos UltraSync Blue, then you could just timecode match them. What they are doing is a cheap hack not to have to use timecode. The issue with that is, that it limits them from moving the Zoom recorder, as it's hardwired to the camera.
@fourwheelerjock
@fourwheelerjock Жыл бұрын
@@EmeraldAudiovisual Damn thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna go ahead and get away from the 25bit and go 32bit float. Just trying to find a compact and easy way to sync audios easily. So I guess time code is the only real option to get pin point accuracy on syncing the audio
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual Жыл бұрын
Timecode is indeed the way forward. Look into TentacleSync. I will have a video soon on that. They have some nice timecode generators and a 32-bit float bodypack with lav mic at reasonable pricing.

Thanks for the informative video. I have a problem with the adapter, hopefully its something you have experience with. I connected a Deity D3 Pro microphone to channel 1 but there is very loud background noise. Is there something i am doing wrong? Or i have to remove the noise post?
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
From what I can see, the Deity D3 Pro has a 3.5mm connector. Which connector exactly do you have that connected to ? Because you would either have that in the mic port of the camera or input 3 on the Tascam. And to use input 3, you'd need to switch the Tascam to use input 3 opposed to using the XLR inputs. Also, the Deity supports TRS and TRRS and does some sort of auto-detection. So if the standard cable, that comes with the Deity is a TRRS cable, I'd try a TRS cable instead, to force it to TRS.

@@EmeraldAudiovisual Oh sorry my bad. I typed too fast. i am using tascam tm 200 sg with the input 1. The noise is super loud, like some kind of electric hum. As a reference, i connected the Deity D3 Pro to the Tascam Input 3 and i hear quite a bit of noise too. However the noise is not that bad when i connects the Deity D3 Pro direct to the Camera mic input. I am suspecting if its caused by the Tascam adapter. In fact, the camera default mic sounds much much cleaner than the two i connected on the adapter.
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
@@iamacelee you might need a balanced cable and also make sure, that you obviously have not enabled 48V towards the Tascam, as you don't need it. On the Deity connected to input 3, as I said try a TRS cable or maybe put a ferrite in the chain between mic and adapter. In-line ferrites with 2x 3.5mm jack can be found readily on the likes of Amazon.

But still no ability to record 24 bit 96kHz, as I understand it? From the specs the Tascam A/D can output 96k. Yet the R5C, in XF-AVC mode, can only accept 48k max. Since it's just a digital transfer, the Tascam is doing all the hardware work, I don't see why Canon can't update their outdated software to accept an incoming 96k audio stream. Everyone in pro audio has had 96k for 20 years!
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
Don't get me started. The Panasonic Lumix GH6 does 4 channel recording in 96 kHz. It's not rocket science. So yes, you're absolutely right. I mean, I would have wanted 32-bit float at this point. At least Canon teamed up with Tascam and got an audio adapter, that works instead of making their own half baked solution.
@Sol-In-Seoul
@Sol-In-Seoul 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmeraldAudiovisual I was almost convinced to go with a Zoom F3 to record 32-bit float at 96kHz. However, that would require using a cage and mounting separate funky things, and then syncing audio later (yuk). So came back to this Tascam solution. I do like that it transfers digital audio thru the hotshoe and writes it to the video file-keeps things simple!
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
Depending on your workflow, both the InstaMic (which supports bluetooth timecode to the TentacleSync Sync E) and the TentacleSync Track E could actually provide you 32-bit float and you could use the audio tracks on the R5C as backup/alternative tracks. Especially since timecode in and out now is an option with the R5C. But yes, the simplicity of having all audio tracks in the video file to begin with, all in sync, is what makes the Tascam solution compelling.
