Me too. And it isn’t just because some canons in CLog3 (including R6II) turn some blues into purple/violet/lavender… I find the colour and exposure / dynamic range of the LUMIX full frame cameras are noticeable more pleasing than LUMIX MFT cameras, other than the GH6. The GH6 seems to be closer the S5, S5 II etc and in some ways more ‘cinematic’.

Thank you for this detailed and well produced video. Your team did an amazing job in filming the comparison shots and AF demonstrations. I picked up my Canon R6 MKII yesterday and I am not disappointed. I came very close to grabbing the Panasonic! The features are close and better in certain aspects to the canon. You cannot beat the price point of the Panasonic either. What tilted me towards the R6MKII is I already have several EF & EF-S lenses. Now I could easily adapt those lenses onto the Panasonic but I have seen where the lenses can become laggy. Also it was an easier to find an RF to EF/EF-S adapter with an ND variable cartridge for the Canon. If you are just starting out and looking to go mirrorless, I would recommend the Panasonic S5II. If you’re already in the Canon system or looking to adapt older or even newer EF lenses, then the R6MKII is the way to go. Anyway, thanks again for Have a blessed and safe Christmas Holiday season

It is great to live in an era where technology is stretching the creative limits of its users. Both of these cameras are excellent efforts to advance the state of the art for their enthusiasts. One of the best points of the Lumix S5 II is the Sigma adapter that can mount Canon dSLR lenses to the Lumix body. It works reasonably well with the EOS EF lenses, so Canon users have an option to add a Lumix body to their stable and not risk much. The addition of PDAF to Lumix is HUGE. Hopefully, they will update their Micro 4/3 gear soon to include it there. m43 has many advantages over full frame when it comes to high end video. (Low light being a huge exception, of course, as full frame pixels suck four times the photons.)

@@TheSlantedLens well then you would be the first. Many other creators who got the loaner admitted that it came with “strongly suggested talking points” which is common practice. I’m not trying to come at you. The video just seemed wildly biased. Especially that there was noise in the canon at 800 iso. I don’t even get noise at 800 in my m50mii. If you were instructed on possibly letting the panasonic win or given talking points or made to feel like the panasonic should win any head to head, for the sake of transparency, that should be said at some point.

I have recently bought an S5II and while I haven't had a lot of time to test it yet, what I have tested, I like it so far but I have to test it a lot more whenever the rain in my area finally stops long enough so I can do that which seems few and far between lately. I have a GH5 and had a GH6 and traded in the GH6 to get the S5II as I didn't like the softer, slightly noisy 4K video quality I was getting from the GH6 and the 5.9K 10-bit 4:2:0 on the S5II is sharper with much less noise. I do like the GH6 colors amore as they don't have the slight magenta shift the S5II colors have and look better, especially in skintones. With external recording from the S5II, you said it outputs 12-bit 5.9K, that is only with the paid RAW upgrade coming in May and according to Sean from Panasonic on the last Lumix Live stream, with the paid upgrade, it will output RAW to an Atomos Ninja V+ (not the original Ninja V) otherwise you are limited to 4K 10-bit 422 from the HDMI even when you have the internal resolution set to 5.8K, 5.9K or 6K and if you are set to 5.8K you will see the black bars on the 4K output due to it being 17:9 and in 6K you will see the 3:2 aspect on the 4K output which is a shame but that could be because the better video features are in the upcoming S5II X. I have not yet tried the Real Time LUT but I like the addition of it. I always shoot in V-Log for the maximum dynamic range and flexibility and while most of the time I want the unprocessed image to edit how I like, there are times I need a quick turn around so being able to bake a LUT into the video is super helpful. It is something I would have liked years ago when shooting V-Log L on my GH5 for the first time and getting to grips with LOG shooting and editing. I like the ergonomics of the S5II. I have slightly short fingers and the grip feels comfortable to me. I do wish it had at least a couple more customisable buttons like the GH6 had as I liked having the extra buttons on the GH6 I could set to whatever I liked for quick access to that feature. I usually like to have two buttons customised, one to turn on/off the monitor LUT and one to change the picture profile quickly.

I LOVE the IBIS on the R6 II... one of the best you can get. And I routinely shoot at ISO 12800 for photos with almost no noise... and even 25600 for video without too much issue! The S5 II as mentioned in the video has colour issues and a LOT of in camera noise reduction making the images look mushy. A bit of noise can be removed easily with PureRaw, but that mush and colour shift in the S5 II cannot be corrected.
@ScreenFiends
@ScreenFiends Жыл бұрын
@77dris The review also said that for general shooting the Lumix colours looked better. The review said the blotchy colours were only at the extended ISO range, a range no professional is realistically using. Absolutely no one is turning their ISO up full to shoot. There's a difference between usable/ functional ISO and the extended range. The Lumix performed best where it mattered.

You can get more inexpensive Lenses for Panasonic and Sigma (but also more expensive ones from Leica). The Battery Management from the Canon is a great plus as are the uncorrected colors for portraits (they are warmer and less green than the Panasonic). But both cameras are well suited for photo and video. Canon some advantages for portrait in studio and daylight. Panasonic has some advantages with high ISO and video. You will need more Batteries for the Panasonic when you have day-long sessions. But you have to value it in combination with the lenses you need. There is no 85 1.2 or 50 1.2 for the Panasonic. There is no 35 1.2 for the Canon.

With the S5 II, Panasonic addressed its key technical weakness - the reliability of continuous autofocus in video. In the US$1500-2500 range we now have unprecedented choices across brands and mounts (MFT, APSC and FF), amazing specifications and functionality for good value hybrid across Sony (A7IV, FX30), Canon (R6II, R7, R8), Lumix (S5II, S5IIX and GH6) and Fujifilm (XT5, XH2S). I expect Nikon will join that list once the Z9’s technology trickles down to the next round of full frame Nikon cameras. Similarly, lens choices are now excellent across the mounts, albeit with a few lens options being unique to certain mounts or brands. Many enthusiasts will probably have more than one mount to cater for size / weight preferences or other preferences. I expect in the future there will be more options in terms of camera size (eg R8 vs R6), form (rangefinder / FX3 style vs protruding EVF) and design (eg Fujifilm and Nikon retro models). What I’m looking forward to now in the next generation of cameras is more in-camera editing options. In this regard I like the S5II custom LUT option. I also hope that AI will play a constructive role in workflow beyond replacing skies with fake looking pink sunsets.

I disagree. The Canon noise is actually worse than earlier cameras released. I don’t see that strong of a loss on the LUMIX. The noise looks more than my BM 6K Pro. and that’s an S35 crop. There’s also an ISO comparison between the A7IV and S5II and the reviewers couldn’t believe how much better the noise was in the LUMIX without the image following apart from color shift and noise as shown on the Sony.

Hi! Is it just me or you start loosing a lot of detail and sharpness as you bump the ISO up on the S5ii? You can see the bottom right close up of the squares just going blurry, whilst the R6 just keeps the sharpness! I have an R6 i and I can shoot at 6400 ISO with pretty good results, better than those you just showed with the R6 ii, so I wonder if you should either test them (r6 i and ii) against each other or if you should repeat those tests. Anyway, what you saw as an advantage for the Panasonic in terms of ISO, I see as a deal breaker, no way I can loose that much detail when shooting higher ISO. Another test that I think you should do, and I’ve seen it here on your test, is an AF in low light test. All best

@@TheSlantedLens My A7C and Z30 focused better in medium indoor lighting (around the house) than the S5II. High ISO's shifted green. It felt twice as large. I just need smaller and lighter, maybe remove video. All this focus on video/hybrid is working aginst what we were happy with 5 years ago. I just want to shoot some 1080p now and then. I often just mount an old smartphone (or Vanon elf point and shoot) to my hotshoe for video clips now and then. I get compliments on them because they're generally more stable than handheld. ;) The first camera I didn't use every custom button or menu items up! They really got the layout and options right. I need a few more MP's, so I'll be open to trying the next one out. I only tried the kit lens, and I'm completely lost when it comes to the L lenses. They seem expensive and heavy, even with the Sigma's. Nikon and Sony have set a high bar for lenses. I think they need to consider more help, descriptions, and labels in the menus. Realtime Lut limits you to 640ISO or higher which was confusing. Focusing boxes seemed distracting and it wasn't clear what it was doing. No ability to switch between faces that I could see. Flash warning gets in the way of shooting. Deleting an image took too many presses and buttons 4-5. Other things I liked: locking body cap, comfortable to hold, even my daughters preferred it in hand, top charging/record indicator, focus point in playback. Cheers.

The higher sharpness on the Canon mostly boils down to superior glass, and to a lesser extent to a better JPEG engine. Canon does have an edge in producing cleaner and sharper JPEGs, but raw images tell another story. Really impressed by S5II raw files, and surprised how good they are compared to R6II. Downloaded raw samples of both S5II and R6II from imaging-resource and played with them in LRC. I can zoom in on a Canon image and it never appears artificially sharpened, and the fine lines of things just look great. For some reason Panasonic stills remind me of cell phone camera stills. I could tell in the ISO test that one or both cameras was applying some serious de-noising, and that's not something I'd ever want in a camera. Especially if it couldn't be turned off.

I just don't understand, although R6 ii has a higher frame rate than S5 II, I still see that S5 II films more smoothly than R6 ii. To me, Panasonic wins!

I thought the S5 ii was going to do raw 😢

The S5 ii can shoot raw externally. This guy is not videographer so he is not specialist in term of video. The r6 ii can shoot raw externally but only in 10 bits…the s5 ii shoot raw in 12 bits S5 ii is way better in term of video…

If you want to do any type of external recording, better to wait for S5IIX

I am pretty sure that there will be a paid upgrade ($200) that will allow the S5 II to shoot ProRes RAW to an external recorder (atomos, I am guessing). I don't think there has been an official announcement whether the S5 II will (or won't) be able to output Black Magic RAW (BRAW), which despite it's name, isn't actually RAW. Fun fact: According to matt Frazer of Panasonic Business Development in the USA, RAW is RAW. So in theory, if you have a RAW capture device that can recod via HDMI, then it should be able to capture the RAW out from the S5 II (when the update is released). Only issue is that the only recorders (that I know of) are Atomos that capture in ProRes RAW. So if a different hardware manufacturer came out with a different RAW recording device (either using ProRes RAW codec or a different RAW codec), then that would work, too.

I don’t think that you could lose with either one. It’s really pointless other than the fact that the Panasonic is much cheaper!
