The only thing the Canon has over the Nikon is faster AF, If theres a Z6/3 with Z9 AF that will be incredible and check all the boxes

I think the main similarity of these cameras is the number 6 and the mark II. The Z6II costs around £1500 and the R6II about £2200. £700 difference is a very different tier from one another.

Always like to hear your opinions. I really don't see much in the output for either to complain about. I was surprised to see that the Nikon appeared (to me) to handle skin tones a little bit better. Really things like ergonomics, autofocus performance and lens selection are all more important factors to me. Thanks for the video.

Thanks a lot for this presentation Andrew! I know both cameras, and used to be a Nikon shooter, but now I will give up the Nikon for the Canon. Why? It feels better in my hands, the operation logic ist more intuitive to my , I prefer the scrollwheel at the back, I also can move the focus frame much faster around with the joystick (what is a pain with the Nikon), the autofocus is much better (recognition of human eyes and animals), as is the IS (very important in law light!), and last but not least I prefer the lens selection in the Canon camp, especially the lightweight telezooms. Therefore I would recommend the Canon also for photographers, not only for hybrid shooters. Kind regards from Switzerland.

Hey Andrew! Great review, with a lot of very valid points! Thanks! When I was a Canon shooter, I really liked the scrollwheel on the back instead of a dial pad. Because turning it faster helps can safe some time to get the settings where you want them. At the same time, as I do mostly event photography, I much prefer the screen of the Nikon. But yeah: when I do video, I use 4k60 a lot, so the Canon has the edge there. Both excellent camera's!

Lenses wise, I think both brands are pretty equal. Nikon Z does have their 50mm f/1.2 S and 85mm F/1.2 S. There is an upcoming 35mm f/1.2 in the mix too! As a Nikon shooter myself, if you are thinking about getting into the system, I would wait for the next gen bodies or get the Z8/8 now. They are totally different level vs the current Z6ii and Z7ii in terms of performance especially in terms of AF.

What looks better to you and which one do you like better when you pick it up. As long as the camera system, lighting and lenses can provide the specs and features you need to deliver to your clients, it doesn’t matter. Tech is so good and affordable these days, just get whichever brand you like the logo better or something arbitrary like that or get whatever your friends are shooting so you have a community.

Interesting video. What you like about the rear LCD on the Nikon, I actually despise. I very much prefer the style of the Canon rear screen for one simple reason and that is that I can flip it around and "turn it off" by closing it facing in toward the camera body. I rarely set the rear LCD screen to show anything other than the info screen to begin with, and very much prefer to keep the screen turned in towards the body. If I need to change something that I don't have a dedicated button or dial for, I can just quickly flip it out, change whatever I need to, and flip it back in. I also prefer the Canon because it has that fourth dial. I usually set it so that the front dial is shutter, the top rear dial is ISO, the lens dial is aperture, and the rear back dial is White Balance in Kelvin. This way, I can look through the viewfinder (which shows the picture profile I have set) with exposure simulation turned on and adjust the exposure, DOF, and white balance in real time all without ever needing to change any menu settings. Once you have that set up and experience shooting that way, it's incredibly difficult to go back to any other way of shooting, and while I do still largely shoot raw, it obviates much of the need to shoot raw because outside special circumstances, you can adjust the image you're going to capture in real time before actually taking the picture. Also, most people that would make use of the high speed electronic shutter would likely be sports photogs where they are shooting with a long lens on a monopod or tripod up at at least 1/1000 shutter speed anyway. Huge left to right swerves are not something they're going to do a lot of.

I have a pretty low tolerance for DoF. For me 35 f2 is as shallow as I like it before I start losing facial features to the blur, so a 50 f2.8 is fine for me, or a 24 f1.4 for example. I used to mess around with 50 f0.9 lenses, but getting the eyelashes in focus and not the pupil, or having a blown out blurry nose where the eye is in focus looks super amateurish to me. Finding that trade-off balance between light gathering and DoF is almost more important to me than the focal length itself. Which is why I'd lose it if somebody brought out a 28f1.8 that was good like my old Canon EF lens. However, I'd always prioritise a quality compact f2 / f2.8 than hulking f1.4 glass tbh. It would be cool if companies started to prioritise that again.

I think Canon have better lineup overall. For me in the entry level the R8 is unbeatable. Or the R10 APSC. In the used market the original eos R is dirt cheap and the only con is the lack of IBIS for the Canon entry level. Nikon advantage could be IBIS (an used Z5 / Z6 is very cheap) but the Nikon IBIS isn't the greatest one. Nikon haven't cameras to compete in entry level. Even if i like Nikon colors more, you can calibrate that in your Canon.

So, as R6 II user who previously had D750, I am waiting to see when Z6 III comes and what is the price, because I got better shadow recovery (colorful noise in R6 II, that is better controlled in D750) and the colors in nature had more volume/tonality. D750 screen was brighter than R6 II, which is strange and dissapointing, autofocus is great in R6 II, I haven't tried Nikon mirrorless. I also prefer tilting screens to flip out, also third party lenses for Nikon.. I only have 24-105 f4 EF lens, so it won't be that costly, even though I will loose some money, so now I am waiting to see what Z6 III will offer and then decide and whatever I choose I will buy some better lenses.

Iv been trying to decide myself and I fee Nikon images are just better . I like the colors the sensors put out and low life performance is great . Their lenses also have a different mount which apparently makes the quality of image better , I can say it seems the images are very sharp and pop very well combined with the colors . For artistic purposes I’d go with Nikon , although nowadays it seems everyone’s caught up with specs and not the enjoyment of beautiful images as much . Sonys have great specs but their colors can be gross , the a iv makes everyone look like they have jaundice , but specs are good so people buy it , but the colors are eh. I find Nikon have very engaging imagery , canon is in offensive and sometimes safe looking to me . Some people say you can make me look the same but they really can’t , there is alway a difference and to me those differences are important. Why would I put effort into editing photos and colors, white balance when shooting etc then to ignore the color coming out of the sensor and it’s limitations

I'm a Sony and Fujifilm user currently switching over to Nikon. I've had Canons before, never Nikon. It strikes me how Z6 or Z6II does not get all the praise it seems to deserve. Specs are pretty much the same as the competiotion, image quality is arguably superior, but the price difference on body and lenses is what really decides it for me. As an amature photographer sometimes making videos Nikon seems like a pretty obvious choice. I understand a professionals point of view, but for me a fully articulating screen is not worth 700 dollars. 700 dollars gets me another lens. Maybe it's my bad, looking at all these youtubers reviewing gear like everyone has to make money of their photoshoots. I just can't help to think the Nikon side looks way beyond all competion for me as an enthusiast.

Because the z6 is not really a good hybrid camera. Has like 1 codec for video, stabilization is not good, focusing is iffy. I’m switching to the LUMIX s2x. Takes both great photos and video. Great stabilization and tons of different video options for $2k. Lenses are lighter. 96 megapixel sensor shift shots for landscapes. Can stream to KZfaq directly from the camera. Superior phone app. Flip screen. Live LUTs. Nikon is so far behind right now on video. Photos, color, and lens choices are great, but video is a bit outdated. IMO.
